The development of a new environment-friendly anticorrosive coating for mild steel substrate is afforded in this work. The combined use of cerium, as a self-healing agent, and clay nanoparticles, as improvers of the barrier properties, was considered to the development of new anticorrosive sol-gel coatings. Nanostructured hybrid films were synthesized by the sol-gel route from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-glicidoxipropyl-trimetoxisilano (GPTMS) using laminar nanoclays (Laponite Na+0.7[Si8Mg5.5Li0.3H4O24]−0.7) to improve mechanical and barrier properties, and Ce(NO3)3?6H2O as a supplier of Ce(III) to provide an inhibiting effect in the event of coating failure. Carbon steel plates, AISI 1010, were used as substrates. Prior to the application of the coating, samples were treated with a phosphoric acid 2% v/v in order to improve coating adherence. In order to evaluate cerium effect, electrochemical behaviour of films containing Laponite and cerium salts (TGL-Ce) were compared with films containing only Laponite (TGL) by means of potentiodynamic polarization tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements using a 0.35 wt% NaCl solution. Microstructural characterization and surface analysis of substrates and sol-gel coatings were performed by optical microscopy and by XPS techniques. The use of nanoclays allowed to achieve a significant improvement of the anticorrosive behaviour of the cerium doped coating at the same time that enhances the physical integrity of the coatings under immersion tests.Fil: Santana, Ianina Cecilia. Chemical and morphological surface modification of epoxy based thermosets

    Get PDF
Recently developed low fluorine containing polymers are advanced materials which confer advantageous properties to surfaces at a lower cost than conventional fluoropolymers (like PTFE), and are also more easily processable. Fluoropolymer surfaces are characterized by a low surface energy, high oleo and hydrophobicity, low coefficients of friction, among many other properties. This makes them desired materials in microelectronics, antifogging, antifouling and medical applications, to name a few. Fluorinated compounds are not easily coupled with macromolecules or com-mon organic systems, and great efforts are made to compatibilize fluorinated species with hydrocarbon polymers. In this work, two chemical routes were explored in order to incorporate perfluorinated alkyl chains in an epoxy-amine based thermoset. On one side, a perfluoroalkyl thiolated molecule was used as a stabilizing ligand for silver nanoparti-cles, which were incorporated in the matrix polymer. On the other hand, fluorinated chains containing epoxy function-alities, were used as the matrix modifier. In the first case, fluorinated chains covering the nanoparticles, were mixed with the matrix, while in the second case, the fluoroalkyl chains were chemically linked to the network. Fluorine migration to the air-polymer interface was confirmed by X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The ma-terials hydrophobicity was then studied in terms of their contact angle with water (CA), as a function of the surface composition and the topography. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), operated in moderate and light tapping modes, were used to morphologically describe the surfaces. An exhaustive surface analy-sis was made in order to explain the different hydrophobicity grades found.Fil: Penoff, Marcela Elisabeth. Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata. Structure and dielectric properties of electrochemically grown ZrO2 films

    Get PDF
The dielectric properties of electrochemically grown zirconium oxide films by anodisation of zirconium in 1.0 mol dm?3 phosphoric acid solution were investigated in a 3 to 30 V potential range with a view to inducing surface modifications for eventual use in biomedical and electronic applications. The oxide films grown at different potentials were characterised by Atomic Force Microscopy, X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies; the latter demonstrated the incorporation of phosphate ions into the passive films. Flat band potentials calculated from the Mott-Shottky analysis of the oxides semiconducting properties confirm the bilayer structure of the films. The oxide dielectric permittivity was evaluated from impedance spectroscopy measurements and the film oxide model proposed gave values independent of the oxide growth potentialFil: Gomez Sanchez, Andrea Valeria. Experimental electrical resistivity results in Heusler, B2 and C1b are discussed. The systematics common to the various alloys can be explained in the intermediate and high temperature range. Some alloys show magnetic scattering only above 20 K, while other alloys still present interpretation difficulties in the low temperature range. ESCA results are presented for the first time in Heusler alloys
