The Descent Unseen:Greece\u27s Unappreciated Place in British Political History
For hundreds of years, Great Britain possessed an empire and military that allowed it to possess an almost unrivaled power in international politics. However, as World War II drew to a close, it became increasingly evident that Great Britain no longer possessed the power it once had. In Greece, communist protest, and eventually insurrection, began as a result of disagreements in regards to the place of King George II of Greece and the future of free elections in the country after the departure of the German forces. âThe Descent Unseen: Greeceâs Unappreciated Place in British Political Historyâ examines the time from outbreak of violence on December 3, 1944 and the end of June, 1945, Prime Minister Churchillâs last full month in office. As the communication between Allied leaders at the time suggested, negotiations continuously centered on how each World War II ally possessed influence, and how each party could help or hurt Great Britainâs ultimate goal of a free and democratic Greece. This project will examine how, the six-month time period witnessed the fall of Britain as a primary power in international politics, and how the influences of these nations affected the politics of Great Britain in Greece
The Effects of Temperature and Leaf Sugar Content on the Electrical Conductance of Strawberry Leaf Exudates
Once considered to be the inevitable fate of plant life exposed to low temperatures, plant injury is now subject to partial control or alteration under certain conditions. These conditions involve a genetic change in the plant protoplasm by breeding a hardier, more resistant variety or by a change in the environment of the plant that induces resistance to low temperatures. The latter change is frequently known as âhardeningâ of the plant. While the study of these changes has given considerable insight into the subject, there is little understanding of the basic cause or causes of frost injury, nor is the subsequent resolution of the problem known. The bulk of recent scientific investigations into winter injury has been mainly concerned with plant physiology. The detection of measurable differences in the physiological factors under various conditions has offered a means of explaining frost resistance, at least partially. This thesis is a report of a continuation of an investigation into this aspect of the problem. Strawberries were selected for this research because of their susceptibility to frost injury, comparative ease of control for research purposes, and practical significance as a crop in this area. Previous studies at this college have revealed the desirability of applying a protective mulch when the plants have reached a maximum level of stored carbohydrate reserve as determined by sugar analysis. Investigations elsewhere with various plant materials have indicated that numerous other factors including mineral content and permeability of the cell, are involved. The objective of this study then is to examine some of these factors with particular reference to the strawberry plant
The Financial Implications of the Chinese Healthcare System
In 1949 one of the worldâs most powerful and influential countries was born: The Peopleâs Republic of China. Perhaps the greatest challenge the country has consistently faced since its inception has been ensuring a fiscally sound healthcare system. Today, China has the worldâs largest population and a rapidly aging society with 330 million citizens over the age of 65 projected by 2050- nearly the same size as the total U.S. population. Living standards across China have been drastically increasing in recent decades and the Chinese people are desiring better, higher quality healthcare to complement their new lifestyles. With this desire comes Chinaâs unique challenge of scale - operating the worldâs largest healthcare system for 1.4 billion people. This paper introduces the historical perspective and background of Chinaâs healthcare system, the major phases of reforms, how successful those reforms have been, and finally explores the financial impact Chinaâs healthcare system has had around the globe
A Predictive Analytics Approach to Building a Decision Support System for Improving Graduation Rates at a Four-Year College
Although graduation rates have interested stakeholders, educational researchers, and policymakers for some time, little progress has been made on the overall graduation rate at four-year state colleges. Even though selective admission based on academic indicators such as high school GPA and ACT/ SAT have widely been used in the USA for years, and recent statistics show that less than 40% of students graduate from four-year state colleges in four years in the US. The authors propose using an ensemble of analytic models that considers cost as a better form of analysis that can be used as input to decision support systems to inform decision makers and help them choose intervention methods. This article uses ten years of data for 10,000 students and applies ten analytical models to find the best predictor of at-risk students. This research also uses the receiver operating characteristic curve to help determine the most cost-effective trade-off between false positive and false negative levels
Enhanced and reduced atom number fluctuations in a BEC splitter
We measure atom number statistics after splitting a gas of ultracold 87Rb
atoms in a purely magnetic double-well potential created on an atom chip. Well
below the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation T_c, we observe
reduced fluctuations down to -4.9dB below the atom shot noise level.
Fluctuations rise to more than +3.8dB close to T_c, before reaching the shot
noise level for higher temperatures. We use two-mode and classical field
simulations to model these results. This allows us to confirm that the
super-shot noise fluctuations directly originate from quantum statistics
