Stochastic energy-cascade model for 1+1 dimensional fully developed turbulence
Geometrical random multiplicative cascade processes are often used to model
positive-valued multifractal fields such as the energy dissipation in fully
developed turbulence. We propose a dynamical generalization describing the
energy dissipation in terms of a continuous and homogeneous stochastic field in
one space and one time dimension. In the model, correlations originate in the
overlap of the respective spacetime histories of field amplitudes. The
theoretical two- and three-point correlation functions are found to be in good
agreement with their equal-time counterparts extracted from wind tunnel
turbulent shear flow data
Cerebral differences in explicit and implicit emotional processing - An fMRI study
The processing of emotional facial expression is a major part of social communication and understanding. In addition to explicit processing, facial expressions are also processed rapidly and automatically in the absence of explicit awareness. We investigated 12 healthy subjects by presenting them with an implicit and explicit emotional paradigm. The subjects reacted significantly faster in implicit than in explicit trials but did not differ in their error ratio. For the implicit condition increased signals were observed in particular in the thalami, the hippocampi, the frontal inferior gyri and the right middle temporal region. The analysis of the explicit condition showed increased blood-oxygen-level-dependent signals especially in the caudate nucleus, the cingulum and the right prefrontal cortex. The direct comparison of these 2 different processes revealed increased activity for explicit trials in the inferior, superior and middle frontal gyri, the middle cingulum and left parietal regions. Additional signal increases were detected in occipital regions, the cerebellum, and the right angular and lingual gyrus. Our data partially confirm the hypothesis of different neural substrates for the processing of implicit and explicit emotional stimuli. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel

Piezoelectricity and rotostriction through polar and non-polar coupled instabilities in bismuth-based piezoceramics
Coupling of order parameters provides a means to tune functionality in advanced materials including
multiferroics, superconductors, and ionic conductors. We demonstrate that the response of a frustrated
ferroelectric state leads to coupling between order parameters under electric field depending on grain
orientation. The strain of grains oriented along a specific crystallographic direction, 〈h00〉, is caused by
converse piezoelectricity originating from a ferrodistortive tetragonal phase. For 〈hhh〉 oriented grains,
the strain results from converse piezoelectricity and rotostriction, as indicated by an antiferrodistortive
instability that promotes octahedral tilting in a rhombohedral phase. Both strain mechanisms
combined lead to a colossal local strain of (2.4 ± 0.1) % and indicate coupling between oxygen
octahedral tilting and polarization, here termed “rotopolarization”. These findings were confirmed with
electromechanical experiments, in situ neutron diffraction, and in situ transmission electron microscopy
in 0.75BiNaTiO-0.25SrTiO. This work demonstrates that polar and non-polar instabilities can
cooperate to provide colossal functional responses
