Effect of sintering conditions on microstructure and dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics
The influence of sintering temperature and dwell time on the microstructure formation and dielectric properties of CaCu_(3)Ti_(4)O_(12) ceramics was investigated. For sintering temperatures of 1050 and 1100 °C significant differences in the CaCu_(3)Ti_(4)O_(12) ceramic microstructure and the segregation of a CuO_(x)-rich phase towards the grain boundary (GB) areas were observed with increasing dwell time. In addition to the formation of a semiconducting bulk and insulating grain boundary phase the segregated CuO_(x) forms an intergranular phase, and the effects of this phase on the dielectric properties are rather intriguing. At sintering temperature below 1050 °C only small amounts of CuO_(x) segregate, whereas sintering above 1050 °C (e.g., 1100 °C) leads to increased evaporation of the CuO_(x). Therefore, the effects of the CuOx-rich intergranular phase upon the dielectric properties are felt strongest in samples sintered at 1050 °C. Such effects are discussed in terms of microstructural variations due to liquid phase sintering behavior facilitated by the TiO_(2)-CuO_(x)-eutectic, which appearsto be melted at high sintering temperature prior to evaporation of CuO_(x) at prolonged dwell times at the highest sintering temperatures(1100 °C)
Nutritional assessment of newborn infants: current method limitations and new perspectives
CONCLUSÕES: Curvas de IMC para recém-nascidos representariam um complemento na avaliação nutricional neonatal e poderiam proporcionar melhor compreensão do padrão de crescimento intra-uterino e suas variações.OBJECTIVE: To review the literature regarding different approaches to the nutritional assessment of the newborn infant. DATA SOURCES: Retrieval of publications on nutritional assessment of newborn infants in Medline, SciELO and Lilacs, during the last ten years using as key-words "anthropometry" and "nutrition assessment". DATA SYNTHESIS: The nutritional assessment of the newborn infant is an important tool to diagnose and classify intrauterine growth alterations, and to ensure adequate follow up of growth and nutrition. The assessment includes anthropometric variables, biochemical parameters and body composition evaluation. Due to limitation of laboratorial and body composition methods, the neonatal nutritional assessment is still established by anthropometric variables such as weight, length, brachial and head circumference, and skinfolds. The anthropometric relationships are also useful to describe the body proportionality. Amongst these relations, the most cited are: mid-arm circumference and head circumference ratio and height by weight index. The body mass index (BMI) has been used to assess growth proportionality in children and adults, but there are not reference values for neonates. CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal BMI charts would represent a complement in the neonatal nutritional evaluation and could provide a better comprehension of intrauterine growth and its variations
Aim of the work was the production of dense Ti-45Nb material by hot-pressing of gas-atomized Ti-45Nb powder. Maximum compression strength and low Young’s modulus values were obtained by means of a tailored microstructure and improved interlinking of the powder particles. In a next step defined amounts of porosity were introduced by hot-pressing the alloy powder with a space holder phase. The produced porous structures should be used as bone substitute material in an osteoporotic bone defect. Compression is the dominating load in such a defect. Accordingly, compression tests were conducted to assess the mechanical properties.
The surface state of metallic bone replacement materials plays an important role regarding the osseointegration of the material into the surrounding bone tissue. A chemical and topographical modification of the surface is necessary to influence the equilibrium between the formation and resorption of bone on the interphase of implant and bone tissue. Especially in case of osteoporosis the stimulation bone formation is essential. Several studies have shown that strontium species have a positive effect on the formation of bone tissue and the inhibition of bone resorption. Therefore, a further aim of the work was the electrodeposition of Sr-containing hydroxyapatite layers and the structural, morphological and chemical characterization of the deposited layers. Furthermore, the release of Sr-species from the layers and the effect on hMSC (human mesenchymal stroma cells) were examined. Originating from studies on planar alloy surfaces, the transfer of the deposition approaches was shown in a proof of concept on the porous Ti-45Nb scaffolds
Challenging the Need for Transparency, Controllability, and Consistency in Usable Adaptation Design
Adaptive applications constitute the basis for many ubiquitous computing scenarios as they can dynamically adapt to changing contexts. The usability design principles transparency, controllability, and consistency have been recommended for the design of adaptive interfaces. However, designing self-adaptive applications that may act completely autonomous is still a challenging task because there is no set of usability design guidelines. Applying the three principles in the design of the five different adaptations of the mobile adaptive application Meet-U revealed as difficult. Based on an analysis of the design problem space, we elaborate an approach for the design of usable adaptations. Our approach is based on a notification design concept which calculates the attention costs and utility benefits of notified adaptations by varying the design aspects transparency and controllability. We present several designs for the adaptations of Meet‑U. The results of a user study shows that the notification design approach is beneficial for the design of adaptations. Varying transparency and controllability is necessary to adjust an adaptation’s design to the particular context of use. This leads to a partially inconsistent design for adaptations within an application

Polyelectrolyte complex based interfacial drug delivery system with controlled loading and improved release performance for bone therapeutics
An improved interfacial drug delivery system (DDS) based on polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) coatings with controlled drug loading and improved release performance was elaborated. The cationic homopolypeptide poly(l-lysine) (PLL) was complexed with a mixture of two cellulose sulfates (CS) of low and high degree of substitution, so that the CS and PLL solution have around equal molar charged units. As drugs the antibiotic rifampicin (RIF) and the bisphosphonate risedronate (RIS) were integrated. As an important advantage over previous PEC systems this one can be centrifuged, the supernatant discarded, the dense pellet phase (coacervate) separated, and again redispersed in fresh water phase. This behavior has three benefits: (i) Access to the loading capacity of the drug, since the concentration of the free drug can be measured by spectroscopy; (ii) lower initial burst and higher residual amount of drug due to removal of unbound drug and (iii) complete adhesive stability due to the removal of polyelectrolytes (PEL) excess component. It was found that the pH value and ionic strength strongly affected drug content and release of RIS and RIF. At the clinically relevant implant material (Ti40Nb) similar PEC adhesive and drug release properties compared to the model substrate were found. Unloaded PEC coatings at Ti40Nb showed a similar number and morphology of above cultivated human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) compared to uncoated Ti40Nb and resulted in considerable production of bone mineral. RIS loaded PEC coatings showed similar effects after 24 h but resulted in reduced number and unhealthy appearance of hMSC after 48 h due to cell toxicity of RIS
The Four Different Types of Internal Hernia Occurring After Laparascopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Performed for Morbid Obesity: Are There Any Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) Features Permitting Their Distinction?
