A unified framework for Schelling's model of segregation
Schelling's model of segregation is one of the first and most influential
models in the field of social simulation. There are many variations of the
model which have been proposed and simulated over the last forty years, though
the present state of the literature on the subject is somewhat fragmented and
lacking comprehensive analytical treatments. In this article a unified
mathematical framework for Schelling's model and its many variants is
developed. This methodology is useful in two regards: firstly, it provides a
tool with which to understand the differences observed between models;
secondly, phenomena which appear in several model variations may be understood
in more depth through analytic studies of simpler versions.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure
Towards More Accurate Molecular Dynamics Calculation of Thermal Conductivity. Case Study: GaN Bulk Crystals
Significant differences exist among literature for thermal conductivity of
various systems computed using molecular dynamics simulation. In some cases,
unphysical results, for example, negative thermal conductivity, have been
found. Using GaN as an example case and the direct non-equilibrium method,
extensive molecular dynamics simulations and Monte Carlo analysis of the
results have been carried out to quantify the uncertainty level of the
molecular dynamics methods and to identify the conditions that can yield
sufficiently accurate calculations of thermal conductivity. We found that the
errors of the calculations are mainly due to the statistical thermal
fluctuations. Extrapolating results to the limit of an infinite-size system
tend to magnify the errors and occasionally lead to unphysical results. The
error in bulk estimates can be reduced by performing longer time averages using
properly selected systems over a range of sample lengths. If the errors in the
conductivity estimates associated with each of the sample lengths are kept
below a certain threshold, the likelihood of obtaining unphysical bulk values
becomes insignificant. Using a Monte-Carlo approach developed here, we have
determined the probability distributions for the bulk thermal conductivities
obtained using the direct method. We also have observed a nonlinear effect that
can become a source of significant errors. For the extremely accurate results
presented here, we predict a [0001] GaN thermal conductivity of 185 at 300 K, 102 at 500 K, and 74
at 800 K. Using the insights obtained in the work, we have achieved a
corresponding error level (standard deviation) for the bulk (infinite sample
length) GaN thermal conductivity of less than 10 , 5 , and 15 at 300 K, 500 K, and 800 K respectively
Residential segregation and cultural dissemination: An Axelrod-Schelling model
In the Axelrod's model of cultural dissemination, we consider mobility of
cultural agents through the introduction of a density of empty sites and the
possibility that agents in a dissimilar neighborhood can move to them if their
mean cultural similarity with the neighborhood is below some threshold. While
for low values of the density of empty sites the mobility enhances the
convergence to a global culture, for high enough values of it the dynamics can
lead to the coexistence of disconnected domains of different cultures. In this
regime, the increase of initial cultural diversity paradoxically increases the
convergence to a dominant culture. Further increase of diversity leads to
fragmentation of the dominant culture into domains, forever changing in shape
and number, as an effect of the never ending eroding activity of cultural
minorities
Clinical manifestations of human brucellosis : a systematic review and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND: The objectives of this systematic review, commissioned by WHO, were to assess the frequency and severity of clinical manifestations of human brucellosis, in view of specifying a disability weight for a DALY calculation. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Thirty three databases were searched, with 2,385 articles published between January 1990-June 2010 identified as relating to human brucellosis. Fifty-seven studies were of sufficient quality for data extraction. Pooled proportions of cases with specific clinical manifestations were stratified by age category and sex and analysed using generalized linear mixed models. Data relating to duration of illness and risk factors were also extracted. Severe complications of brucellosis infection were not rare, with 1 case of endocarditis and 4 neurological cases per 100 patients. One in 10 men suffered from epididymo-orchitis. Debilitating conditions such as arthralgia, myalgia and back pain affected around half of the patients (65%, 47% and 45%, respectively). Given that 78% patients had fever, brucellosis poses a diagnostic challenge in malaria-endemic areas. Significant delays in appropriate diagnosis and treatment were the result of health service inadequacies and socioeconomic factors. Based on disability weights from the 2004 Global Burden of Disease Study, a disability weight of 0.150 is proposed as the first informed estimate for chronic, localised brucellosis and 0.190 for acute brucellosis. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review adds to the understanding of the global burden of brucellosis, one of the most common zoonoses worldwide. The severe, debilitating, and chronic impact of brucellosis is highlighted. Well designed epidemiological studies from regions lacking in data would allow a more complete understanding of the clinical manifestations of disease and exposure risks, and provide further evidence for policy-makers. Nonequilibrium phase transition in the coevolution of networks and opinions
Models of the convergence of opinion in social systems have been the subject
of a considerable amount of recent attention in the physics literature. These
models divide into two classes, those in which individuals form their beliefs
based on the opinions of their neighbors in a social network of personal
acquaintances, and those in which, conversely, network connections form between
individuals of similar beliefs. While both of these processes can give rise to
realistic levels of agreement between acquaintances, practical experience
suggests that opinion formation in the real world is not a result of one
process or the other, but a combination of the two. Here we present a simple
model of this combination, with a single parameter controlling the balance of
the two processes. We find that the model undergoes a continuous phase
