The Theoretical Embedding Of Born Globals: Challenging Existing Internationalization Theories
This article examines the embedding of the phenomenon of Born Globals into three existing theories of the firm. The model of Born Globals deals with young companies that begin shortly after their foundation to internationalize. The Uppsala Internationalization Model helps to delimit the concept of Born Globals from existing internationalization models and to highlight their special features. The resource-based view takes up the integration of knowledge as the key resource of Born Globals and explains the underlying mechanism with which a company achieves a sustainable competitive advantage from a bundle of resources. The knowledge-based view is concerned with the generation of knowledge and explains the learning processes that are performed by the entrepreneur. A recurring theme could be identified and contains the following elements which interconnect the three theories of the firm with the concept of Born Globals - knowledge as a key resource, learning, and integration of knowledge into organizations
Postoperative atrial fibrillation: The role of the inflammatory response
OBJECTIVE: Abnormal atrial conduction has been shown to be a substrate for postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). This study aimed to determine the relationship between the location of the atrial reentry responsible for POAF, and degree of atrial inflammation.
METHODS: Normal mongrel dogs (n = 18) were divided into 3 groups: anesthesia alone (anesthesia), lateral right atriotomy (atriotomy), and lateral right atriotomy with anti-inflammatory therapy (steroid). Conduction properties of the right and left atria (RA and LA) were examined 3 days postoperatively by mapping. Activation was observed during burst pacing-induced AF. The RA and LA myeloperoxidase activity was measured to quantitate the degree of inflammation.
RESULTS: Sustained AF (\u3e2 minutes) was induced in 5 of 6 animals in the atriotomy group, but in none in the anesthesia or steroid groups. All sustained AF originated from around the RA incision. Three of these animals had an incisional reentrant tachycardia around the right atriotomy and 2 had a focal activation arising from the RA during AF. The LA activations in these animals were passive from the RA activation. The RA activation of the atriotomy group was more inhomogeneous than that of the anesthesia group (inhomogeneity index: 2.0 ± 0.2 vs 1.0 ± 0.1, P \u3c .01). Steroid therapy significantly normalized the RA activation after the atriotomy (1.2 ± 0.1, P \u3c .01). The inhomogeneity of the atrial conduction correlated with the myeloperoxidase activity (r = 0.774, P \u3c .001).
CONCLUSIONS: Reentrant circuits responsible for POAF are dependent on the degree of inflammation and rotate around the atriotomy. Anti-inflammatory therapy decreased the risk of postoperative AF
The persistent problem of new-onset postoperative atrial fibrillation: A single-institution experience over two decades
ObjectivePostoperative atrial fibrillation is the most common complication after cardiac surgery. A variety of postoperative atrial fibrillation risk factors have been reported, but study results have been inconsistent or contradictory, particularly in patients with preexisting atrial fibrillation. The incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation was evaluated in a group of 10,390 patients undergoing cardiac surgery among a comprehensive range of risk factors to identify reliable predictors of postoperative atrial fibrillation.MethodsThis 20-year retrospective study examined the relationship between postoperative atrial fibrillation and demographic factors, preoperative health conditions and medications, operative procedures, and postoperative complications. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate potential predictors of postoperative atrial fibrillation.ResultsIncreasing age, mitral valve surgery (odds ratio = 1.91), left ventricular aneurysm repair (odds ratio = 1.57), aortic valve surgery (odds ratio = 1.52), race (Caucasian) (odds ratio = 1.51), use of cardioplegia (odds ratio = 1.36), use of an intraaortic balloon pump (odds ratio = 1.28), previous congestive heart failure (odds ratio = 1.28), and hypertension (odds ratio = 1.15) were significantly associated with postoperative atrial fibrillation. The non-linear relationship between age and postoperative atrial fibrillation revealed the acceleration of postoperative atrial fibrillation risk in patients aged 55 years or more. In patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting, increasing age and previous congestive heart failure were the only factors associated with a higher risk of postoperative atrial fibrillation. There was no trend in incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation over time. No protective factors against postoperative atrial fibrillation were detected, including commonly prescribed categories of medications.ConclusionsThe persistence of the problem of postoperative atrial fibrillation and the modest predictability using common risk factors suggest that limited progress has been made in understanding its cause and treatment