Background: Four different types of internal hernias (IH) are known to occur after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGBP) performed for morbid obesity. We evaluate multidetector row helical computed tomography (MDCT) features for their differentiation. Methods: From a prospectively collected database including 349 patients with LRYGBP, 34 acutely symptomatic patients (28 women, mean age 32.6), operated on for IH immediately after undergoing MDCT, were selected. Surgery confirmed 4 (11.6%) patients with transmesocolic, 10 (29.4%) with Petersen's, 15 (44.2%) with mesojejunal, and 5 (14.8%) with jejunojejunal IH. In consensus, 2 radiologists analyzed 13 MDCT features to distinguish the four types of IH. Statistical significance was calculated (p < 0.05, Fisher's exact test, chi-square test). Results: MDCT features of small bowel obstruction (SBO) (n = 25, 73.5%), volvulus (n = 22, 64.7%), or a cluster of small bowel loops (SBL) (n = 27, 79.4%) were inconsistently present and overlapped between the four IH. The following features allowed for IH differentiation: left upper quadrant clustered small bowel loops (p < 0.0001) and a mesocolic hernial orifice (p = 0.0003) suggested transmesocolic IH. SBL abutting onto the left abdominal wall (p = 0.0021) and left abdominal shift of the superior mesenteric vessels (SMV) (p = 0.0045) suggested Petersen's hernia. The SMV predominantly shifted towards the right anterior abdominal wall in mesojejunal hernia (p = 0.0033). Location of the hernial orifice near the distal anastomosis (p = 0.0431) and jejunojejunal suture widening (p = 0.0005) indicated jejunojejunal hernia. Conclusions: None of the four IH seems associated with a higher risk of SBO. Certain MDCT features, such as the position of clustered SBL and hernial orifice, help distinguish between the four IH and may permit straightforward surger

Electrodeposition of Sr-substituted hydroxyapatite on low modulus beta-type Ti-45Nb and effect on in vitro Sr release and cell response
Beta-type Ti-based alloys are promising new materials for bone implants owing to their excellent mechanical biofunctionality and biocompatibility. For treatment of fractures in case of systemic diseases like osteoporosis the generation of implant surfaces which actively support the problematic bone healing is a most important aspect. This work aimed at developing suitable approaches for electrodeposition of Sr-substituted hydroxyapatite (Srx-HAp) coatings onto Ti-45Nb. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements in electrolytes with 1.67 mmol/L Ca(NO3)2, which was substituted by 0, 10, 50 and 100% Sr(NO3)2, and 1 mmol/L NH4H2PO4 at 333 K revealed the basic reaction steps for OH– and PO4 3− formation needed for the chemical precipitation of Srx-HAp. Studies under potentiostatic control confirmed that partial or complete substitution of Ca2+- by Sr2+-ions in solution has a significant effect on the complex reaction process. High Sr2+-ion contents yield intermediate phases and a subsequent growth of more refined Srx-HAp coatings. Upon galvanostatic pulse-deposition higher reaction rates are controlled and in all electrolytes very fine needle-like crystalline coatings are obtained. With XRD the incorporation of Sr-species in the hexagonal HAp lattice is evidenced. Coatings formed in electrolytes with 10 and 50% Sr-nitrate were chemically analyzed with EDX mapping and GD-OES depth profiling. Only a fraction of the Sr-ions in solution is incorporated into the Srx-HAp coatings. Therein, the Sr-distribution is laterally homogeneous but non-homogeneous along the cross-section. Increasing Sr-content retards the coating thickness growth. Most promising coatings formed in the electrolyte with 10% Sr-nitrate were employed for Ca, P and Sr release analysis in Tris-Buffered Saline (150 mM NaCl, pH 7.6) at 310 K. At a sample surface: solution volume ratio of 1:200, after 24 h the amount of released Sr-ions was about 30–35% of that determined in the deposited Srx-HAp coating. In vitro studies with human bone marrow stromal cells (hBMSC) revealed that the released Sr-ions led to a significantly enhanced cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation and that the Sr-HAp surface supported cell adhesion indicating its excellent cytocompatibility. © 2019 The Author
