    The Effects of JIT on the Development of Productivity Norms

    Low inventory, or just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing systems, enjoy increasing application worldwide, yet the behavioral effects of such systems remain largely unexplored. Operations Research (OR) models of low inventory systems typically make a simplifying assumption that individual worker processing times are independent random variables. This leads to predictions that low-inventory systems will exhibit production interruptions. Yet empirical results suggest that low-inventory systems do not exhibit the predicted productivity losses. This paper develops a model integrating feedback, goal-setting, group cohesiveness, task norms, and peer pressure to predict how individual behavior may adjust to alleviate production interruptions in low-inventory systems. In doing so we integrate previous research on the development of task norms. Findings suggest that low-inventory systems induce individual and group responses that cause behavioral changes that mitigate production interruptions

    Accurate and robust image superresolution by neural processing of local image representations

    Image superresolution involves the processing of an image sequence to generate a still image with higher resolution. Classical approaches, such as bayesian MAP methods, require iterative minimization procedures, with high computational costs. Recently, the authors proposed a method to tackle this problem, based on the use of a hybrid MLP-PNN architecture. In this paper, we present a novel superresolution method, based on an evolution of this concept, to incorporate the use of local image models. A neural processing stage receives as input the value of model coefficients on local windows. The data dimension-ality is firstly reduced by application of PCA. An MLP, trained on synthetic se-quences with various amounts of noise, estimates the high-resolution image data. The effect of varying the dimension of the network input space is exam-ined, showing a complex, structured behavior. Quantitative results are presented showing the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method

    Uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy in CaRuO3{\rm CaRuO_3}

    CaRuO3{\rm CaRuO_3} is a paramagnetic metal and since its low temperature resistivity is described by ρ=ρ0+ATÎł\rho=\rho_0+AT^\gamma with ÎłâˆŒ1.5\gamma \sim 1.5, it is also considered a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) metal. We have performed extensive magnetoresistance and Hall effect measurements of untwinned epitaxial films of CaRuO3{\rm CaRuO_3}. These measurements reveal that CaRuO3{\rm CaRuO_3} exhibits uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. In addition, the low-temperature NFL behavior is most effectively suppressed when a magnetic field is applied along the easy axis, suggesting that critical spin fluctuations, possibly due to proximity of a quantum critical phase transition, are related to the NFL behavior.Comment: 7 figure

    Preliminary Geomorphological Studies of the Lime Creek Area & Preliminary Report on the Lime Creek Sites: New Evidence of Early Man in Southwestern Nebraska

    PALEONTOLOGICAL and archaeological discoveries were made near Cambridge, Nebraska, by the University of Nebraska State Museum field party in the spring of 1947 (Schultz and Frankforter, 1948, pp. 279-280) . Fossils and artifacts were found in situ at the base of a fifty-foot terrace on Lime Creek (University of Nebraska State Museum Localities Ft-41 and Ft-42) and on Medicine Creek just below the mouth of Lime Creek (Ft-50). Lime Creek is located (Fig. 1) in southwestern Nebraska in the southeastern part of Frontier County. It is a tributary of Medicine Creek which in turn is a tributary to the Republican River. The paleontological material from this site reveals new information on the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary line problem-a fundamental problem in the over-all Pleistocene history of the region. A series of five topographic benches\u27 or terraces is developed (see Figs. 4 and 5) along the Republican River and its tributaries. Field studies indicate that these represent cycles of alluviation interrupted by erosional periods. A similarly developed series of terrace-fills in a contiguous region has been provisionally correlated with the sub-stages of the Wisconsin stage of Pleistocene continental glaciation (Lueninghoener, 1946). I N THE natural course of paleontological and geological explorations in Pleistocene deposits the fossil hunter often discovers evidence of man\u27s early occupation of North America. Artifacts and other cultural evidence are frequently found in direct association with the fossilized bones of various species of animals. Some of these remains represent extinct species while others can be referred to those found in North America today. Much is yet to be learned concerning the stratigraphic distribution of vertebrate life of the Pleistocene and the time of extinction of certain forms, but new evidence (see Schultz, Lueninghoener, and Frankforter, Part 1, Fig. 6 of this report) is constantly being accumulated which aids in clarifying the picture. In 1932 the University of Nebraska State Museum commenced a research program (Lugn, 1934, pp. 319-356; Schultz, 1934, pp. 357-393) in the field and laboratory relating to the stratigraphic distribution of the Pleistocene mammals and the study of extinction in the Great Plains. Since that time the major portion of the Museum\u27s field work has been directed to problems relating to the Pleistocene. The significance of terraces to the problems has been pointed out in Part 1 of this report (also in Schultz and Stout, 1945; 1948)

    It is well known that rational bubbles can be sustained in balanced growth path of a deterministic economy when the return to capital r is equal to the growth rate g. When there is a lack of stores of value, bubbles can implement an efficient allocation. This paper considers a world where r fluctuates over time due to shocks to the marginal productivity of capital. Then, bubbles further efficiency, though they cannot implement first best. While bubbles can only be sustained when r = g in a deterministic economy, r > g "on average" in a stochastic economy. Fiscal policy improves welfare by adding an extra asset. Where only the elderly contribute to shifting resources between investment and consumption in a bubbly economy, fiscal policy allows part of that burden to be shifted to the young. Contrary to common wisdom, trade in bubbly assets implements intergenerational transfers, while fiscal policy implements intragenerational transfers. Hence, while bubbles and fiscal policy are perfect substitutes in the deterministic economy, fiscal policy dominates bubbles in a stochastic economy. For plausible parameter values, a higher degree of dynamic inefficiency should lead to a higher sovereign debt
