Investment-Cash Flow Sensitivity – A Focus on the Panel-Data Econometrics Involved

I revisit Fazzari et al. (1988) seminal paper on the investment-cash flow sensitivity as a measure of financing constraints and augment their approach with the findings from recent papers. I find that the investment-cash flow sensitivity has decreased and mostly disappeared over time, in line with recent literature. This finding is robust to alternative specifications and a number of robustness checks. I contribute to the literature by explicitly analyzing the strict-exogeneity assumption of the fixed-effects and first-differences estimators in empirical practice. The Effects of Stress at Work and at Home on Inflammation and Endothelial Dysfunction

This study examined whether stress at work and at home may be related to dysregulation of inflammation and endothelial function, two important contributors to the development of cardiovascular disease. In order to explore potential biological mechanisms linking stress with cardiovascular health, we investigated cross-sectional associations between stress at work and at home with an inflammation score (n's range from 406–433) and with two endothelial biomarkers (intercellular and vascular adhesion molecules, sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1; n's range from 205–235) in a cohort of healthy US male health professionals. No associations were found between stress at work or at home and inflammation. Men with high or medium levels of stress at work had significantly higher levels of sVCAM-1 (13% increase) and marginally higher levels of sICAM-1 (9% increase), relative to those reporting low stress at work, independent of health behaviors. Men with high levels of stress at home had marginally higher levels of both sVCAM-1 and sICAM-1 than those with low stress at home. While lack of findings related to inflammation are somewhat surprising, if replicated in future studies, these findings may suggest that endothelial dysfunction is an important biological mechanism linking stress at work with cardiovascular health outcomes in men

Self-perceived stress reactivity is an indicator of psychosocial impairment at the workplace

BACKGROUND: Work related stress is associated with a range of debilitating health outcomes. However, no unanimously accepted assessment tool exists for the early identification of individuals suffering from chronic job stress. The psychological concept of self-perceived stress reactivity refers to the individual disposition of a person to answer stressors with immediate as well as long lasting stress reactions, and it could be a valid indicator of current as well as prospective adverse health outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which perceived stress reactivity correlates with various parameters of psychosocial health, cardiovascular risk factors, and parameters of chronic stress and job stress in a sample of middle-aged industrial employees in a so-called "sandwich-position". METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 174 industrial employees were assessed for psychosocial and biological stress parameters. Differences between groups with high and low stress reactivity were analysed. Logistic regression models were applied to identify which parameters allow to predict perceived high versus low stress reactivity. RESULTS: In our sample various parameters of psychosocial stress like chronic stress and effort-reward imbalance were significantly increased in comparison to the normal population. Compared to employees with perceived low stress reactivity, those with perceived high stress reactivity showed poorer results in health-related complaints, depression, anxiety, sports behaviour, chronic stress, and effort-reward imbalance. The educational status of employees with perceived low stress reactivity is higher. Education, cardiovascular complaints, chronic stress, and effort-reward imbalance were moderate predictors for perceived stress reactivity. However, no relationship was found between stress reactivity and cardiovascular risk factors in our sample. CONCLUSIONS: Job stress is a major burden in a relevant subgroup of industrial employees in a middle management position. Self-perceived stress reactivity seems to be an appropriate concept to identify employees who experience psychosocial stress and associated psychological problems at the workplace

Die Europäisierung sozialpolitischer Teilbereiche in der Europäischen Gemeinschaft

Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt die Entwicklung der Europäischen Sozialpolitik dem ökonomisch-theoretischen Idealbild der sozialen Integration Europas gegenüber und zeichnet die Europäische Sozialpolitik anhand der getroffenen Entscheidungen nach. Aus der Europäisierung der Wirtschaft ergeben sich spezielle sozialpolitische Probleme, die eine europäische Lösung erfordern. Es wird sich zeigen, daß die Gemeinschaft in diesen Bereichen seit den Gründungsverträgen Kompetenzen hatte und zu gemeinschaftlichen Politiken gefunden hat. Gleichzeitig wurden im EWG-Vertrag und den Vertragsänderungen durch die Einheitliche Europäische Akte (EEA) und den Vertrag von Maastricht sozialpolitische Teilbereiche angesprochen, die in der Folgezeit auch zu Policies geführt haben, obwohl ihnen keine ökonomische Rechtfertigung zugrunde liegt. Daran zeigt sich das Bestreben der Mitgliedstaaten, einerseits ihre sozialen Systeme nicht durch den Binnenmarkt unter Liberalisierungsdruck geraten zu lassen und andererseits ein soziales Europa auch zugunsten der Arbeitnehmer zu entwickeln. Gerade die Ausdehnung der Gesetzgebung im Arbeitsschutzbereich seit der EEA verdeutlicht zudem den Einfluß der Entscheidungsregel auf die Entscheidungsfindung im Ministerrat. Durch den Vertrag zur Europäischen Union und das Abkommen über die Sozialpolitik werden weitere Kompetenzen auf die Gemeinschaft übertragen, so daß in Zukunft mit einem Ausbau der Europäischen Sozialpolitik zu rechnen ist
