    Experimental active and passive dosimetry systems for the NASA Skylab program

    Active and passive dosimetry instrumentation to measure absorbed dose, charged particle spectra, and linear energy transfer spectra inside the command module and orbital workshop on the Skylab program were developed and tested. The active dosimetry system consists of one integral unit employing both a tissue equivalent ionization chamber and silicon solid state detectors. The instrument measures dose rates from 0.2 millirad/hour to 25 rads/hour, linear energy transfer spectra from 2.8 to 42.4 Kev/micron, and the proton and alpha particle energy spectra from 0.5 to 75 Mev. The active dosimeter is equipped with a portable radiation sensor for use in astronaut on-body and spacecraft shielding surveys during passage of the Skylab through significant space radiations. Data are transmitted in real time or are recorded by onboard spacecraft tape recorder for rapid evaluation of the radiation levels. The passive dosimetry systems consist of twelve (12) hard-mounted assemblies, each containing a variety of passive radiation sensors which are recoverable at the end of the mission for analysis

    Hall effect in laser ablated Co_2(Mn,Fe)Si thin films

    Pulsed laser deposition was employed to grow thin films of the Heusler compounds Co_2MnSi and Co_2FeSi. Epitaxial growth was realized both directly on MgO (100) and on a Cr or Fe buffer layer. Structural analysis by x-ray and electron diffraction shows for both materials the ordered L2_1 structure. Bulk magnetization was determined with a SQUID magnetometer. The values agree with the Slater-Pauling rule for half-metallic Heusler compounds. On the films grown directly on the substrate measurements of the Hall effect have been performed. The normal Hall effect is nearly temperature independent and points towards a compensated Fermi surface. The anomalous contribution is found to be dominated by skew scattering. A remarkable sign change of both normal and anomalous Hall coefficients is observed on changing the valence electron count from 29 (Mn) to 30 (Fe).Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures submitted to J Phys

    Analysis of Algorithms for Velocity Estimation from Discrete Position Versus Time Data

    Algorithms for constructing velocity approximations from discrete position versus time data are investigated. The study is limited to algorithms suitable to provide velocity information in discrete-time feedback control systems such as microprocessor-based systems with a discrete position encoder. Velocity estimators based on lines per period, reciprocal-time, Taylor series expansion, backward difference expansions, and least-square curve fits are presented. Based on computer simulations, comparisons of relative accuracies of the different algorithms are made. The least-squares velocity estimators filtered the effect of imperfect measurements best, whereas the Taylor series expansions and backward difference equation estimators respond better to velocity transients

    Role of the cellular environment in interstitial stem cell proliferation in Hydra

    The role of the cellular environment on hydra stem cell proliferation and differentiation was investigated by introduction of interstitial cells into host tissue of defined cellular composition. In epithelial tissue lacking all non-epithelial cells the interstitial cell population did not grow but differentiated into nerve cells and nematocytes. In host tissue with progressively increased numbers of nerve cells growth of the interstitial cell population was positively correlated to the nerve cell density. In agreement with previous observations (Bode et al. 1976), growth of the interstitial cell population was also found to be negatively correlated to the level of interstitial cells present. The strong correlation between the growth of the interstitial cell population and the presence of interstitial cells and nerve cells implies that interstitial cell proliferation is controlled by a feedback signal from interstitial cells and their derivatives. Our results suggest that the cellular environment of interstitial cells provides cues which are instrumental in stem cell decision making

    Iterated Binomial Sums and their Associated Iterated Integrals

    We consider finite iterated generalized harmonic sums weighted by the binomial (2kk)\binom{2k}{k} in numerators and denominators. A large class of these functions emerges in the calculation of massive Feynman diagrams with local operator insertions starting at 3-loop order in the coupling constant and extends the classes of the nested harmonic, generalized harmonic and cyclotomic sums. The binomially weighted sums are associated by the Mellin transform to iterated integrals over square-root valued alphabets. The values of the sums for N→∞N \rightarrow \infty and the iterated integrals at x=1x=1 lead to new constants, extending the set of special numbers given by the multiple zeta values, the cyclotomic zeta values and special constants which emerge in the limit N→∞N \rightarrow \infty of generalized harmonic sums. We develop algorithms to obtain the Mellin representations of these sums in a systematic way. They are of importance for the derivation of the asymptotic expansion of these sums and their analytic continuation to N∈CN \in \mathbb{C}. The associated convolution relations are derived for real parameters and can therefore be used in a wider context, as e.g. for multi-scale processes. We also derive algorithms to transform iterated integrals over root-valued alphabets into binomial sums.     Structural, magnetic, and transport properties of Co2_2FeSi Heusler films

    We report the deposition of thin Co2_2FeSi films by RF magnetron sputtering. Epitaxial (100)-oriented and L21_1 ordered growth is observed for films grown on MgO(100) substrates. (110)-oriented films on Al2_2O3_3(110) show several epitaxial domains in the film plane. Investigation of the magnetic properties reveals a saturation magnetization of 5.0 muB/f.u.mu_B/f.u. at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the resistivity rhoxx(T)rho_{xx}(T) exhibits a crossover from a T^3.5 law at T<50K to a T^1.65 behaviour at elevated temperatures. rhoxx(H)rho_{xx}(H) shows a small anisotropic magnetoresistive effect. A weak dependence of the normal Hall effect on the external magnetic field indicates the compensation of electron and hole like contributions at the Fermi surface.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures to be published in J.     Electronic transport in quantum cascade structures

    The transport in complex multiple quantum well heterostructures is theoretically described. The model is focused on quantum cascade detectors, which represent an exciting challenge due to the complexity of the structure containing 7 or 8 quantum wells of different widths. Electronic transport can be fully described without any adjustable parameter. Diffusion from one subband to another is calculated with a standard electron-optical phonon hamiltonian, and the electronic transport results from a parallel flow of electrons using all the possible paths through the different subbands. Finally, the resistance of such a complex device is given by a simple expression, with an excellent agreement with experimental results. This relation involves the sum of transitions rates between subbands, from one period of the device to the next one. This relation appears as an Einstein relation adapted to the case of complex multiple quantum structures.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
