Modeling and Analyzing Adaptive User-Centric Systems in Real-Time Maude
Pervasive user-centric applications are systems which are meant to sense the
presence, mood, and intentions of users in order to optimize user comfort and
performance. Building such applications requires not only state-of-the art
techniques from artificial intelligence but also sound software engineering
methods for facilitating modular design, runtime adaptation and verification of
critical system requirements.
In this paper we focus on high-level design and analysis, and use the
algebraic rewriting language Real-Time Maude for specifying applications in a
real-time setting. We propose a generic component-based approach for modeling
pervasive user-centric systems and we show how to analyze and prove crucial
properties of the system architecture through model checking and simulation.
For proving time-dependent properties we use Metric Temporal Logic (MTL) and
present analysis algorithms for model checking two subclasses of MTL formulas:
time-bounded response and time-bounded safety MTL formulas. The underlying idea
is to extend the Real-Time Maude model with suitable clocks, to transform the
MTL formulas into LTL formulas over the extended specification, and then to use
the LTL model checker of Maude. It is shown that these analyses are sound and
complete for maximal time sampling. The approach is illustrated by a simple
adaptive advertising scenario in which an adaptive advertisement display can
react to actions of the users in front of the display.Comment: In Proceedings RTRTS 2010, arXiv:1009.398
Achieving Competence-Based Curriculum In Engineering Education In Spain
5 tables, 5 figures, 26 pagesThe fact of placing competences and outcomes learning at the heart of the academic activity means overhauling the curricular architecture of higher education in
Europe. Some universities have undergone important transformations moving toward a
competence-based learning environment, while others maintain traditional curriculum
packaged formats. In the realm of the European Higher Education Area, this paper
examines the use of competence-based initiatives in curricular development for
engineering degrees with special focus to the Spanish case. Although the concept of
competence and competence-based learning have a long history in education and training
research, these terms are still very diffuse and demand a clear conceptualization. In the
first part of this paper, we provide a conceptual overview and a critical reflection of competences as implemented in a wide range of settings, including its origins, key concepts and definitions. Next, we discuss the purposes, principles, pitfalls, and processes that enable to define a map of competences within Engineering Education. Finally, we
present a pilot project involving curriculum development and faculty enhancement within
a competence-based learning initiative in Electronic Engineering
Populist Attitudes and Selective Exposure to Online News: A Cross-Country Analysis Combining Web Tracking and Surveys
Research has shown that citizens with populist attitudes evaluate the news media more negatively, and there is also suggestive evidence that they rely less on established news sources like the legacy press. However, due to data limitations, there is still no solid evidence whether populist citizens have skewed news diets in the contemporary high-choice digital media environment. In this paper, we rely on the selective exposure framework and investigate the relationship between populist attitudes and the consumption of various types of online news. To test our theoretical assumptions, we link 150 million Web site visits by 7,729 Internet users in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States to their responses in an online survey. This design allows us to measure media exposure more precisely than previous studies while linking these data to demographic attributes and political attitudes of participants. The results show that populist attitudes leave pronounced marks in peopleâs news diets, but the evidence is heterogeneous and highly contingent on the supply side of a countryâs media system. Most importantly, citizens with populist attitudes visit less Web sites from the legacy press, while consuming more hyperpartisan news. Despite these tendencies, the Web tracking data show that populist citizens still primarily get their news from established sources. We discuss the implications of these results for the current state of public spheres in democracies
Reliable Multicast in Heterogeneous Mobile Ad-hoc Networks
In disaster scenarios, communication infrastructure could be damaged orcompletely failed. Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) can be used to substitutefailed communication devices and thus to enable communication. As group communicationis an important part in disaster scenarios, multicast will be used to addressseveral nodes. In this paper, we propose our new reliable multicast protocol RMDA(Reliable Multicast over Delay Tolerant Mobile Ad hoc Networks). We introducean efficient group management approach and a new method for reliable multicastdelivery over Delay Tolerant Networks. We show, that our protocol is adaptive todifferent kinds of MANETs, e.g. with or without clusterheads, respectively. Forthose without, we use our name resolution over adaptive routing approach
Correlation of the Subjective Hip Value with Validated Patient-Reported Outcome Measurements for the Hip
Background: The subjective hip value (SHV) was developed as a patient-reported outcome measurement (PROM) that is easily and quickly performed and interpreted. The SHV is defined as a patient's subjective hip measurement tool expressed as a percentage of an entirely normal hip joint, which would score 100%. The hypothesis is that results of the subjective hip value correlate with the results of the modified Harris hip score and the International Hip Outcome Tool in patients with hip-related diseases.
