    A consistent interpretation of the low temperature magneto-transport in graphite using the Slonczewski--Weiss--McClure 3D band structure calculations

    Magnetotransport of natural graphite and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) has been measured at mK temperatures. Quantum oscillations for both electron and hole carriers are observed with orbital angular momentum quantum number up to N≈90N\approx90. A remarkable agreement is obtained when comparing the data and the predictions of the Slonczewski--Weiss--McClure tight binding model for massive fermions. No evidence for Dirac fermions is observed in the transport data which is dominated by the crossing of the Landau bands at the Fermi level, corresponding to dE/dkz=0dE/dk_z=0, which occurs away from the HH point where Dirac fermions are expected.Comment: 3 figure

    Using the de Haas-van Alphen effect to map out the closed three-dimensional Fermi surface of natural graphite

    The Fermi surface of graphite has been mapped out using de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) measurements at low temperature with in-situ rotation. For tilt angles Ξ>60∘\theta>60^{\circ} between the magnetic field and the c-axis, the majority electron and hole dHvA periods no longer follow the cos⁥(Ξ)\cos(\theta) behavior demonstrating that graphite has a 3 dimensional closed Fermi surface. The Fermi surface of graphite is accurately described by highly elongated ellipsoids. A comparison with the calculated Fermi surface suggests that the SWM trigonal warping parameter γ3\gamma_3 is significantly larger than previously thought

    Graphite from the viewpoint of Landau level spectroscopy: An effective graphene bilayer and monolayer

    We describe an infrared transmission study of a thin layer of bulk graphite in magnetic fields up to B = 34 T. Two series of absorption lines whose energy scales as sqrtB and B are present in the spectra and identified as contributions of massless holes at the H point and massive electrons in the vicinity of the K point, respectively. We find that the optical response of the K point electrons corresponds, over a wide range of energy and magnetic field, to a graphene bilayer with an effective inter-layer coupling 2\gamma_1, twice the value for a real graphene bilayer, which reflects the crystal ordering of bulk graphite along the c-axis. The K point electrons thus behave as massive Dirac fermions with a mass enhanced twice in comparison to a true graphene bilayer.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Depression and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents with velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS)

    Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) is characterized by a high prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders in childhood and adolescence. These disorders are a source of great impairment in everyday functioning, as well as important risk factors for the emergence of later psychotic disorders. Impairment in daily and social functioning as well as loss of IQ throughout growth are also are well-established correlates of the VCFS. This study aimed to confirm the high prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders. The second objective was to ascertain the correlation between anxious and depressive symptoms and the decline in adaptive and cognitive functioning. A total of 73 children and adolescents with VCFS (mean age 11.9years) underwent psychiatric evaluation. Subjects were further divided into four age groups: ages 6-9, 9-12, 12-15 and 15-18years. Assessments measuring intelligence, anxious and depressive symptoms, and adaptation skills reported by parents were submitted to a subsample of 62 children (mean age 12.2years); 62.2% of the sample showed an anxiety disorder, specific phobia being the most represented at all ages. Lifetime depression concerned 27% of the sample, peaking at age 12-15years. Anxious and depressive symptoms and low IQ were significantly associated with low adaptive functioning. Anxiety and depression are common disorders in children and adolescents with VCFS and have a great impact on adaptive functioning. Clinicians should pay great attention to diagnosis and treatmen

    Magneto-transmission of a thin layer of bulk graphite is compared with spectra taken on multilayer epitaxial graphene prepared by thermal decomposition of a SiC crystal. We focus on the spectral features evolving as \sqrt{B}, which are evidence for the presence of Dirac fermions in both materials. Whereas the results on multi-layer epitaxial graphene can be interpreted within the model of 2D Dirac fermions, the data obtained on bulk graphite can only be explained taking into account the 3D nature of graphite, e.g. by using the standard Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure model.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Optical absorption to probe the quantum Hall ferromagnet at filling factor Μ=1\nu=1

    Optical absorption measurements are used to probe the spin polarization in the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect regimes. The system is fully spin polarized only at filling factor Îœ=1\nu=1 and at very low temperatures(∌40\sim40 mK). A small change in filling factor (ΎΜ≈±0.01\delta\nu\approx\pm0.01) leads to a significant depolarization. This suggests that the itinerant quantum Hall ferromagnet at Îœ=1\nu=1 is surprisingly fragile against increasing temperature, or against small changes in filling factor.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Characterization and prediction of clinical pathways of vulnerability to psychosis through graph signal processing

