    In 1992 Speckhard and Rue argued in the Journal of Social Issues for the recognition of a diagnostic category, post-abortion syndrome (PAS). This term was first used in 1981 by Vincent Rue in testimony to the American Congress, but was only formalised in a published paper a decade later. Speckhard and Rue (1992) posit that abortion is a psychosocial stressor that may cause mild distress through to severe trauma, creating the need for a continuum of categories, these being post-abortion distress, post-abortion syndrome and post-abortion psychosis. PAS, which is the main focus of their paper, and which has taken root in some professional language as well as lay anti-abortion discourse, is described as a type of post-traumatic stress disorder

    The effect of different cardiovascular risk presentation formats on intentions, understanding and emotional affect: a randomised controlled trial using a web-based risk formatter (protocol)

    Background The future risk of heart disease can be predicted with increasing precision. However, more research is needed into how this risk is conveyed and presented. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of presenting cardiovascular risk in different formats on individuals' intention to change behaviour to reduce risk, understanding of risk information and emotional affect. Methods/design A randomised controlled trial comprising four arms, with a between subjects design will be performed. There will be two intervention groups and two control groups. The first control comprises a pre-intervention questionnaire and presents risk in a bar graph format. The second control presents risk in a bar graph format without pre-intervention questionnaire. These two control groups are to account for the potential Hawthorne effect of thinking about cardiovascular risk before viewing actual risk. The two intervention groups comprise presenting risk in either a pictogram or metonym format (image depicting seriousness of having a myocardial infarction). 800 individuals' aged between 45 and 64 years, who have not been previously diagnosed with heart disease and have access to a computer with internet, will be given a link to a website comprising a risk calculator and electronic questionnaires. 10-year risk of having a coronary heart disease event will be assessed and presented in one of the three formats. A post-intervention questionnaire will be completed after viewing the risk format. Main outcome measures are (i) intention to change behaviour, (ii) understanding of risk information, (iii) emotional affect and (iv) worry about future heart disease. Secondary outcomes are the sub-components of the theory of planned behaviour: attitudes, perceived behavioural control and subjective norms. Discussion Having reviewed the literature, we are not aware of any other studies which have used the assessment of actual risk, in a trial to compare different graphical cardiovascular risk presentation formats. This trial will provide data about which graphical cardiovascular risk presentation format is most effective in encouraging behaviour change to reduce cardiovascular risk.     Small Molecule Activation by Uranium Tris(aryloxides): Experimental and Computational Studies of Binding of N-2, Coupling of CO, and Deoxygenation Insertion of CO2 under Ambient Conditions

    Previously unanticipated dinitrogen activation is exhibited by the well-known uranium tris(aryloxide) U(ODtbp)(3), U(OC6H3-Bu-2(t)-2,6)(3), and the tri-tert-butyl analogue U(OTtbp)(3), U(OC6H2-Bu-3(t)-2,4,6)(3), in the form of bridging, side-on dinitrogen complexes [U(OAr)(3)](2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N-2), for which the tri-tert-butyl N-2 complex is the most robust U-2(N-2) complex isolated to date. Attempted reduction of the tris(aryloxide) complex under N-2 gave only the potassium salt of the uranium(III) tetra(aryloxide) anion, K[U(OAr)(4)], as a result of ligand redistribution. The solid-state structure is a polymeric chain formed by each potassium cation bridging two arenes of adjacent anions in an eta(6) fashion. The same uranium tris(aryloxides) were also found to couple carbon monoxide under ambient conditions to give exclusively the ynediolate [OCCO](2-) dianion in [U(OAr)(3)](2)(mu-eta(1):eta(1)-C2O2), in direct analogy with the reductive coupling recently shown to afford [U{N(SiMe3)(2)}(3)](2)(mu-eta(1):eta(1)-C2O2). The related U-III complexes U{N(SiPhMe2)(2)}(3) and U{CH(SiMe3)(2)}(3) however do not show CO coupling chemistry in our hands. Of the aryloxide complexes, only the U(OC6H2-Bu-3(t)-2,4,6)(3) reacts with CO2 to give an insertion product containing bridging oxo and aryl carbonate moieties, U-2(OTtbp)(4)(mu-O)(mu-eta(1):eta(1)-O2COC6H2-Bu-3(t)-2,4,6)(2), which has been structurally characterized. The presence of coordinated N-2 in [U(OTtbp)(3)](2)(N-2) prevents the occurrence of any reaction with CO2, underscoring the remarkable stability of the N-2 complex. The di-tert-butyl aryloxide does not insert CO2, and only U(ODtbp)(4) was isolated. The silylamide also reacts with carbon dioxide to afford U(OSiMe3)(4) as the only uranium-containing material. GGA and hybrid DFT calculations, in conjunction with topological analysis of the electron density, suggest that the U-N-2 bond is strongly polar, and that the only covalent U -> N-2 interaction is pi backbonding, leading to a formal (U-IV)(2)(N-2)(2-) description of the electronic structure. The N-N stretching wavenumber is preferred as a metric of N-2 reduction to the N-N bond length, as there is excellent agreement between theory and experiment for the former but poorer agreement for the latter due to X-ray crystallographic underestimation of r(N-N). Possible intermediates on the CO coupling pathway to [U(OAr)(3)](2)(mu-C2O2) are identified, and potential energy surface scans indicate that the ynediolate fragment is more weakly bound than the ancillary ligands, which may have implications in the development of low-temperature and pressure catalytic CO chemistry

    Motivational Interviewing as Evidence-Based Practice? An Example from Sexual Risk Reduction Interventions Targeting Adolescents and Young Adults

    This paper critically examines sexual risk reduction interventions, more specifically how they are evaluated and the implications that this has for sexual health policy. The focus is on motivational interviewing (MI) interventions which aim to promote protective behaviors related to sexual risk on the part of young people. MI has become increasingly popular, largely due to it being a highly flexible counseling approach that may, with adequate staff training, and fidelity in implementation, be tailored to many different settings (e.g., health care, schools and in community work). Following a scoping review that comprised 34 papers, of which 29 were unique studies, the range and type of existing research were examined. The results show a wide range of study designs and evaluation procedures, MI conceptualizations, modes of MI delivery, and the particular sub-populations of youth and sexual risk behaviors targeted. While this makes it difficult to draw any generalized conclusions about “what works” in prevention, it provides important insights about the complexity of sexual risk behavior as well as complex behavioral treatment approaches like MI. We therefore problematize the political drive to implement evidence-based methods without adequate resource allocation and contextual adaptation
