The initial temporal evolution of a feedback dynamo for Mercury
Various possibilities are currently under discussion to explain the observed
weakness of the intrinsic magnetic field of planet Mercury. One of the possible
dynamo scenarios is a dynamo with feedback from the magnetosphere. Due to its
weak magnetic field Mercury exhibits a small magnetosphere whose subsolar
magnetopause distance is only about 1.7 Hermean radii. We consider the magnetic
field due to magnetopause currents in the dynamo region. Since the external
field of magnetospheric origin is antiparallel to the dipole component of the
dynamo field, a negative feedback results. For an alpha-omega-dynamo two
stationary solutions of such a feedback dynamo emerge, one with a weak and the
other with a strong magnetic field. The question, however, is how these
solutions can be realized. To address this problem, we discuss various
scenarios for a simple dynamo model and the conditions under which a steady
weak magnetic field can be reached. We find that the feedback mechanism
quenches the overall field to a low value of about 100 to 150 nT if the dynamo
is not driven too strongly
Direct Optical Coupling to an Unoccupied Dirac Surface State in the Topological Insulator BiSe
We characterize the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure of the
topological insulator BiSe by one-photon and two-photon angle-resolved
photoemission spectroscopy and slab band structure calculations. We reveal a
second, unoccupied Dirac surface state with similar electronic structure and
physical origin to the well-known topological surface state. This state is
energetically located 1.5 eV above the conduction band, which permits it to be
directly excited by the output of a Ti:Sapphire laser. This discovery
demonstrates the feasibility of direct ultrafast optical coupling to a
topologically protected, spin-textured surface state.Comment: Accepted to Physical Review Letter
Searching for targets for the systemic therapy of mesothelioma
Increasing knowledge about the molecular characteristics of mesothelioma had led to the identification of novel potential targets for systemic therapy. This review elaborates on the rationale behind targeted approaches that have been and are undergoing exploration in mesothelioma and summarizes available clinical results and ongoing efforts to improve the systemic therapy of mesotheliom
How to quantify deterministic and random influences on the statistics of the foreign exchange market
It is shown that prize changes of the US dollar - German Mark exchange rates
upon different delay times can be regarded as a stochastic Marcovian process.
Furthermore we show that from the empirical data the Kramers-Moyal coefficients
can be estimated.
Finally, we present an explicite Fokker-Planck equation which models very
precisely the empirical probabilitiy distributions.Comment: 3 figure
Propagation of a hole on a Neel background
We analyze the motion of a single hole on a N\'eel background, neglecting
spin fluctuations. Brinkman and Rice studied this problem on a cubic lattice,
introducing the retraceable-path approximation for the hole Green's function,
exact in a one-dimensional lattice. Metzner et al. showed that the
approximationalso becomes exact in the infinite-dimensional limit. We introduce
a new approach to this problem by resumming the Nagaoka expansion of the
propagator in terms of non-retraceable skeleton-paths dressed by
retraceable-path insertions. This resummation opens the way to an almost
quantitative solution of the problemin all dimensions and, in particular sheds
new light on the question of the position of the band-edges. We studied the
motion of the hole on a double chain and a square lattice, for which deviations
from the retraceable-path approximation are expected to be most pronounced. The
density of states is mostly adequately accounted for by the
retra\-ce\-able-path approximation. Our band-edge determination points towards
an absence of band tails extending to the Nagaoka energy in the spectrums of
the double chain and the square lattice. We also evaluated the spectral density
and the self-energy, exhibiting k-dependence due to finite dimensionality. We
find good agreement with recent numerical results obtained by Sorella et al.
with the Lanczos spectra decoding method. The method we employ enables us to
identify the hole paths which are responsible for the various features present
in the density of states and the spectral density.Comment: 26 pages,Revte
Striatal dopamine D2 receptor binding of risperidone in schizophrenic patients as assessed by 123I-iodobenzamide SPECT: a comparative study with olanzapine
The aim of this investigation was to compare the degree of striatal dopamine-(D2) receptor blockade by two atypical antipsychotic drugs, risperidone and olanzapine. The percentage of D2 receptor occupancy during treatment was calculated by comparing the results of 123I-iodobenzamide SPECT with those from healthy control subjects. Twenty inpatients suffering from schizophrenia or schizoaffective psychosis according to DSM IV/ICD-10 criteria were treated with clinically recommended doses of risperidone and compared with 13 inpatients treated with up to 20 mg olanzapine. Neuroleptic dose and D2 receptor blockade correlated strongly for both risperidone (Pearson r = –0.86, p = 0.0001) and olanzapine (Pearson r = –0.77, p = 0.002). There was no significant difference between the D2 receptor occupancy of the two substances when given in the clinically recommended dose range (unpaired t-test, t= –0.112, p=0.911)
A nonextensive entropy approach to solar wind intermittency
The probability distributions (PDFs) of the differences of any physical
variable in the intermittent, turbulent interplanetary medium are scale
dependent. Strong non-Gaussianity of solar wind fluctuations applies for short
time-lag spacecraft observations, corresponding to small-scale spatial
separations, whereas for large scales the differences turn into a Gaussian
normal distribution. These characteristics were hitherto described in the
context of the log-normal, the Castaing distribution or the shell model. On the
other hand, a possible explanation for nonlocality in turbulence is offered
within the context of nonextensive entropy generalization by a recently
introduced bi-kappa distribution, generating through a convolution of a
negative-kappa core and positive-kappa halo pronounced non-Gaussian structures.
The PDFs of solar wind scalar field differences are computed from WIND and ACE
data for different time lags and compared with the characteristics of the
theoretical bi-kappa functional, well representing the overall scale dependence
of the spatial solar wind intermittency. The observed PDF characteristics for
increased spatial scales are manifest in the theoretical distribution
functional by enhancing the only tuning parameter , measuring the
degree of nonextensivity where the large-scale Gaussian is approached for
. The nonextensive approach assures for experimental studies
of solar wind intermittency independence from influence of a priori model
assumptions. It is argued that the intermittency of the turbulent fluctuations
should be related physically to the nonextensive character of the
interplanetary medium counting for nonlocal interactions via the entropy
generalization.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophys.