transition as this parameter is varied, from a regime in which opinions are
arbitrarily diverse to one in which most individuals hold the same opinion. We

Enhanced Anandamide Plasma Levels in Patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome following Traumatic Injury: A Preliminary Report
The complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a disabling neuropathic pain condition that may develop following injuries of the extremities. The pathogenesis of this syndrome is not clear; however, it includes complex interactions between the nervous and the immune system resulting in chronic inflammation, pain and trophic changes. This interaction may be mediated by chronic stress which is thought to activate the endogenous cannabinoid (endocannabinoid) system (ECS). We conducted an open, prospective, comparative clinical study to determine plasma level of the endocannabinoid anandamide by high-performance liquid chromatography and a tandem mass spectrometry system in 10 patients with CRPS type I versus 10 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. As compared to healthy controls, CRPS patients showed significantly higher plasma concentrations of anandamide. These results indicate that the peripheral ECS is activated in CRPS. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the role of the ECS in the limitation of inflammation and pain. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Base
Improvement of lung preservation - From experiment to clinical practice
Background. Reperfusion injury represents a severe early complication following lung transplantation. Among the pathogenetic factors, the high potassium content of Euro-Collins(R) solution is discussed. Material and Methods: In a pig model of orthotopic left-sided lung transplantation we investigated the effect of Euro-Collins solution (EC: n=6) versus low potassium dextran (LPD: Perfadex(R): n = 6). Sham-operated (n = 6) animals served as control. Transplant function, cellular energy metabolism and endothelial morphology served as parameters. In a clinical investigation, 124 patients were evaluated following single (EC: n = 31; LPD n = 37) or double (EC: n = 17; LPD n = 39) lung transplantation, whose organs where preserved with EC (n = 48) or LPD (n = 76). Duration of ischemia, duration of ventilation and stay on ICU were registered. Primary transplant function was evaluated according to AaDO(2) values. Cause of early death (30 days) was declared. Results: Experimental results: After flush with EC and 18 h ischemia, a reduction of tissue ATP content (p < 0.01 vs inital value and LPD) was noted. Endothelial damage after ischemia was severe (p < 0.05 vs control), paO(2) was significantly decreased. Clinical results: In the LPD group, duration of ischemia was longer for the grafts transplanted first (SLTx and DLTx: p = 0.0009) as well as second (2. organ DLTx: p = 0.045). Primary transplant function was improved (day 0: SLTx: p = 0.0015; DLTx: p = 0.0095, both vs EC). Duration of ventilation and stay on ICU were shorter (n.s.). Reperfusion injury-associated death was reduced from 8% (EC) to 0 (LPD). Conclusion: In experimental lung preservation, LPD lead to an improved graft function. These results were confirmed in clinical lung transplantation. Clinical lung preservation, therefore, should be carried out by use of LPD. Copyright (C) 2002 S. Karger AG, Basel
The older dockworker : evaluation and follow-up of a screening program
In 1974 Blackburn wrote: "The present state of progress in cardiovascular
epidemiology includes the overriding demonstration that there are vast
differences in the frequency of coronary heart disease (CHD) among
populations and that the risk of the diseases varies enormously according to the
burden of individual or population risk characteristics .... The thrust will
surely continue towards quantitative rather than qualitative assessment of
CHD risk and a preventive approach to its management. The practitioner will
no longer regard the multiple mild and moderate risk factors and bad habits as
trivialities, but as powerful combined elements of risk requiring effective
action ... Prevention is still the word; it should now be given its balanced
share of effort which, I hope we can now agree, involves more than just lip
service". These and other statements can be found in a detailed literature
review given in chapter II.
In order to provide more than just "lip service" in 1971 at the Occupational
Health Service for the Port of Rotterdam a standardized screening effort was
undertaken to investigate the prevalence of CVD among dockworkers between
the ages of 55 and 65. The results of the first screening have been published by
Baart in 1973. A second screening in the same group of dockworkers was
carried out between October 1972 and November 1973. In addition the
possibilities of intervention in individuals with abnormal findings were to be
explored. These investigations provide the basis for this thesis.
A total of 503 persons studied at screening I were invited to participate in
screening II. Four hundred and fortyseven of them appeared. The screening
consisted of various items of the medical history obtained by means of a
standardized questionnaire, the determination of height, weight, blood
pressure, a resting· and an exercise-electrocardiogram, a chest roentgenogram
and the determination of serum cholesterol, total lipids, blood sedimentation
rate as well as data on ventilatory functions. The methodology and patient
material is described in chapter III and in various annexes. The follow-up study
provided not only data on the prevalence of risk indicators at two different
times but it also gave the opportunity to evaluate the consistency of the testing
procedures employed during t
Effective Free Energy for Individual Dynamics
Physics and economics are two disciplines that share the common challenge of
linking microscopic and macroscopic behaviors. However, while physics is based
on collective dynamics, economics is based on individual choices. This
conceptual difference is one of the main obstacles one has to overcome in order
to characterize analytically economic models. In this paper, we build both on
statistical mechanics and the game theory notion of Potential Function to
introduce a rigorous generalization of the physicist's free energy, which
includes individual dynamics. Our approach paves the way to analytical
treatments of a wide range of socio-economic models and might bring new
insights into them. As first examples, we derive solutions for a congestion
