    Muon spin rotation and relaxation in the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe

    We report zero-field muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements on the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe. Weak itinerant ferromagnetic order is detected by a spontaneous muon spin precession frequency below the Curie temperature TC=3T_C = 3 K. The μ+\mu^+ precession frequency persists below the bulk superconducting transition temperature Tsc=0.5T_{sc} = 0.5 K, where it measures a local magnetic field Bloc=0.015B_{loc} = 0.015 T. The amplitude of the μ\muSR signal provides unambiguous proof for ferromagnetism present in the whole sample volume. We conclude ferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity on the microscopic scale.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PR

    Hierarchical distributed scenario-based model predictive control of interconnected microgrids

    Microgrids are autonomous clusters of generators, storage units and loads. Special requirements arise in interconnected operation: control schemes that do not require individual microgrids to disclose data about their internal structure and operating objectives are preferred for privacy reasons. Moreover, a safe and economically meaningful operation shall be achieved in presence of uncertain load and weather-dependent availability of renewable infeed. In this paper, we propose a distributed model predictive control approach that satisfies these requirements. Specifically, we demonstrate that costs and safety of supply can be improved through a scenario-based stochastic control scheme. In a numerical case study, our approach is compared to a certainty equivalence scheme. The results illustrate the improved safety and reduced runtime costs as well as sufficiently fast convergence

    Standard model plethystics

    We study the vacuum geometry prescribed by the gauge invariant operators of the minimal supersymmetric standard model via the plethystic program. This is achieved by using several tricks to perform the highly computationally challenging Molien-Weyl integral, from which we extract the Hilbert series, encoding the invariants of the geometry at all degrees. The fully refined Hilbert series is presented as the explicit sum of 1422 rational functions. We found a good choice of weights to unrefine the Hilbert series into a rational function of a single variable, from which we can read off the dimension and the degree of the vacuum moduli space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model gauge invariants.     A Systemic Review of the Frequency of Animal Leptospirosis in the Southern United States and the Implications for Human Health

    Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with symptoms in humans and animals, ranging from subclinical to serious and fatal. The disease occurs worldwide, but there is limited recognition of the public and animal health risks it poses in the southern United States. A systematic review of the frequency of animal leptospirosis in 17 states and jurisdictions covering the southern continental United States was performed to advance our understanding of the pathogen's distribution and identify transmission patterns that could be targeted for prevention efforts. Fifty-two articles, spanning >100 years, met the analysis criteria. A wide range of techniques were used to measure seroprevalence and isolate the bacteria. The assessment identified exposure to Leptospira spp and Leptospira spp infection among a diverse range of species, spanning 22 animal families within 14 states, suggesting that the pathogen is distributed throughout the southern region. Disease frequency trends were assessed among animals in various habitats (all habitats, nonwild habitats, and wild habitats). The frequency of Leptospira spp detection in animals in wild habitats increased slightly over time (<0.2%/year). We identified reports of 11 human leptospirosis illness clusters and outbreaks in the southern United States. Exposure to potentially contaminated surface waters were documented for at least seven of the events, and interactions with infected or likely infected animals were documented for at least six of the events. This analysis highlights the need for stronger partnerships across the public and animal health fields to enhance diagnostics, surveillance, and reporting. The early identification of leptospirosis in animals may serve as an indicator of environmental contamination and trigger prevention measures, such as vaccinating companion animals and livestock, use of potable water, and the wearing of waterproof protective clothing near water that may be contaminated

    Food Habits of Deer in the Black Hills

    This study was conducted in two parts for Master of Science theses by the senior authors of Parts I and II. The study in the Northem Black Hills (Part I) was completed in 1968. Principal and preferred foods were determined for the winter and summer and a pasture study was conducted to measure production and utilization of foods in a typical aspen stand during the summer months. The study in the Southern Black Hills (Part II) was made in 1968 and 1969. Objectives were to determine the principal plants used by mule and white-tailed deer in fall, winter and summer. The utility of the point-analysis technique for measuring rumen contents was evaluated and the technique was applied to rumen contents examined. The studies were supported by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks under Federal Aid Project W-75-R through the South Dakota Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit (South Dakota State University, the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks and the Wildlife Management Institute, cooperating). Special acknowledgement is extended to the personnel of the Wildlife Habitat Project, Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station Rapid City, for their assistance in both studies.     Lattice Distortion and Octupole Ordering Model in CexLa1-xB6

    Possible order parameters of the phase IV in CexLa1-xB6 are discussed with special attention to the lattice distortion recently observed. A \Gamma_{5u}-type octupole order with finite wave number is proposed as the origin of the distortion along the [111] direction. The \Gamma_8 crystalline electric field (CEF) level splits into three levels by a mean field with the \Gamma_{5u} symmetry. The ground and highest singlets have the same quadrupole moment, while the intermediate doublet has an opposite sign. It is shown that any collinear order of \Gamma_{5u}-type octupole moment accompanies the \Gamma_{5g}-type ferro-quadrupole order, and the coupling of the quadrupole moment with the lattice induces the distortion. The cusp in the magnetization at the phase transition is reproduced, but the internal magnetic field due to the octupole moment is smaller than the observed one by an order of magnitude.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J.     Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Hole-doped Ca2−x_{2-x}Nax_{x}CuO2_{2}Cl2_{2} Cuprate Superconductor

    We report on the magnetic phase diagram of a hole-doped cuprate Ca2−x_{2-x}Nax_{x}CuO2_{2}Cl2_{2}, which is free from buckling of CuO2_2 planes, determined by muon spin rotation and relaxation. It is characterized by a quasi-static spin glass-like phase over a range of sodium concentration (0.05≤x≤0.120.05\leq x\leq 0.12), which is held between long range antiferromagnetic (AF) phase (x≤0.02x\leq 0.02) and superconducting phase where the system is non-magnetic for x≥0.15x\geq 0.15. The obtained phase diagram qualitatively agrees well with that commonly found for hole-doped high-\tc cuprates, strongly suggesting that the incomplete suppression of the AF order for x>0.02x>0.02 is an essential feature of the hole-doped cuprates.Comment: 5 pages, submitted to Phys.     Macroscopic phase segregation in superconducting K0.73Fe1.67Se2 as seen by muon spin rotation and infrared spectroscopy

    Using muon spin rotation (\muSR) and infrared spectroscopy we investigated the recently discovered superconductor K0.73Fe1.67Se2 with Tc = 32 K. We show that the combined data can be consistently described in terms of a macroscopically phase segregated state with a matrix of ~88% volume fraction that is insulating and strongly magnetic and inclusions with a ~12% volume fraction which are metallic, superconducting and non-magnetic. The electronic properties of the latter, in terms of the normal state plasma frequency and the superconducting condensate density, appear to be similar as in other iron selenide or arsenide superconductors.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures.
