    Symbionts as Filters of Plant Colonization of Islands: Tests of Expected Patterns and Environmental Consequences in the Galapagos

    This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.The establishments of new organisms that arrive naturally or with anthropogenic assistance depend primarily on local conditions, including biotic interactions. We hypothesized that plants that rely on fungal symbionts are less likely to successfully colonize remote environments such as oceanic islands, and this can shape subsequent island ecology. We analyzed the mycorrhizal status of Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos flora compared with the mainland Ecuador flora of origin. We experimentally determined plant responsiveness and plant–soil feedback of the island flora and assessed mycorrhizal density and soil aggregate stability of island sites. We found that a greater proportion of the native island flora species belongs to families that typically do not associate with mycorrhizal fungi than expected based upon the mainland flora of origin and the naturalized flora of the island. Native plants benefited significantly less from soil fungi and had weaker negative soil feedbacks than introduced species. This is consistent with the observation that field sites dominated by native plant species had lower arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal density and lower soil aggregate stability than invaded field sites at the island.     Analysis of the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof density functional parameter space

    The Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) density functionals are popular for their ability to improve the accuracy of standard semilocal functionals such as Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE), particularly for semiconductor band gaps. They also have a reduced computational cost compared to hybrid functionals, which results from the restriction of Fock exchange calculations to small inter-electron separations. These functionals are defined by an overall fraction of Fock exchange and a length scale for exchange screening. We systematically examine this two-parameter space to assess the performance of hybrid screened exchange (sX) functionals and to determine a balance between improving accuracy and reducing the screening length, which can further reduce computational costs. Three parameter choices emerge as useful: "sX-PBE" is an approximation to the sX-LDA screened exchange density functionals based on the local density approximation (LDA); "HSE12" minimizes the overall error over all tests performed; and "HSE12s" is a range-minimized functional that matches the overall accuracy of the existing HSE06 parameterization but reduces the Fock exchange length scale by half. Analysis of the error trends over parameter space produces useful guidance for future improvement of density functionals.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted to the Journal of Chemical Physic

    Acaulospora colossica sp. nov. from an old field in North Carolina and morphological comparisons with similar species, A. laevis and A. koskei

    A new arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal species, Acaulospora colossica, (Glomales, Acaulosporaceae) is described, and its distribution and seasonality discussed. Spores of A. colossica develop from saccules that empty their contents in the developing spores. Spore wall structure consists of 3 layers, all originating from the subtending hyphae. The two inner layers are laminated. The outermost spore wall layer is typically sloughed off before the spores mature. Two inner walls arise sequentially. Both inner walls are comprised of two layers. The outer layer of the innermost wall is beaded. Acaulospora colossica is described from a population in Durham, North Carolina. Its name refers to the relatively large size of the spores. Finally, the morphology of the new species A. colossica is compared and contrasted to two closely related species A. laevis and A. koskei

    Dataset Search: A lightweight, community-built tool to support research data discovery

    Objective: Promoting discovery of research data helps archived data realize its potential to advance knowledge. Montana State University (MSU) Dataset Search aims to support discovery and reporting for research datasets created by researchers at institutions. Methods and Results: The Dataset Search application consists of five core features: a streamlined browse and search interface, a data model based on dataset discovery, a harvesting process for finding and vetting datasets stored in external repositories, an administrative interface for managing the creation, ingest, and maintenance of dataset records, and a dataset visualization interface to demonstrate how data is produced and used by MSU researchers. Conclusion: The Dataset Search application is designed to be easily customized and implemented by other institutions. Indexes like Dataset Search can improve search and discovery for content archived in data repositories, therefore amplifying the impact and benefits of archived data

    The Effects of Exposure to Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Seed on Faecal and Urine Concentrations of Ergovaline and Lysergic Acid in Mature Gelding Horses

    Despite the good nutritive value of endophyte-infected tall fescue, consumption by livestock results in a decrease in both reproductive and growth performance due to ergot alkaloids produced by an endophytic fungus (Cross et al., 1995). Little research has investigated the metabolic fate of ergot alkaloids and/or their metabolites in grazing horses. Thus, the objectives of this experiment were: a) to determine concentrations of ergovaline (EV) and lysergic acid (LA) in the faeces and urine of geldings exposed to tall fescue seed over a time course experiment and b) to measure the effects of alkaloid-containing tall fescue on nutrient digestibility and serum clinical enzyme profiles
