    Quasideuteron states with deformed core

    The M1 transitions between low-lying T=1 and T=0 states in deformed odd-odd N=Z nuclei are analyzed in the frames of the rotor-plus-particle model. Using the representation of an explicit coupling of angular momenta we show that strong coupling of the quasideuteron configurations to the axially deformed core results in a distribution of the total 0+ --> 1+ strength among a few low-lying 1+ states. Simple analytical formulae for B(M1) values are derived. The realization of the M1 sum rule for the low-lying 1+,T=0 states is indicated. The calculated B(M1) values are found to be in good agreement with experimental data and reveal specific features of collectivity in odd-odd N=Z nuclei.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, LaTe

    Electron Spin Injection at a Schottky Contact

    We investigate theoretically electrical spin injection at a Schottky contact between a spin-polarized electrode and a non-magnetic semiconductor. Current and electron density spin-polarizations are discussed as functions of barrier energy and semiconductor doping density. The effect of a spin-dependent interface resistance that results from a tunneling region at the contact/semiconductor interface is described. The model can serve as a guide for designing spin-injection experiments with regard to the interface properties and device structure.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Inherent thermometry in a hybrid superconducting tunnel junction

    We discuss inherent thermometry in a Superconductor - Normal metal - Superconductor tunnel junction. In this configuration, the energy selectivity of single-particle tunneling can provide a significant electron cooling, depending on the bias voltage. The usual approach for measuring the electron temperature consists in using an additional pair of superconducting tunnel junctions as probes. In this paper, we discuss our experiment performed on a different design with no such thermometer. The quasi-equilibrium in the central metallic island is discussed in terms of a kinetic equation including injection and relaxation terms. We determine the electron temperature by comparing the micro-cooler experimental current-voltage characteristic with isothermal theoretical predictions. The limits of validity of this approach, due to the junctions asymmetry, the Andreev reflection or the presence of sub-gap states are discussed

    Can childcare work be designed to promote moderate and vigorous physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness and health? Study protocol for the Goldilocks-childcare randomised controlled trial

    Background: Despite extensive efforts, issues like obesity and poor physical capacity remain challenges for a healthy work life in several occupations. The Goldilocks work principle offers a new approach, encouraging design of productive work to promote physical capacity and health. This paper presents the protocol for the Goldilocks-childcare study, a randomised controlled intervention trial aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Goldilocks work principle in childcare. The primary aim of the intervention is to increase time in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) by having the childcare workers act as active role models for children in daily playful physical activities, and thereby improve cardiorespiratory fitness and health of the workers. Methods: The study is a cluster-randomised trial with a usual-practice wait-list control group. The 10-week intervention consists of two phases. In the first, the childcare workers will participate in two participatory workshops aiming to a) develop playful physical activities ('Goldilocks-games') for children in which childcare workers participate as active role models at MVPA intensity, and b) develop action plans for implementation of the Goldilocks-games in daily work routines. In the second phase, childcare institutions will implement the Goldilocks-games. The primary outcome is working time spent in MVPA, and secondary outcomes are cardiorespiratory fitness, sleeping heart rate, perceived need for recovery, and productivity. Primary outcome and process evaluation will be based on direct measurements of physical activity and heart rate, determination of cardiorespiratory fitness, and questionnaires. Discussion: If proven effective, the Goldilocks work principle has a large potential for promoting sustainable health and working lives of childcare workers.     Spin-Polarized Electron Transport at Ferromagnet/Semiconductor Schottky Contacts

    We theoretically investigate electron spin injection and spin-polarization sensitive current detection at Schottky contacts between a ferromagnetic metal and an n-type or p-type semiconductor. We use spin-dependent continuity equations and transport equations at the drift-diffusion level of approximation. Spin-polarized electron current and density in the semiconductor are described for four scenarios corresponding to the injection or the collection of spin polarized electrons at Schottky contacts to n-type or p-type semiconductors. The transport properties of the interface are described by a spin-dependent interface resistance, resulting from an interfacial tunneling region. The spin-dependent interface resistance is crucial for achieving spin injection or spin polarization sensitivity in these configurations. We find that the depletion region resulting from Schottky barrier formation at a metal/semiconductor interface is detrimental to both spin injection and spin detection. However, the depletion region can be tailored using a doping density profile to minimize these deleterious effects. For example, a heavily doped region near the interface, such as a delta-doped layer, can be used to form a sharp potential profile through which electrons tunnel to reduce the effective Schottky energy barrier that determines the magnitude of the depletion region. The model results indicate that efficient spin-injection and spin-polarization detection can be achieved in properly designed structures and can serve as a guide for the structure design.Comment: RevTex

    First-principles Calculation of the Formation Energy in MgO-CaO Solid Solutions

    The electronic structure and total energy were calculated for ordered and disordered MgO-CaO solid solutions within the multiple scattering theory in real space and the local density approximation. Based on the dependence of the total energy on the unit cell volume the equilibrium lattice parameter and formation energy were determined for different solution compositions. The formation energy of the solid solutions is found to be positive that is in agreement with the experimental phase diagram, which shows a miscibility gap.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

