B2C Advice on Complex Service Products via Video Calls: Explanations from Social Presence and Adaptive Structuration Theory

    Get PDF
At the beginning of the 21st century, most service companies maintain relationships with their customers without any face to face communication. Companies are increasingly looking for solutions to raise personal contact with their customers while keeping a high efficiency level. Social Presence means that people can feel like being together even when their conversation is technology-mediated. We build upon Adaptive Structuration Theory to explain under which conditions the highest levels of Social Presence can be achieved. Surveys and (field) experiments are combined (1) to develop a powerful measurement instrument for Social Presence, (2) to research in which situations technology-mediated communication is perceived to be the most “personal” and (3) whether Social Presence can account for higher levels of relationship building

Introduction of car sharing into existing car fleets in microscopic travel demand modelling

    Get PDF
Microscopic travel demand models take the characteristics of every individual person of the modelled population into account for computing the travel demand for the modelled region. Car sharing is an old concept, but the combination of a car sharing fleet parked in public space with smartphone services to find available cars nearby offers a new mobility service. It enables people to use a fleet operators cars by providing individual mobility on demand. However, integrating this mobility option into microscopic travel demand models still is a difficult task due to a lack of data. This paper shows an integrated approach to model car sharing as a new mode for transport within a travel demand model using disaggregated car fleets with car specific attributes. The necessary parameters for mode choice are estimated from various surveys and integrated into an existing multi nominal logit model. The proposed work is used to simulate the travel demand of a synthetic population for the German capital of Berlin. A comparison with the survey results shows that the proposed integration of car sharing meets the real-world data. Furthermore, it is shown that the mode choice reacts well for access restrictions for specific car segments and local accessibility influencing the trip lengths

Para além do dualismo natureza/cultura : ficções do corpo feminino

    Get PDF
This text probes into the legacy of a central dualism of western culture – nature vs. culture – to examine how the tropo of the “natural woman” constructed in the modern period bears upon the narrative logics of two representative European novels of the XIX century: Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Leon Tolstoi’s Ana Karenina. Then, it focuses on some scenes of Kate Chopin´s The awakening and Virgínia Woolf`s To the lighthouse to show to what extent the representation of the female characters’ experience of corporeality des-figure the dualisms upon which traditional cultural gender norms are predicated and, therefore, subvert the inscription of the body as the locus of the reproduction of femininity
