Modification of aluminum alloy surface properties by wave-long laser texturing

    Get PDF
Change of the static contact angle (SCA) of 10 [mu]L distilled water droplet on laser textured aluminium alloy (AMG-6) substrates was studied. The texture was deposited by a laser system based on a fiber laser. An increase in the power of laser radiation is found to lead to a decrease in the SCA measured on the first day after texturing. Change of dispersion and polar surface energy components of textured substrates is determined. Under the influence of the environment, the surface properties of AMG-6 change with time. SCA increased and reached stable state on the twentieth day after texturing

    Double-resonant fast particle-wave interaction

    Get PDF
In future fusion devices fast particles must be well confined in order to transfer their energy to the background plasma. Magnetohydrodynamic instabilities like Toroidal Alfv\'en Eigenmodes or core-localized modes such as Beta Induced Alfv\'en Eigenmodes and Reversed Shear Alfv\'en Eigenmodes, both driven by fast particles, can lead to significant losses. This is observed in many ASDEX Upgrade discharges. The present study applies the drift-kinetic HAGIS code with the aim of understanding the underlying resonance mechanisms, especially in the presence of multiple modes with different frequencies. Of particular interest is the resonant interaction of particles simultaneously with two different modes, referred to as 'double-resonance'. Various mode overlapping scenarios with different q profiles are considered. It is found that, depending on the radial mode distance, double-resonance is able to enhance growth rates as well as mode amplitudes significantly. Surprisingly, no radial mode overlap is necessary for this effect. Quite the contrary is found: small radial mode distances can lead to strong nonlinear mode stabilization of a linearly dominant mode.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures; Nuclear Fusion 52 (2012

СОВРЕМЕННОЕ СОСТОЯНИЕ И ПРОБЛЕМы ОБОГАЩЕНИЯ ТИТАНОЦИРКОНИЕВОГО СыРЬЯ В УКРАИНЕ

    No full text

Geological-hydrogeochemical characteristics of a "silver spring" water source (the Lozovy ridge)

    Get PDF
Geological and hydrogeological characteristics of the Lozovy ridge (Southern Primorye) are studied, as far as karst phenomena are widely distributed within its boundaries. Water-bearing rocks of the karst water source "Silver Spring" ("Serebryany Klyuch"), which is located near the bottom of the "Bear's fang" ("Medvezhiy klyk") cave, are investigated. It is found that karst rocks are presented by calcite (CaCO[3]), and an accessory mineral is barite (BaSO[4]). It is determined that among the trace elements forming the composition of carbonate water-bearing rocks the maximum concentrations are typical for Sr, Ba, Fe, Al, Za, Mn, Cu, and Ni. Also, the chemical composition of the waters taken from the "Silver Spring" water source is studied. These waters are fresh, hydrocarbonate, calcium, and weakly alkaline. Among the elements of the spring, such elements as Sr, Ba, Fe, Al, Zn, Mn, Cu, and Ni have the maximum concentration. The other elements have concentrations less than 1 [mu]g/l

Sex and the Single Gametophyte: Revising the Homosporous Vascular Plant Life Cycle in Light of Contemporary Research

    Get PDF
Homosporous vascular plants are typically depicted as extreme inbreeders, with bisexual gametophytes that produce strictly homozygous sporophytes. This view is promulgated in textbook life cycles despite ample evidence that natural populations of most species regularly outcross. We review research on a variety of mechanisms, including genetic load, asynchronous production of eggs and sperm, and pheromonal control of gamete production, that actively promote heterozygosity in ferns and lycophytes. Evolution of the land plants cannot be reconstructed without accurate depictions of the unique life cycle that has helped make ferns the second most diverse lineage of vascular plants on Earth. With revised illustrations and definitions, we provide scientists, educators, and students with a contemporary understanding of fern and lycophyte reproduction, revealing them as evolutionarily dynamic and exploiting a wide range of mating systems

    7-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-5-methyl-9-phenyl-7H-pyrrolo[2′,3′:4,5]pyrimido[1,6-d]tetrazole

The title compound, C20H16N6O, is composed of a tetrazolo ring and a 4-methoxyphenyl and a benzene-substituted pyrrole ring at the 7 and 9 positions fused to a pyrimidine ring in a nearly planar fashion [maximum deviation of 0.018 (1) Å for the fused ring system]. A methyl group at the 5 position is also in the plane of the hetero cyclic system. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the benzene and 4-methoxyphenyl rings is 40.4 (2)°. The dihedral angles between the mean planes of the pyrimidine and the benzene and 4-methoxyphenyl rings are 15.6 (5)° and 52.6 (7)°, respectively. A weak intramolecular C—H⋯N hydrogen bond interaction, which forms an S(7) graph-set motif, helps to establish the relative conformations of the tetrazolo and benzene rings. In the crystal, weak intermolecular C—H⋯O, C—H⋯π and π–π stacking interactions [centroid–centroid distances = 3.5270 (16), 3.5113 (16), 3.7275 (17) and 3.7866 (17) Å] link the molecules into a two-dimensional array obliquely parallel to (101) and propagating along the b axis

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund. The purpose of this research was to examine the associations of attachment anxiety and avoidance with personal growth following relationship dissolution, and to test breakup distress, rumination, and tendency to rebound with new partners as mediators of these associations. Study 1 (N = 411) and Study 2 (N = 465) measured attachment style, breakup distress, and personal growth; Study 2 additionally measured ruminative reflection, brooding, and proclivity to rebound with new partners. Structural equation modelling revealed in both studies that anxiety was indirectly associated with greater personal growth through heightened breakup distress, whereas avoidance was indirectly associated with lower personal growth through inhibited breakup distress. Study 2 further showed that the positive association of breakup distress with personal growth was accounted for by enhanced reflection and brooding, and that anxious individuals’ greater personal growth was also explained by their proclivity to rebound. These findings suggest that anxious individuals’ hyperactivated breakup distress may act as a catalyst for personal growth by promoting the cognitive processing of breakup-related thoughts and emotions, whereas avoidant individuals’ deactivated distress may inhibit personal growth by suppressing this cognitive work

Subsequently, the hospital system should become far more competitive with supply chains having to react to these changes as patient demand becomes less predictable. Using a qualitative case study methodology, hospital managers are interviewed on a range of issues. Views on the development of the hospital supply chain in different phases are derived, and are used to develop a map of the current hospital chain. The findings show hospital managers anticipating some significant changes to the hospital supply chain and its workings as Patient Choice expands. The research also maps the various aspects of the hospital supply chain as it moves through different operational phases and highlights underlying challenges and complexities. The hospital supply chain, as discussed and mapped in this research, is original work given there are no examples in the literature that provide holistic representations of hospital activity. At the end, specific recommendations are provided that will be of interest to service to managers, researchers, and policymakers