    Betamethasone phosphate reduces the efficacy of antenatal steroid therapy and is associated with lower birth weights when administered to pregnant sheep in combination with betamethasone acetate

    Background Antenatal corticosteroid (ACS) therapy is standard of care for women at imminent risk of preterm labour. Despite this, much remains to be understood regarding an optimal (maximum benefit, minimal risk of side effects) ACS dosing strategy. Although conveying overall benefit when given to the right patient at the right time, ACS treatment efficacy is highly variable, and is not risk-free. Building on earlier findings, we hypothesized that when administered in combination with slow-release betamethasone acetate, betamethasone phosphate and the high materno-fetal betamethasone concentrations it generates are redundant for fetal lung maturation. Objective Using an established sheep model of prematurity and post-natal ventilation of the preterm lamb, we aimed to compare the pharmacodynamic effects of a low-dose treatment with betamethasone acetate only against a standard dose of betamethasone phosphate and betamethasone acetate as recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for women at risk of imminent preterm delivery between 24 and 35+6 weeks’ gestation. Methods Ewes carrying a single fetus at 122±1 d gestational age (term=150d) were randomized to receive either: i) maternal intramuscular injections of sterile saline (the Saline Negative Control Group, n=12), ii) two maternal intramuscular injections of 0.25 mg/kg betamethasone phosphate + acetate spaced by 24h (the Beta-P+Ac Group, n=12); or iii) two maternal intramuscular injections of 0.125 mg/kg betamethasone acetate spaced by 24h (the Beta-Ac Group, n=11). Fetuses were surgically delivered 48h after treatment initiation and ventilated for 30 minutes to determine functional lung maturation. Fetuses were euthanized after ventilation and lung were collected for analysis using quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot assays. Fetal plasma ACTH levels were measured in the cord blood samples taken at delivery. Results Preterm lambs were defined as either ACS treatment responders or non-responders using an arbitrary cut-off, being a PaCO2 level at 30 minutes of ventilation being more extreme than two standard deviations from the mean value of the normally-distributed Saline Control Group values. Relative to Saline Control Group animals, both ACS treatment group animals showed significantly improved lung physiological responses (blood gas and ventilation data) and had a biochemical signature (mRNA and surfactant protein assays) consistent with functional maturation. However, the Beta-Ac Group had a significantly higher treatment response rate than the Beta-P+Ac Group. These physiological results were strongly correlated to the amount of surfactant protein A. Birth weight was lower in Beta-P+Ac Group and the fetal HPA axis was supressed to a greater extent in the Beta-P+Ac Group. Conclusion Low dose ACS therapy solely employing Beta-Ac was sufficient for fetal lung maturation. The elevated materno-fetal betamethasone concentrations associated with the co-administration of betamethasone phosphate did not additionally improve lung maturation, but were associated with greater HPA axis suppression, a lower ACS treatment response rate, and lower birth weight – outcomes not desirable in a clinical setting. These data warrant a clinical investigation of sustained, low-dose ACS treatments that avoid high materno-fetal betamethasone exposures

    Experimental evidence for 56Ni-core breaking from the low-spin structure of the N=Z nucleus 58Cu

    Low-spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 58Cu were investigated with the 58Ni(p,n gamma)58Cu fusion evaporation reaction at the FN-tandem accelerator in Cologne. Seventeen low spin states below 3.6 MeV and 17 new transitions were observed. Ten multipole mixing ratios and 17 gamma-branching ratios were determined for the first time. New detailed spectroscopic information on the 2+,2 state, the Isobaric Analogue State (IAS) of the 2+,1,T=1 state of 58Ni, makes 58Cu the heaviest odd-odd N=Z nucleus with known B(E2;2+,T=1 --> 0+,T=1) value. The 4^+ state at 2.751 MeV, observed here for the first time, is identified as the IAS of the 4+,1,T=1 state in 58Ni. The new data are compared to full pf-shell model calculations with the novel GXPF1 residual interaction and to calculations within a pf5/2 configurational space with a residual surface delta interaction. The role of the 56Ni core excitations for the low-spin structure in 58Cu is discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Early colonization pattern of maize (Zea mays L. Poales, Poaceae) roots by Herbaspirillum seropedicae (Burkholderiales, Oxalobacteraceae)

    The bacterium Herbaspirillum seropedicae is an endophytic diazotroph found in several plants, including economically important poaceous species. However, the mechanisms involved in the interaction between H. seropedicae and these plants are not completely characterized. We investigated the attachment of Herbaspirillum to maize roots and the invasion of the roots by this bacterium using H. seropedicae strain SMR1 transformed with the suicide plasmid pUTKandsRed, which carries a mini-Tn5 transposon containing the gene for the Discosoma red fluorescent protein (Dsred) constitutively expressed together with the kanamycin resistance gene. Integration of the mini-Tn5 into the bacterial chromosome yielded the mutant H. seropedicae strain RAM4 which was capable of expressing Dsred and could be observed on and inside fresh maize root samples. Confocal microscopy of maize roots inoculated with H. seropedicae three days after germination showed that H. seropedicae cell were attached to the root surface 30 min after inoculation, were visible in the internal tissues after twenty-four hours and in the endodermis, the central cylinder and xylem after three days
