This thesis discusses different models, methods and theories from the field of visual anthropology as well as from Cultural and Social Anthropology of the arts based on contemporary art photography of the Viennese artist and filmmaker Lisl Ponger. Key issues include the examination of the Oeuvre and the integration of the picture contents in recent theories and discourses relating to art, the medium of photography as well as the picture as anthropological category. Particular attention is paid to the examination of visual regulations governing representation and strategies. The analysis is lying at the interface between arts, science and the historical construction of the cultural ‘Other’ in the picture. The discourse is drawing upon contemporary photographic works. Empirical research methods of the subject and the artistic strategies of Lisl Ponger are applied as well. Connecting Ponger’s implemented visual practice and making use of scientific contributions to the visual object, leads to a discourse of parallels from both fields. Above all, the most important goal is to satisfy the requirements of critical culture and social anthropologists, who put the western “Artworld” and the “Self” in the center of contemporary Cultural and Social Anthropology of arts

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
Jatropha curcas L. is a very drought-resistant plant, and jatropha oil can be ex-tracted from its seeds. Whilst not suitable for human consumption, we found that it is a promising feedstock for producing (bio)-gasoline. The oil was cracked in an inter-nally circulating FCC-reactor using a Grace Davison Ultima® catalyst. The total con-version was around 65%, with ca. 40% gasoline and ca. 25% crack gas (exact num-bers varied with reactor temperature). The gasoline has a RON \u3e 95 and oxy-gen \u3c 0.3% m. The crack-gas consisted of ca. 35% propylene, ca. 13% 1-butene and ca. 6% ethylene

Trends in vehicle motion control for automated driving on public roads

    Get PDF
In this paper, we describe how vehicle systems and the vehicle motion control are affected by automated driving on public roads. We describe the redundancy needed for a road vehicle to meet certain safety goals. The concept of system safety as well as system solutions to fault tolerant actuation of steering and braking and the associated fault tolerant power supply is described. Notably restriction of the operational domain in case of reduced capability of the driving automation system is discussed. Further we consider path tracking, state estimation of vehicle motion control required for automated driving as well as an example of a minimum risk manoeuver and redundant steering by means of differential braking. The steering by differential braking could offer heterogeneous or dissimilar redundancy that complements the redundancy of described fault tolerant steering systems for driving automation equipped vehicles. Finally, the important topic of verification of driving automation systems is addressed

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Genetic fusion of the major birch pollen allergen (Bet v1) to bacterial surface-(S)-layer proteins resulted in recombinant proteins exhibiting reduced allergenicity as well as immunomodulatory capacity. Thus, S-layer/allergen fusion proteins were considered as suitable carriers for new immunotherapeutical vaccines for treatment of Type I hypersensitivity. Up to now, endotoxin contamination of the fusion protein which occurred after isolation from the gram-negative expression host <it>E. coli </it>had to be removed by an expensive and time consuming procedure. In the present study, in order to achieve expression of pyrogen-free, recombinant S-layer/allergen fusion protein and to study the secretion of a protein capable to self-assemble, the S-layer/allergen fusion protein rSbpA/Bet v1 was produced in the gram-positive organism <it>Bacillus subtilis </it>1012.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The chimaeric gene encoding the S-layer protein SbpA of <it>Lysinibacillus sphaericus </it>CCM 2177 as well as Bet v1 was cloned and expressed in <it>B. subtilis </it>1012. For that purpose, the <it>E. coli-B. subtilis </it>shuttle vectors pHT01 for expression in the <it>B. subtilis </it>cytoplasm and pHT43 for secretion of the recombinant fusion protein into the culture medium were used. As shown by western blot analysis, immediately after induction of expression, <it>B. subtilis </it>1012 was able to secret rSbpA/Bet v1 mediated by the signal peptide amyQ of <it>Bacillus amyloliquefaciens</it>. Electron microscopical investigation of the culture medium revealed that the secreted fusion protein was able to form self-assembly products in suspension but did not recrystallize on the surface of the <it>B. subtilis </it>cells. The specific binding mechanism between the N-terminus of the S-layer protein and a secondary cell wall polymer (SCWP), located in the peptidoglycan-containing sacculi of <it>Ly. sphaericus </it>CCM 2177, could be used for isolation and purification of the secreted fusion protein from the culture medium. Immune reactivity of rSbpA/Bet v1 could be demonstrated in immunoblotting experiments with Bet v1 specific IgE containing serum samples from patients suffering birch pollen allergy.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The impact of this study can be seen in the usage of a gram-positive organism for the production of pyrogen-free self-assembling recombinant S-layer/allergen fusion protein with great relevance for the development of vaccines for immunotherapy of atopic allergy.</p

Laser assisted bending for efficient light-weight-production

Omogućava savijanje legura Al-, Mg-, Ti- i nekih legura čelika zagrijavanjem linije savijanja neposredno prije i tijekom postupka savijanja. Laser-assisted bending is an efficient production method of light weight and/or high strength parts. It enables bending of Al-, Mg-, Ti-, and certain steel alloys by heating the bending line shortly before and during the bending process. Two solutions integrated in the lower tool of a bending machine are available: first with diode lasers, second with optics supplied by an external fiber coupled solid state laser. Experiments show that laser assisted bending of Al-parts needs the use of an absorption layer like graphite. In case of high strength steels an accurate temperature control is necessary and some steel-alloys lose strength due to this process. Mg- and Ti-alloys can be bent with this new method usually without complications. Further this new production method is an energy saving method for bending of brittle metals and the ease of operation, which can be compared with simple cold-bending, and it allows going new ways in construction and production of light weight parts
