Record of Graduation Letter for Ada Gillett

    Get PDF
This letter from Linfield College registrar G.R. Schlauch to an unknown party (most likely Ada (Gillett) Rich) confirms her graduation from Linfield in 1920. The letter functions as a transcript, showing all classes taken, as well as how long the classes were, how many credits were earned per class, and the grade. Gillett graduated from Linfield with degrees in philosophy and music. This letter also served as a recommendation to any state Board of Education so she could apply for a teaching certificate.https://digitalcommons.linfield.edu/lca_rich/1003/thumbnail.jp

Focus on German-Speaking Countries/German Cultural Readers

In 1945, Hitler\u27s Third Reich, which had brought misery and suffering to millions of Europeans, was in shambles. German cities had been reduced to rubble, and her people were frightened, starving and desperate. Americans, together with their allies, occupied the defeated country. Wishing to prevent a recurrence of German aggressiveness, the Allies planned to punish the guilty and prevent Germany from ever becoming a military power again. Who would have thought at the time of the Nuremberg Trials that only thirty years later the western part of Germany would be one of the closest political and military allies and one of the strongest partners of the U.S.? Who would have imagined in 1945 that just a few years later millions of Americans would be attracted to Germany as tourists? Who would have anticipated at the end of the German catastrophe that part of Germany soon would be deeply affected by American culture and life style? Surprising as these developments may seem, they were only the most recent chapter in 200 years of German-American contact and influence

E-Tailing and Internet-Related Real Estate Cost Savings: A Comparative Analysis of E-tailers and Retailers

    Get PDF
This article explores differences in the corporate real estate strategies of traditional retailers and those of electronic retailers, or e-tailers. The primary issue addressed is whether e-tailing companies realize benefits of their non-retail, online operations, specifically in the form of lower real estate-related expense ratios when compared to traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. The study reveals three trends. First, the majority of retailers studied continue to focus their corporate real estate strategies in the retail space world. However, some companies are incorporating their online operations into their real estate strategies and are beginning to see lower real estate-related costs as a result. Second, there are differences among e-tailers in their real estate strategies as well as some indication of differences in the real estate-related costs associated with the strategy chosen. Third, e-tailers are not realizing real estate-related cost savings over their retailing competitors.

Hearing Conservation Program For Marching Band Members: A Risk For Noise-Induced Hearing Loss?

    Get PDF
Purpose: To examine the risk for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in university marching band members and to provide an overview of a hearing conservation program for a marching band. Method: Sound levels during band rehearsals were recorded and audiometric hearing thresholds and transient otoacoustic emission were measured over a 3-year period. Musician's earplugs and information about hearing loss were provided to the students. The hearing thresholds of other college students were tested as a partial control. Results: There were no significant differences in hearing thresholds between the two groups. During initial testing, more marching band members showed apparent high-frequency notches than control students. Follow-up hearing tests in a subsequent year for the marching band members showed that almost all notches disappeared. Persistent standard threshold shift (STS) across tests was not observed in the band members. Conclusion: Band members showed no evidence of STS or persistent notched audiograms. Because accepted procedures for measuring hearing showed a lack of precision in reliably detecting early NIHL in marching band members, it is recommended that signs of NIHL be sought in repeated measurements compared to baseline audiograms rather than in a single measure (a single notch). A hearing conservation program for this population is still recommended because of lengthy rehearsal times with high sound-level exposure during rehearsals.Communication Sciences and Disorder

Cofilin Activation in Peripheral CD4 T Cells of HIV-1 Infected Patients: A Pilot Study

    Get PDF
Cofilin is an actin-depolymerizing factor that regulates actin dynamics critical for T cell migration and T cell activation. In unstimulated resting CD4 T cells, cofilin exists largely as a phosphorylated inactive form. Previously, we demonstrated that during HIV-1 infection of resting CD4 T cells, the viral envelope-CXCR4 signaling activates cofilin to overcome the static cortical actin restriction. In this pilot study, we have extended this in vitro observation and examined cofilin phosphorylation in resting CD4 T cells purified from the peripheral blood of HIV-1-infected patients. Here, we report that the resting T cells from infected patients carry significantly higher levels of active cofilin, suggesting that these resting cells have been primed in vivo in cofilin activity to facilitate HIV-1 infection. HIV-1-mediated aberrant activation of cofilin may also lead to abnormalities in T cell migration and activation that could contribute to viral pathogenesis.Department of Defense (National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship); National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (AI069981

Software engineering initiative of DLR: Supporting small development teams in science and engineering

    Get PDF
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) conducts research and development in the domains aeronautics, space, energy, transport and security. Software development plays an increasing role in DLR`s research activities. Around 2000 to 3000 persons develop software - in part or full time. Typical development team sizes range from one up to 20 persons. To support such small development teams from different research domains and to establish basic quality of produced software are important challenges. For that reason, DLR started its software engineering initiative to improve sustainability and reproducibility of software products. In this talk, we provide an overview of DLR's software engineering initiative. We present the concept of establishing common guidelines with focus on small development teams, we explain supporting activities such as providing development tools and supporting knowledge exchange, and we report on encountered challenges and the current status. In the second part of the talk, we outline our ideas of establishing additional research domain specific guidelines. In this context, we discuss special requirements towards development of space products and the potential options to complement DLR`s guidelines like a space-specific extension of the ISO/IEC 29110 standard