Methods: 302 patients completed the modified Harris hip score (mHHS), the International Hip Outcome Tool (iHot-33) as well as the SHV. The SHV consist of only one question: "What is the overall percent value of your hip if a completely normal hip represents 100%?". The patients were divided into five different groups depending on the diagnosis. Pearson correlation was used to evaluate the correlation between the different PROMs and linear regression analysis was used to calculate R2.
Results: 302 complete datasets were available for evaluation. There was a high correlation between the SHV and the iHOT-33 (r = 0.847; r2 = 0.692, p < 0.001) and the mHHS (r = 0.832; r2 = 0.717, p < 0.001). The SHV showed a medium (r = 0.653) to high (r = 0.758) correlation with the mHHS and the iHOT-33 in all diagnosis groups.
Conclusion: The SHV offers a useful adjunct to established hip outcome measurements, as it is easily and quickly performed and interpreted. The SHV reflects the view of the patient and is independent of the diagnosis. Further research with prospective studies is needed to test the psychometric properties of the score
Growth in infants, children and adolescents with unilateral and bilateral cerebral palsy
To compare growth patterns during infancy, childhood and adolescence in children with unilateral and bilateral cerebral palsy (CP) phenotype and to assess the association with gross motor impairment, dysphagia and gestational age. We retrospectively studied 389 children with CP from a single center population in Munich, Germany. 1536 measurements of height and weight were tabulated and z-scored from 6 to 180Â months of age. Generalized linear mixed model were used to examine the association between growth, GMFCS, dysphagia and gestational age by CP phenotype. Children with unilateral CP tend to grow similarly to their typically developed peers. In the main effect model, bilateral CP phenotype was significantly associated with decreased mean z-scores for height (ÎČ [95% CI] â 0.953 [â 1.145, â 0.761], p < 0.001), weight (â 0.999 [â 1.176, â 0.807], p < 0.001) and BMI (ÎČ [95% CI] â 0.437 [â 0.799, â 0.075]), compared with unilateral CP phenotype. This association remained significant in the interaction models. The height-for-age z-scores, weight-for-age decreased z-scores and BMI-for-age z-scores of children with bilateral CP and GMFCS IIIâV or dysphagia decreased more significantly than those of children with unilateral CP. Preterm birth was not significantly associated with decreased growth in height, weight and BMI. Reduced growth in children with bilateral CP was strongly associated with moderate to severe impairment in gross motor function (GMFCS IIIâV) and dysphagia.Fil: Ruiz Brunner, MarĂa de Las Mercedes. The Alternative for Germanyâs radicalization in historical-comparative perspective
This article chronicles the AfDâs rightward repositioning and compares it with the programmatic development of three postwar German parties on the ideological wings. By highlighting factors that tilt the balance of power away from moderate reformers towards hardliners, this comparative analysis sheds light on the conditions that lead a relatively successful party on the ideological wings, such as the AfD, to radicalize its programme. Four variables stand out: whether party hardliners take the blame for the recent election loss; whether they offer a convincing programmatic and strategic alternative to the reformers; whether changes in party composition strengthen hardliners; and whether external factors enhance their weight within the party. The essay concludes that the AfDâs radicalization was unusual, but not exceptional. It is however too early to conclude that the Federal Republicâs distinctive institutions and political culture no longer impose significant costs on parties that shift their programmes away from the centre
