The 110 watt per kilogram lightweight solar array system

    Get PDF
This ultralightweight solar array system is applied to three generic mission types: (1) interplanetary, (2) geosynchronous, and (3) manned space station. The requirements of each of these missions, as they pertain to the solar array, are presented. Existing lightweight solar array system concepts are reviewed, along with conclusions regarding the applicability of this technology to the feasibility of the ultralightweight solar array system. Several system concepts are included for further evaluation. The existing technology base, as it pertains to solar cells, solar cell covers, interconnects and substrates, and deployable booms, is reviewed. The attitude control of spacecraft with large flexible solar arrays is also discussed

Phase sensitive Brillouin scattering measurements with a novel magneto-optic modulator

A recently reported phase sensitive Brillouin light scattering technique is improved by use of a magnetic modulator. This modulator is based on Brillouin light scattering in a thin ferrite film. Using this magnetic modulator in time- and space Brillouin light scattering measurements we have increased phase contrast and excluded influence of optical inhomogeneities in the sample. We also demonstrate that the quality of the resulting interference patterns can be improved by data postprocessing using the simultaneously recorded information about the reference light

Effects of dark matter annihilation on the first stars

We study the evolution of the first stars in the universe (Population III) from the early pre-Main Sequence until the end of helium burning in the presence of WIMP dark matter annihilation inside the stellar structure. The two different mechanisms that can provide this energy source are the contemporary contraction of baryons and dark matter, and the capture of WIMPs by scattering off the gas with subsequent accumulation inside the star. We find that the first mechanism can generate an equilibrium phase, previously known as a "dark star", which is transient and present in the very early stages of pre-MS evolution. The mechanism of scattering and capture acts later, and can support the star virtually forever, depending on environmental characteristic of the dark matter halo and on the specific WIMP model.Comment: Proceedings of the IAU Symposium 255, "Low-Metallicity Star Formation: From the First Stars to Dwarf Galaxies"; L.K. Evolution of Directed Triangle Motifs in the Google+ OSN

Motifs are a fundamental building block and distinguishing feature of networks. While characteristic motif distribution have been found in many networks, very little is known today about the evolution of network motifs. This paper studies the most important motifs in social networks, triangles, and how directed triangle motifs change over time. Our chosen subject is one of the largest Online Social Networks, Google+. Google+ has two distinguishing features that make it particularly interesting: (1) it is a directed network, which yields a rich set of triangle motifs, and (2) it is a young and fast evolving network, whose role in the OSN space is still not fully understood. For the purpose of this study, we crawled the network over a time period of six weeks, collecting several snapshots. We find that some triangle types display significant dynamics, e.g., for some specific initial types, up to 20% of the instances evolve to other types. Due to the fast growth of the OSN in the observed time period, many new triangles emerge. We also observe that many triangles evolve into less-connected motifs (with less edges), suggesting that growth also comes with pruning. We complement the topological study by also considering publicly available user profile data (mostly geographic locations). The corresponding results shed some light on the semantics of the triangle motifs. Indeed, we find that users in more symmetric triangle motifs live closer together, indicating more personal relationships. In contrast, asymmetric links in motifs often point to faraway users with a high in-degree (celebrities)