Ballistic transport in disordered graphene
An analytic theory of electron transport in disordered graphene in a
ballistic geometry is developed. We consider a sample of a large width W and
analyze the evolution of the conductance, the shot noise, and the full
statistics of the charge transfer with increasing length L, both at the Dirac
point and at a finite gate voltage. The transfer matrix approach combined with
the disorder perturbation theory and the renormalization group is used. We also
discuss the crossover to the diffusive regime and construct a ``phase diagram''

Transverse component of the magnetic field in the solar photosphere observed by Sunrise
We present the first observations of the transverse component of photospheric
magnetic field acquired by the imaging magnetograph Sunrise/IMaX. Using an
automated detection method, we obtain statistical properties of 4536 features
with significant linear polarization signal. Their rate of occurrence is 1-2
orders of magnitude larger than values reported by previous studies. We show
that these features have no characteristic size or lifetime. They appear
preferentially at granule boundaries with most of them being caught in downflow
lanes at some point in their evolution. Only a small percentage are entirely
and constantly embedded in upflows (16%) or downflows (8%).Comment: Accepted for the Sunrise Special Issue of ApJ
Comparison of the stand-alone Cox-Maze IV procedure to the concomitant Cox-Maze IV and mitral valve procedure for atrial fibrillation
BACKGROUND: The majority of patients undergoing surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) worldwide receive a concomitant mitral valve (MV) procedure. This study compared outcomes of the Cox-Maze IV (CMIV) in patients with lone AF to those with AF and MV disease. METHODS: A retrospective review of 335 patients receiving either a stand-alone CMIV for AF (n=151) or a CMIV with a MV procedure (n=184) was performed from January 2002 through December of 2012. Data were obtained at 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 months and patients were evaluated for recurrence of AF. Twenty-four preoperative and perioperative variables were evaluated to identify predictors of AF recurrence at one year. RESULTS: The two groups differed in that stand-alone CMIV patients were younger, had AF of longer duration and had more failed catheter ablations, while patients with AF and MV disease had larger left atria and worse New York Heart Association class (P≤0.001). Operative mortality was higher in the concomitant MV group (1% vs. 5%, P=0.015). Freedom from AF and antiarrhythmic drugs at 12 and 24 months were similar between the two groups (73% and 76% at 12 months; 77% vs. 78% at 24 months). Predictors of recurrence included failure to use a box-lesion to isolate the pulmonary veins and posterior left atria, early recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmias (ATAs) and the presence of a preoperative pacemaker (P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy of the CMIV procedure was similar in patients with and without co-existent MV pathology. Patients receiving a concomitant CMIV and MV procedure represented an older and sicker patient population and had higher mortality rates than those receiving a stand-alone CMIV procedure
Diazoxide maintains human myocyte volume homeostasis during stress
BACKGROUND: Exposure to hypothermic hyperkalemic cardioplegia, hyposmotic stress, or metabolic inhibition results in significant animal myocyte swelling (6% to10%) and subsequent reduced contractility (10% to 20%). Both are eliminated by the adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel opener diazoxide (DZX). The relationship between swelling and reduced contractility suggests that the structural change may represent one mechanism of postoperative myocardial stunning. This study evaluated human myocyte volume during stress to investigate if similar phenomena exist in human myocytes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Human atrial myocytes isolated from tissue obtained during cardiac surgery were perfused with Tyrode's physiological solution (20 minutes, 37°C), test solution (20 minutes), and Tyrode's (37°C, 20 minutes). Test solutions (n=6 to 12 myocytes each) included Tyrode's (37°C or 9°C), Tyrode's+DZX (9°C), hyperkalemic cardioplegia (9°C)±DZX, cardioplegia+DZX+HMR 1098 (sarcolemmal adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel inhibitor, 9°C), cardioplegia+DZX+5-hydroxydeconoate (mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel inhibitor, 9°C), mild hyposmotic solution±DZX, metabolic inhibition±DZX, and metabolic inhibition+DZX+5-hydroxydeconoate. Myocyte volume was recorded every 5 minutes. Exposure to hypothermic hyperkalemic cardioplegia, hyposmotic stress, or metabolic inhibition resulted in significant human myocyte swelling (8%, 7%, and 6%, respectively; all P<0.05 vs control). In all groups, the swelling was eliminated or lessened by DZX. The addition of channel inhibitors did not significantly alter results. CONCLUSIONS: DZX maintains human myocyte volume homeostasis during stress via an unknown mechanism. Adenosine triphosphate-sensitive potassium channel Kir subunits implicated in cardioprotection by diazoxide
