Voltage-current and voltage-flux characteristics of asymmetric high TC DC SQUIDs
We report measurements of transfer functions and flux shifts of 20 on-chip
high T DC SQUIDs half of which were made purposely geometrically
asymmetric. All of these SQUIDs were fabricated using standard high T thin
film technology and they were single layer ones, having 140 nm thickness of
YBaCuO film deposited by laser ablation onto MgO bicrystal
substrates with 24 misorientation angle. For every SQUID the parameters of
its intrinsic asymmetry, i. e., the density of critical current and resistivity
of every junction, were measured directly and independently. We showed that the
main reason for the on-chip spreading of SQUIDs' voltage-current and
voltage-flux characteristics was the intrinsic asymmetry. We found that for
SQUIDs with a relative large inductance ( pH) both the voltage
modulation and the transfer function were not very sensitive to the junctions
asymmetry, whereas SQUIDs with smaller inductance ( pH) were
more sensitive. The results obtained in the paper are important for the
implementation in the sensitive instruments based on high T SQUID arrays

Acute Hepatitis E Virus infection with coincident reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus infection in an immunosuppressed patient with rheumatoid arthritis: a case report.
BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the most recently discovered of the hepatotropic viruses, and is considered an emerging pathogen in developed countries with the possibility of fulminant hepatitis in immunocompromised patients. Especially in the latter elevated transaminases should be taken as a clue to consider HEV infection, as it can be treated by discontinuation of immunosuppression and/or ribavirin therapy. To our best knowledge, this is a unique case of autochthonous HEV infection with coincident reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in an immunosuppressed patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old Swiss woman with RA developed hepatitis initially diagnosed as methotrexate-induced liver injury, but later diagnosed as autochthonous HEV infection accompanied by reactivation of her latent EBV infection. She showed confounding serological results pointing to three hepatotropic viruses (HEV, Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and EBV) that could be resolved by detection of HEV and EBV viraemia. The patient recovered by temporary discontinuation of immunosuppressive therapy.
CONCLUSIONS: In immunosuppressed patients with RA and signs of liver injury, HEV infection should be considered, as infection can be treated by discontinuation of immunosuppression. Although anti-HEV-IgM antibody assays can be used as first line virological tools, nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) for detection of HEV RNA are recommended--as in our case--if confounding serological results from other hepatotropic viruses are obtained. After discontinuation of immunosuppressive therapy, our patient recovered from both HEV infection and reactivation of latent EBV infection without sequelae
The direct evaluation of attosecond chirp from a streaking measurement
We derive an analytical expression, from classical electron trajectories in a
laser field, that relates the breadth of a streaked photoelectron spectrum to
the group-delay dispersion of an isolated attosecond pulse. Based on this
analytical expression, we introduce a simple, efficient and robust procedure to
instantly extract the attosecond pulse's chirp from the streaking measurement.Comment: 4 figure
Anomalous Periodicity of the Current-Phase Relationship of Grain-Boundary Josephson Junctions in High-Tc Superconductors
The current-phase relation (CPR) for asymmetric 45 degree Josephson junctions
between two d-wave superconductors has been predicted to exhibit an anomalous
periodicity. We have used the single-junction interferometer to investigate the
CPR for this kind of junctions in YBCO thin films. Half-fluxon periodicity has
been experimentally found, providing a novel source of evidence for the d-wave

Channel capacity describes the size of the nearly ideal channels, which can
be obtained from many uses of a given channel, using an optimal error
correcting code. In this paper we collect and compare minor and major
variations in the mathematically precise statements of this idea which have
been put forward in the literature. We show that all the variations considered
lead to equivalent capacity definitions. In particular, it makes no difference
whether one requires mean or maximal errors to go to zero, and it makes no
difference whether errors are required to vanish for any sequence of block

De novo DNA methylation controls neuronal maturation during adult hippocampal neurogenesis
Adult neurogenesis enables the life-long addition of functional neurons to the hippocampus and is regulated by both cell-intrinsic molecular programs and behavioral activity. De novo DNA methylation is crucial for embryonic brain development, but its role during adult hippocampal neurogenesis has remained unknown. Here, we show that de novo DNA methylation is critical for maturation and functional integration of adult-born neurons in the mouse hippocampus. Bisulfite sequencing revealed that de novo DNA methyltransferases target neuronal enhancers and gene bodies during adult hippocampal neural stem cell differentiation, to establish neuronal methylomes and facilitate transcriptional up-regulation of neuronal genes. Inducible deletion of both de novo DNA methyltransferases Dnmt3a and Dnmt3b in adult neural stem cells did not affect proliferation or fate specification, but specifically impaired dendritic outgrowth and synaptogenesis of newborn neurons, thereby hampering their functional maturation. Consequently, abolishing de novo DNA methylation modulated activation patterns in the hippocampal circuitry and caused specific deficits in hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. Our results demonstrate that proper establishment of neuronal methylomes during adult neurogenesis is fundamental for hippocampal function

Archaeometric methods, used to determine raw materials and production techniques, permit the identification of places of production. The work of the research group presented here pursues two objectives: (i) to investigate the usefulness of portable X-ray fluorescence equipment for the analysis of ceramics and (ii) to identify, interpret and study distribution areas of ceramic products in comparative prospective.
