    Asynchronous Stream Processing with S-Net

    © The Author(s) 2010. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.comWe present the rationale and design of S-Net, a coordination language for asynchronous stream processing. The language achieves a near-complete separation between the application code, written in any conventional programming language, and the coordination/communication code written in S-Net. Our approach supports a component technology with flexible software reuse. No extension of the conventional language is required. The interface between S-Net and the application code is in terms of one additional library function. The application code is componentised and presented to S-Net as a set of components, called boxes, each encapsulating a single tuple-to-tuple function. Apart from the boxes defined using an external compute language, S-Net features two built-in boxes: one for network housekeeping and one for data-flow style synchronisation. Streaming network composition under S-Net is based on four network combinators, which have both deterministic and nondeterministic versions. Flexible software reuse is comprehensive, with the box interfaces and even the network structure being subject to subtyping. We propose an inheritance mechanism, named flow inheritance, that is specifically geared towards stream processing.     Increased carotid wall thickening after radiotherapy on the neck.

    Contains fulltext : 48064.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)Patients treated for head and neck tumours with local radiotherapy (RT) on the neck harbour an increased risk of stroke. This may be due to accelerated atherosclerotic changes within the RT-field; however, the real impact of local RT on the carotid artery remains debatable. The aim of the present study was to assess the difference in carotid wall thickness (intima-media thickness) in 42 unilaterally irradiated parotid tumour patients by performing B-mode ultrasonography. A mean difference in intima-media thickness (IMT) of the irradiated compared with the non-irradiated carotid artery of 0.30 mm (P=0.031) was found. A significant correlation was established with a longer post-RT interval (P=0.008). RT on the neck is associated with increased thickening of carotid IMT. Screening and treatment of additional cerebrovascular risk factors which contribute to further IMT thickening and stroke development is recommended, especially in radiotherapy patients with a favourable prognosis

    Structural properties of third-party logistics networks

    A third party logistic provider operates a distribution network with minimal control over supply and demand. The operation is characterized by three levels: a strategic level that includes the location and sizing of warehouses, a tactical level that determines the links between customers, warehouses and producers and an operational level that determines the size of the flows through the links at any given time. An algorithm to optimize the operational level is determined for a given network structure. Starting with a fully connected network a reduced network is found by deleting the least used links until the operational costs increase dramatically. The topological structures of the reduced network as a function of backlog and transportation costs are determined