BACKGROUND: ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) channel openers provide cardioprotection in multiple models. Ion flux at an unidentified mitochondrial K(ATP) channel has been proposed as the mechanism. The renal outer medullary kidney potassium channel subunit, potassium inward rectifying (Kir)1.1, has been implicated as a mitochondrial channel pore-forming subunit. We hypothesized that subunit Kir1.1 is involved in cardioprotection (maintenance of volume homeostasis and contractility) of the K(ATP) channel opener diazoxide (DZX) during stress (exposure to hyperkalemic cardioplegia [CPG]) at the myocyte and mitochondrial levels. METHODS AND RESULTS: Kir subunit inhibitor Tertiapin Q (TPN-Q) was utilized to evaluate response to stress. Mouse ventricular mitochondrial volume was measured in the following groups: isolation buffer; 200 μmol/L of ATP; 100 μmol/L of DZX+200 μmol/L of ATP; or 100 μmol/L of DZX+200 μmol/L of ATP+TPN-Q (500 or 100 nmol/L). Myocytes were exposed to Tyrode’s solution (5 minutes), test solution (Tyrode’s, cardioplegia [CPG], CPG+DZX, CPG+DZX+TPN-Q, Tyrode’s+TPN-Q, or CPG+TPN-Q), N=12 for all (10 minutes); followed by Tyrode’s (5 minutes). Volumes were compared. TPN-Q, with or without DZX, did not alter mitochondrial or myocyte volume. Stress (CPG) resulted in myocyte swelling and reduced contractility that was prevented by DZX. TPN-Q prevented the cardioprotection afforded by DZX (volume homeostasis and maintenance of contractility). CONCLUSIONS: TPN-Q inhibited myocyte cardioprotection provided by DZX during stress; however, it did not alter mitochondrial volume. Because TPN-Q inhibits Kir1.1, Kir3.1, and Kir3.4, these data support that any of these Kir subunits could be involved in the cardioprotection afforded by diazoxide. However, these data suggest that mitochondrial swelling by diazoxide does not involve Kir1.1, 3.1, or 3.4
Induced ectopic expression of HigB toxin in Mycobacterium tuberculosis results in growth inhibition, reduced abundance of a subset of mRNAs and cleavage of tmRNA.
In Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the genes Rv1954A-Rv1957 form an operon that includes Rv1955 and Rv1956 which encode the HigB toxin and the HigA antitoxin respectively. We are interested in the role and regulation of this operon, since toxin-antitoxin systems have been suggested to play a part in the formation of persister cells in mycobacteria. To investigate the function of the higBA locus, effects of toxin expression on mycobacterial growth and transcript levels were assessed in M. tuberculosis H37Rv wild type and in an operon deletion background. We show that expression of HigB toxin in the absence of HigA antitoxin arrests growth and causes cell death in M. tuberculosis. We demonstrate HigB expression to reduce the abundance of IdeR and Zur regulated mRNAs and to cleave tmRNA in M. tuberculosis, Escherichia coli and Mycobacterium smegmatis. This study provides the first identification of possible target transcripts of HigB in M. tuberculosis
The rapid rotation and complex magnetic field geometry of Vega
The recent discovery of a weak surface magnetic field on the normal
intermediate-mass star Vega raises the question of the origin of this magnetism
in a class of stars that was not known to host magnetic fields. We aim to
confirm the field detection and provide additional observational constraints
about the field characteristics, by modelling the magnetic geometry of the star
and by investigating the seasonal variability of the reconstructed field. We
analyse a total of 799 circularly-polarized spectra collected with the NARVAL
and ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeters during 2008 and 2009. We employ a
cross-correlation procedure to compute, from each spectrum, a mean polarized
line profile with a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20,000. The technique of
Zeeman-Doppler Imaging is then used to determine the rotation period of the
star and reconstruct the large-scale magnetic geometry of Vega at two different
epochs. We confirm the detection of circularly polarized signatures in the mean
line profiles. The amplitude of the signatures is larger when spectral lines of
higher magnetic sensitivity are selected for the analysis, as expected for a
signal of magnetic origin. The short-term evolution of polarized signatures is
consistent with a rotational period of 0.732 \pm 0.008 d. The reconstructed
magnetic topology unveils a magnetic region of radial field orientation,
closely concentrated around the rotation pole. This polar feature is
accompanied by a small number of magnetic patches at lower latitudes. No
significant variability in the field structure is observed over a time span of
one year. The repeated observation of a weak photospheric magnetic field on
Vega suggests that a previously unknown type of magnetic stars exists in the
intermediate-mass domain. Vega may well be the first confirmed member of a much
