    Homelessness in Howard County

    Final project for GVPT388L: Maryland Politics, Policy and Leadership (Fall 2015). University of Maryland, College Park.The ten undergraduate students in this government and policy class were asked to examine homelessness in Howard County as part of the PALS program. Each of them researched the extent of the problem, the services in place to address it, how homelessness is addressed in comparable U.S. counties, and proposals that Howard County could adapt. Each of the ten papers thus overlaps some with others, especially in their description of current County conditions and programs. Their comparative assessment of comparable county programs, however, yields over a dozen examples of interest to Howard County. It is in their recommendations and proposals that the papers will be of greatest interest and use to the County. Numerous ideas are presented and the reader focused on the “bottom line” can peruse these sections of each paper to glean ideas.Howard Count

    Evaluation of intergroup dialogue: A review of the empirical literature

    Practitioners in the developing field of intergroup dialogue seek to address critical social issues of prejudice and intergroup conflict. Goals of dialogue work include relationship building, civic participation, and social change. Outcome evaluation of this work is necessary to further understand the processes and effectiveness of dialogue practices, improve on the work being done, and obtain funding. This literature review summarizes empirical evaluation research in the field of intergroup dialogue and presents a compendium table.     Salud mental para intérpretes y formación de autocuidado

    Tanto nuestras vidas personales como profesionales se llenan con factores estresantes, y en un mundo que se centra en eficacia, trabajo, y productividad, la salud mental y el reconocimiento de la salud mental es cada vez más una parte más importante que nos permite ser miembros más productivos de la sociedad. En el sector laboral de interpretación, estos factores estresantes pueden ser emocionalmente, psicológicamente, y mentalmente debilitante para un intérprete, y puede culminar en la traumatización vicaria y síndrome del desgaste profesional. La carga emocional y psicológica que los intérpretes sufren puede interferir con sus capacidades de funcionar y seguir trabajando en el sector de interpretación. Los intérpretes trabajan en un sector laboral que no ha recibido tanta investigación ni atención con respecto a la salud mental como otros sectores laborales como la medicina o la terapia social. Sin embargo, los factores estresantes que se pueden encontrar se relacionan con su sobreutilización de la empatía, el “freelance”, y la presión que puedan padecer.Frente a estos factores estresantes, las estrategias de autocuidado y conocimiento de otros conceptos psicológicos pueden ayudarles a defenderse contra ellos. Los intérpretes utilizan una variedad amplia de estrategias de autocuidado que les permiten conectarse con ellos mismos y el presente a través de “mindfulness” y ejercicio físico y aportarles más espacio y tiempo para desconectarse de su trabajo a través del descanso y pasatiempos. Además, las otras estrategias de autocuidado por las cuales los intérpretes tienen la oportunidad de expresarse, como la terapia y preparación para una sesión de interpretación por reuniones informativas, pueden servirles mucho aunque no siempre les proveen estos servicios a los intérpretes. Además, el conocimiento y la integración de conceptos psicológicos les sirven mucho para que los intérpretes puedan interiorizar y aumentar la resistencia frente a retos estresantes. Aunque estas estrategias y conceptos tienen el poder para ayudar a los intérpretes en sus vidas, a menudo no tienen acceso a ellos como parte de su formación. A pesar de la falta de apoyo, por varios métodos se puede aprender el autocuidado para que un intérprete mantenga buena salud mental. En libros, cursos, y simplemente por experiencias de la vida, se pueden aprender las estrategias de autocuidado; sin embargo, la educación superior para intérpretes tiene la oportunidad de aportarles el conocimiento fundamental de factores estresantes en el trabajo que van a afrontar, las estrategias de autocuidado, y psicología. Por lo tanto, cuando encuentran dificultades y reconocen que un factor estresante les está impactando, pueden depender de la información que aprendieron en el aula en lugar de sufrir la falta de preparación y conocimiento. La investigación recoge y analiza los datos de un grupo de 80 intérpretes sobre los factores estresantes que han sufrido, las estrategias de autocuidado que han utilizado, y el método por el que han aprendido sobre el autocuidado. Por sintetizar los datos, la investigación tiene algunos objetivos que pretende realizar: (1) demostrar que la educación superior beneficiaría tremendamente de aportar un curso sobre los problemas y cargos que podría impactar negativamente la salud mental y las medidas preventivas de autocuidado y conceptos psicológicos para que toman cuando se los afrontan; (2) comparar y contrastar las estrategias de autocuidado que los intérpretes sufren; (3) analizar el mismo con respecto a la motivación para aprender sobre estas estrategias y (4) iniciar un discurso sobre la importancia sobre la salud mental en el sector laboral que no ha recibido la atención que se merece dado que tiene mucha importancia y ubicuidad a lo largo del mundoBoth our personal and professional lives are replete with stressors and in a world that focuses on efficiency, work, and productivity, mental health and mental health awareness are becoming important parts of our society that allow us to be productive members of society. In the field of interpretation, these stressors can be emotionally, psychologically, and mentally debilitating to an interpreter and can culminate in the interpreter reaching a state of burnout and vicarious trauma. The emotional and psychological toll that interpreters experience can interfere with their ability to function at a normal mental capacity and continue working in their chosen field. Interpreters work in a field that has not received nearly as much research and attention in regard to mental health as other fields have, such as medicine. However, the stressors that they encounter are related to their overuse of empathy, the nature of freelance interpretation, and the pressures that can come from assignments. Despite the previously mentioned work stressors, self-care techniques and awareness of other psychological concepts can help interpreters learn how to counteract them. They can utilize a wide array of self-care techniques that allow them to connect with themselves and the present through mindfulness or physical exercise, as well as to provide them the space and time to disconnect from their workplace through rest and hobbies. Furthermore, other important self- care techniques through which interpreters express themselves such as counseling or preparing for the interpretation session in a debriefing may be helpful for them, although these services are not always available to the interpreter. In addition, understanding psychological concepts can be helpful so that the interpreter can internalize them and increase resilience while facing stressful challenges. Although these techniques and concepts have the power to aid interpreters in their life, they often do not have access to them as a part of their training. Despite the lack of support provided to interpreters, self-care can be learned in many different ways in order for the interpreter to maintain good mental health. From books to courses and simply through life experiences, self-care techniques can be learned; nevertheless, higher education for interpreters has the opportunity to provide them with the fundamental knowledge of work stressors that they may encounter: self-care techniques and psychology. As a result, when they do come across hardships and recognize that a work stressor is affecting them, they can use the information learned in the classroom, which would be superior to lacking the preparation and self-awareness to spiral into poor mental health. This study collects and analyzes data from a group of 80 interpreters about the work stressors they experience, the self- care techniques they utilize, and the way in which they learned about self-care. By studying the data, the study aims to realize a few objectives: (1) show that higher education for interpreters would benefit greatly from providing a fundamental course on the frequent issues and burdens that may be detrimental to their mental health as well as the preventative measures of self-care and psychological concepts that they could face; (2) compare and contrast the self-care techniques and work stressors that interpreters experience; (3) looking at oneself in relation to their motivation to learn about these different techniques; and (4) ignite discussion about the importance of mental health in a field of work that has not received the attention that it deserves, given its high importance and ubiquity throughout the worldMáster Universitario en Comunicación Intercultural, Interpretación y Traducción en los Servicios Públicos.
