Access for all:: Telegraph Reformers and Visions of Use, 1865–1914

Der Telegraph entwickelte sich nie zu einem weltweit verbreiteten sozialen Instrument der Kommunikation zwischen Privatpersonen. Dieser Aufsatz porträtiert drei Reformer - Ernest Ayscoghe Floyer, John Henniker Heaton und Heinrich von Stephan - die diese Situation zu ändern antraten und argumentierten, dass der gesellschaftliche Gebrauch des Telegraphen erweitert werden sollte. Sie trafen auf der Konferenz der Internationalen Telegraphenunion in Berlin 885 zusammen. Das Ereignis hatte deutlich niedrigere Preise im europäischen Netz zur Folge, die auf einen Vorschlag von Stephans zurückgingen, der die Asymmetrien im Gebrauch des Telegraphen abbauen wollte. Dies scheint symptomatisch für ein allgemeineres Muster in der Entwicklung von Infrastrukturen, demzufolge europäische Arrangements als Zwischenschritt auf dem Weg zu globalen Lösungen angesehen wurden

Asymmetries of Transnational Telegraphy, 1855–1939:: Ideas, Materiality and the Use of the Telegram

Asymmetrie ist ein zentrales Konzept für das Verständnis der Rolle, die der Telegraph in der Geschichte der Globalisierung gespielt hat. Dieser Beitrag zeigt diese asymmetrische Entwicklung des globalen Telegraphennetzwerks und setzt sich mit einer allzu systemorientierten Sicht und einer weithin unkritischen Charakterisierung des Telegraphen als Motor der Globalisierung auseinander. Zwei Trends in der aktuellen Geschichtsschreibung sind dafür besonders ermutigend: Einerseits haben verschiedene Forscher begonnen, den scheinbar revolutionären Charakter des Telegraphen kritischer zu beurteilen, indem sie mehr Aufmerksamkeit auf die technologische Entwicklung vor dem Telegraphen und auf Kommunikationsstrategien, die parallel zu ihm entwickelt wurden, gelegt haben. Andererseits haben Untersuchungen des Telegraphen im imperialen Kontext die wechselseitige Abhängigkeit der imperialen Mächte unterstrichen und dabei Konflikte um die Ausweitung des Telegraphennetzwerkes in den Blick genommen. Die Einleitung zu diesem Themenheft schließt damit, dass sie Ideen, Materialität und Gebrauch als drei Perspektiven identifiziert, unter denen die Untersuchung der inhärenten Asymmetrien des globalen Telegraphennetzwerkes besonders fruchtbar erscheint

Current methods of diagnosis and treatment of scaphoid fractures

Fractures of the scaphoid bone mainly occur in young adults and constitute 2-7% of all fractures. The specific blood supply in combination with the demanding functional requirements can easily lead to disturbed fracture healing. Displaced scaphoid fractures are seen on radiographs. The diagnostic strategy of suspected scaphoid fractures, however, is surrounded by controversy. Bone scintigraphy, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography have their shortcomings. Early treatment leads to a better outcome. Scaphoid fractures can be treated conservatively and operatively. Proximal scaphoid fractures and displaced scaphoid fractures have a worse outcome and might be better off with an open or closed reduction and internal fixation. The incidence of scaphoid non-unions has been reported to be between 5 and 15%. Non-unions are mostly treated operatively by restoring the anatomy to avoid degenerative wrist arthritis

Antiviral responses are shaped by heterogeneity in viral replication dynamics

Antiviral signalling, which can be activated in host cells upon virus infection, restricts virus replication and communicates infection status to neighbouring cells. The antiviral response is heterogeneous, both quantitatively (efficiency of response activation) and qualitatively (transcribed antiviral gene set). To investigate the basis of this heterogeneity, we combined Virus Infection Real-time IMaging (VIRIM), a live-cell single-molecule imaging method, with real-time readouts of the dsRNA sensing pathway to analyse the response of human cells to encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) infection. We find that cell-to-cell heterogeneity in viral replication rates early in infection affect the efficiency of antiviral response activation, with lower replication rates leading to more antiviral response activation. Furthermore, we show that qualitatively distinct antiviral responses can be linked to the strength of the antiviral signalling pathway. Our analyses identify variation in early viral replication rates as an important parameter contributing to heterogeneity in antiviral response activation

Move and countermove: the integrated stress response in picorna- and coronavirus-infected cells

Viruses, when entering their host cells, are met by a fierce intracellular immune defense. One prominent antiviral pathway is the integrated stress response (ISR). Upon activation of the ISR - typically though not exclusively upon detection of dsRNA - translation-initiation factor eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2) becomes phosphorylated to act as an inhibitor of guanine nucleotide-exchange factor eIF2B. Thus, with the production of ternary complex blocked, a global translational arrest ensues. Successful virus replication hinges on effective countermeasures. Here, we review ISR antagonists and antagonistic mechanisms employed by picorna- and coronaviruses. Special attention will be given to a recently discovered class of viral antagonists that inhibit the ISR by targeting eIF2B, thereby allowing unabated translation initiation even at exceedingly high levels of phosphorylated eIF2

Jeugdsport draagt bij aan een groot aantal positieve aspecten waaronder gezondheid, zelfvertrouwen en sociale contacten. Dit gaat alleen niet vanzelf. Om de positieve aspecten van jeugdsport te vergroten en probleemgedrag te verminderen moet er een pedagogisch sportklimaat gecreëerd worden. Een pedagogisch sportklimaat is een sportklimaat waarbij het kind centraal staat. Daarnaast moet, vanuit een zorgzame en sociaal veilige basis, de focus liggen op plezier en op de persoonlijke en sociale ontwikkeling van het kind in en door de sport. Het doel van het Kids First, towards a pedagogical sport climate-project is het ontwerpen en invoeren van een hulpkader om dit pedagogisch sportklimaat op clubniveau te realiseren.
