Exploring Bs→Ds(∗)±K∓B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp Decays in the Presence of a Sizable Width Difference ΔΓs\Delta\Gamma_s

The Bs→Ds(∗)±K∓B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp decays allow a theoretically clean determination of ϕs+γ\phi_s+\gamma, where ϕs\phi_s is the Bs0B^0_s-Bˉs0\bar B^0_s mixing phase and γ\gamma the usual angle of the unitarity triangle. A sizable BsB_s decay width difference ΔΓs\Delta\Gamma_s was recently established, which leads to subtleties in analyses of the Bs→Ds(∗)±K∓B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp branching ratios but also offers new "untagged" observables, which do not require a distinction between initially present Bs0B^0_s or Bˉs0\bar B^0_s mesons. We clarify these effects and address recent measurements of the ratio of the Bs→Ds±K∓B_s\to D_s^\pm K^\mp, Bs→Ds±π∓B_s\to D_s^\pm\pi^\mp branching ratios. In anticipation of future LHCb analyses, we apply the SU(3) flavour symmetry of strong interactions to convert the BB-factory data for Bd→D(∗)±π∓B_d\to D^{(*)\pm}\pi^\mp, Bd→Ds±π∓B_d\to D_s^{\pm}\pi^\mp decays into predictions of the Bs→Ds(∗)±K∓B_s \to D_s^{(*)\pm} K^\mp observables, and discuss strategies for the extraction of ϕs+γ\phi_s+\gamma, with a special focus on untagged observables and the resolution of discrete ambiguities. Using our theoretical predictions as a guideline, we make simulations to estimate experimental sensitivities, and extrapolate to the end of the planned LHCb upgrade. We find that the interplay between the untagged observables, which are accessible thanks to the sizable ΔΓs\Delta\Gamma_s, and the mixing-induced CP asymmetries, which require tagging, will play the key role for the experimental determination of ϕs+γ\phi_s+\gamma.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, matches published versio

What blows in with the wind?

The shift toward renewable forms of energy for electricity generation in the electricity generation industry has clear implications for the spatial distribution of generating plant. Traditional forms of generation are typically located close to the load or population centers, while wind and solar-powered generation must be located where the energy source is found. In the case of wind, this has meant significant new investment in wind plant in primarily rural areas that have been in secular economic decline. This paper investigates the localized economic impacts of the rapid increase in wind power capacity at the county level in Texas. Unlike Input-Output impact analysis that relies primarily on levels of inputs to estimate gross impacts, we use traditional econometric methods to estimate net localized impacts in terms of employment, personal income, and property tax base. While we find evidence that both direct and indirect employment impacts are modest, significant increases in per capita income accompany wind power development. County and school property tax rolls also realize important benefits from the local siting of utility scale wind power

A Critical Study of North American Cestodes of the Genus \u3ci\u3eAndrya\u3c/i\u3e with Special Reference to \u3ci\u3eA. macrocephala\u3c/i\u3e Douthitt, 1915. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae)

Eight species of cestodes belonging to the genus Andrya Railliet, 1883, have been described from North American rodents. To the present time, 6 of these have been considered valid (A. primordialis Douthitt, 1915; A. macrocephala Douthitt, 1915; A. neotomae Voge, 1946; A. microti Hansen, 1947; A. sciuri Rausch, 1947; A. ondatrae Rausch, 1948). The genus Andrya was separated by Kirschenblatt (1938) into two subgenera, depending upon the presence or absence of a prostate gland. Of the North American species, only one (A. primordialis) possesses a prostate gland. Since we are concerned essentially with the other 5 closely-related species, A. primordialis is only briefly considered. The purpose of this paper is to present the data derived from a detailed study of morphological variation in certain of these cestodes, together with the resulting nomenclatural changes

Some Observations on Cestodes of the Genus \u3ci\u3eParanoplocephala\u3c/i\u3e Luehe, Parasitic in North American Voles (Microtus Spp.)

Although cestodes of the genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, 1910, are common parasites of voles and certain other rodents in North America, their taxonomic status to the present time has been much confused. It is the purpose of this paper to clarify the situation in regard to those species parasitic in voles of the genus Microtus Schrank. While certain of the cestodes considered here occur in hosts of other microtine genera, they are by far more abundant in the various species of Mi· crotus. At least two are also common in geomyid rodents. With the possible exception of Paranoplocephala brevis Kirschenblatt, 1938, discussed further below, none of the North American species has been recorded from Eurasian rodents

Mammals of the Katmai National Monument, Alaska

Contains a description of the area at the base of Alaska Peninsula, (approx. 1700 sq mi estab. in 1918, and subsequently extended), and of the field work. Records are given of 16 species collected and a similar number sighted. Occurrence and distribution, habitat and food, parasites, habits, etc., are discussed. Fieldwork was carried out by Schiller in summers 1953, 1954, and taxonomic work by Rausch, as part of a research program initiated by the U.S. Park Service

Hydatid Disease (Echinococcosis) in Alaska and the Importance of Rodent Intermediate Hosts

Hydatid disease, caused by the larval form of a tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786), is of circumpolar distribution, but has not previously been considered to be of much public health significance in North America. It is the purpose of this paper to present observations on this disease in Alaska, with special reference to its transmission to humans