    Causal interactions between specific psychiatric symptoms could contribute to the heterogenous clinical trajectories observed in early psychopathology. Current diagnostic approaches merge clinical manifestations that co-occur across subjects and could significantly hinder our understanding of clinical pathways connecting individual symptoms. Network analysis techniques have emerged as alternative approaches that could help shed light on the complex dynamics of early psychopathology. The present study attempts to address the two main limitations that have in our opinion hindered the application of network approaches in the clinical setting. Firstly, we show that a multi-layer network analysis approach, can move beyond a static view of psychopathology, by providing an intuitive characterization of the role of specific symptoms in contributing to clinical trajectories over time. Secondly, we show that a Graph-Signal-Processing approach, can exploit knowledge of longitudinal interactions between symptoms, to predict clinical trajectories at the level of the individual. We test our approaches in two independent samples of individuals with genetic and clinical vulnerability for developing psychosis. Novel network approaches can allow to embrace the dynamic complexity of early psychopathology and help pave the way towards a more a personalized approach to clinical care

Nitrate and boron isotopic data indicate an animal source of nitrate (delta N-15-NO3- > 5 parts per thousand, delta O-18-NO3- < 10 parts per thousand and delta B-11 similar to 25 parts per thousand).     Which exercise for low back pain? (WELBack trial) Predicting response to exercise treatments for patients with low back pain : a validation randomized controlled trial protocol

    Introduction Exercise therapy is the most recommended treatment for chronic low back pain (LBP). Effect sizes for exercises are usually small to moderate and could be due to the heterogeneity of people presenting with LBP. Thus, if patients could be better matched to exercise based on individual factors, then the effects of treatment could be greater. A recently published study provided evidence of better outcomes when patients are matched to the appropriate exercise type. The study demonstrated that a 15-item questionnaire, the Lumbar Spine Instability Questionnaire (LSIQ), could identify patients who responded best to one of the two exercise approaches for LBP (motor control and graded activity). The primary aim of the current study isill be to evaluate whether preidentified baseline characteristics, including the LSIQ, can modify the response to two of the most common exercise therapies for non-specific LBP. Secondary aims include an economic evaluations with a cost-effectiveness analysis. Methods and analysis Participants (n=414) will be recruited by primary care professionals and randomised (1:1) to receive motor control exercises or graded activity. Participants will undergo 12 sessions of exercise therapy over an 8-week period. The primary outcome will be physical function at 2 months using the Oswestry Disability Index. Secondary outcomes will be pain intensity, function and quality of life measured at 2, 6 and 12 months. Potential effect modifiers will be the LSIQ, self-efficacy, coping strategies, kinesiophobia and measures of nociceptive pain and central sensitisation. We will construct linear mixed models with terms for participants (fixed), treatment group, predictor (potential effect modifier), treatment group×predictor (potential effect modifier), physiotherapists, treatment group×physiotherapists and baseline score for the dependent variable

    Clinical and cognitive risk factors for psychotic symptoms in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: a transversal and longitudinal approach

    22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with increased risk for schizophrenia. Better identifying risk factors for the emergence of psychotic symptoms in this population is needed to improve clinical assessment and early interventions. Schizophrenia spectrum disorders, hallucinations and delusions were characterized in an original sample of 104 individuals with 22q11DS. Further analysis of positive and negative symptoms was performed in a subsample of 59 individuals. Finally, longitudinal data available in 56 patients were used to explore the developmental trajectories of psychotic symptoms as well as the associations between psychotic symptoms and cognitive functioning. Schizophrenia spectrum disorders and psychotic symptoms were frequent in adolescent and adults with 22q11DS. The severity of hallucinations and non-persecutory delusional ideas discriminated patients at ultra-high risk for conversion to psychosis. Whereas approximately one-third of patients experienced an emergence of psychotic symptoms during a 4-year interval, 20% displayed transient symptoms. Individuals with psychotic symptoms were characterized by a lower cognitive functioning in the context of the 22q11DS. The present study adds important data on the characteristics and developmental trajectory of psychotic symptoms in this population. This information may ultimately help clinicians dealing with these patients to reduce the duration of untreated psychosis and improve outcome
