Low temperature dipolar echo in amorphous dielectrics: Significance of relaxation and decoherence free two level systems
The nature of dielectric echoes in amorphous solids at low temperatures is
investigated. It is shown that at long delay times the echo amplitude is
determined by a small subset of two level systems (TLS) having negligible
relaxation and decoherence because of their weak coupling to phonons. The echo
decay can then be described approximately by power law time dependencies with
different powers at times longer and shorter than the typical TLS relaxation
time. The theory is applied to recent measurements of two and three pulse
dipolar echo in borosilicate glass BK7 and provides a perfect data fit in the
broad time and temperature ranges under the assumption that there exist two TLS
relaxation mechanisms due to TLS-phonons and TLS-TLS interaction. This
interpretation is consistent with the previous experimental and theoretical
investigations. Further experiments verifying the theory predictions are
suggested.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Advances in SAW Gas Sensors Based on the Condensate-Adsorption Effect
A surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) gas sensor with a low detection limit and fast response for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) based on the condensate-adsorption effect detection is developed. In this sensor a gas chromatography (GC) column acts as the separator element and a dual-resonator oscillator acts as the detector element. Regarding the surface effective permittivity method, the response mechanism analysis, which relates the condensate-adsorption effect, is performed, leading to the sensor performance prediction prior to fabrication. New designs of SAW resonators, which act as feedback of the oscillator, are devised in order to decrease the insertion loss and to achieve single-mode control, resulting in superior frequency stability of the oscillator. Based on the new phase modulation approach, excellent short-term frequency stability (±3 Hz/s) is achieved with the SAW oscillator by using the 500 MHz dual-port resonator as feedback element. In a sensor experiment investigating formaldehyde detection, the implemented SAW gas sensor exhibits an excellent threshold detection limit as low as 0.38 pg
Far-infrared to millimeter astrophysical dust emission I: A model based on physical properties of amorphous solids
We propose a new description of astronomical dust emission in the spectral
region from the Far-Infrared to millimeter wavelengths.
Unlike previous classical models, this description explicitly incorporates
the effect of the disordered internal structure of amorphous dust grains. The
model is based on results from solid state physics, used to interpret
laboratory data. The model takes into account the effect of absorption by
Disordered Charge Distribution, as well as the effect of absorption by
localized Two Level Systems.
We review constraints on the various free parameters of the model from theory
and laboratory experimental data. We show that, for realistic values of the
free parameters, the shape of the emission spectrum will exhibit very broad
structures which shape will change with the temperature of dust grains in a non
trivial way. The spectral shape also depends upon the parameters describing the
internal structure of the grains. This opens new perspectives as to identifying
the nature of astronomical dust from the observed shape of the FIR/mm emission
spectrum. A companion paper will provide an explicit comparison of the model
with astronomical data.Comment: accepted in A&A, 21 pages, 9 figure

Influence of the preoperative oral adminstration of a carbohydrate-rich solution on the postoperative insulin consumption of cardiosurgical patients in the ASA-classes III-IV with non-insulin dependant diabetes mellitus
klinische Outcome (postoperative Komplikationen, Krankenhausverweildauer)
geprüft werden. Patienten undMethoden: Es wurden prospektiv, randomisiert und
placebokontrolliert 160 Patienten untersucht. Davon litten 31 Patienten an
Patients undergoing cardiac surgery often develop an overgoing postoperative
insulin resistance. This has a negative influence on morbidity an mortality.
Other studies have shown that the preoperative oral administration of
carbohydrate-rich oral solutions ameliorates the postoperative insulin
resistance. In 2003, this effect has neither been investigated on patients
undergoing cardiac surgery nor on patients with non-insulin dependant
diabetes. The aim of this study is to show whether the preoperative oral
adminstration of a carbohydrate-rich solution on patients with non-insulin
dependant diabetes undergoing cardiac surgery is able to decrease
postoperative insulin consumption. Secondary endpoints were the measurement of
the gastric residual volume and the clinical outcome of the patients. 160
patients were included, and 31 of these had non-insulin dependant diabetes.
The data of these 31 patients is presented in this dissertation. Patients were
randomized (double-blind) to three different study groups (verum, placebo and
traditional fasting). From induction of narcosis until 24 hours fter operation
the insulin consumption was measured and several clinical parameters were
documented. There was no significant difference of the postoperative insulin
consumption in between the three study groups (p=0,940). The gastric residual
volume was significantly higher in the traditional fastig group (p=0,025).
Other clinical parameters showed no further significant differences. Thus, the
intake of a carbohydrate-rich oral solution before cardiac surgery did not
show any influence on postoperative insulin consumption in patients of ASA-
classes III-IV with non-insulin dependant diabetes. The gastric residual
volume was not raised by drinking the solution. Other clinical parameters were
not influenced significantly either
Climate policy, stranded assets, and investors’ expectations
Climate policies to keep global warming below 2°C might render some of the world's fossil fuels and related infrastructure worthless prior to the end of their economic life time. Therefore, some energy-sector assets are at risk of becoming stranded. This paper investigates whether and how investors price in this risk of asset stranding. We exploit the gradual development of a German climate policy proposal aimed at reducing electricity production from coal and analyze its effect on the valuation of energy utilities. We find that investors take stranded asset risk into consideration, but that they also expect a financial compensation for their stranded assets
THERMOELASTIC AND RELAXATIONAL PROPERTIES OF DIELECTRIC AND METALLIC GLASSES AT LOW TEMPERATURE
We have investigated the low-temperature Grüneisen parameter and the long-time relaxational behaviour of the tunneling excitations in vitreous silica and in the metallic glass PdSiCu through the thermoelastic effect. In the case of a-SiO2, our data agree qualitatively with previous measurements of the thermal expansion, and relaxation times of up to 600 s have been detected. For PdSiCu a large relaxational contribution was found
COHERENT ELECTRIC ECHOES IN FUSED SILICA GLASS
