    Global citizenship in public discourse

    Get PDF
The ideas presented in this essay come from my ongoing research into how the term ‘global citizenship’ has been interpreted and communicated beyond academic debates in political philosophy and the social sciences. During the past five years, I have built up two databases: a database of public statements regarding global citizenship, largely from a variety of news sources around the world, and transcripts from interviews that I have completed with more that 150 individuals associated with these public statements. By using public communication of the term ‘global citizenship’ as the starting point for analysis, my research strategy is different from many other contributions to the rapidly expanding literature regarding prospects for an international dimension of citizenship

Deploying the Idea of Solidarity in the Formation of an East Asian Community

This paper examines prospects for solidarity as a unifying idea that can inspire and promote steps toward regional political community across East Asia. Just as the European Union’s founders and its past and present visionaries have appealed consistently to an inclusive, transnational model of solidarity in framing and pursuing European integration, notions of solidarity also contain important affinities with prospects for building an East Asian community. First, the paper examines how the idea of solidarity has evolved in European political thought and especially how solidarity has emerged repeatedly as a central concept in the political development of the European Union. Then, the paper turns to East Asia and considers the relevance of solidarity as an important principle in aspirations and endeavors toward the creation of an East Asian community. We base our analysis upon a variety of sources, including statements and speeches from key political actors, scholarly books and articles, and newspaper editorials and commentaries. In contrast with interpretations that suggest the conditions for developing East Asian community are inescapably distinct from the circumstances in Europe during the second half of the 20th century, we argue that the idea of solidarity has great potential to advance regional collaboration and integration in East Asia

Toward an incremental pathway to peace on the Korean Peninsula

For more about the East-West Center, see http://www.eastwestcenter.org/One possible way to address the North Korean nuclear threat is by beginning a series of incremental steps to gradually lessen tension and lead to eventual peace on the Korean Peninsula. Such steps could include halting North Korea's nuclear-weapons testing and further advancement of its nuclear-weapons program in return for scaling back joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea; reducing North Korea's nuclear stockpiles in exchange for special development aid to North Korea for targeted economic, social, and public health initiatives; a moratorium on North Korean missile testing in exchange for the suspension of United States missile-defense systems in South Korea, and, providing earlier steps were successful, a peace treaty ending the Korean War. Recognizing what it would take for these initiatives to emerge requires also reckoning with the inevitable obstacles

Education for global citizenship: Illustrations of ideological pluralism and adaptation

This article explores the ideological currents emerging within the contested idea of global citizenship in public discourse by focusing on how this term has been deployed within the educational arena. In educational initiatives across the English-speaking world, \u27global citizenship\u27 is aligned with four ideological constellations: Moral cosmopolitanism, liberal multiculturalism, neoliberalism and environmentalism. Identifying and examining some of the more prominent strains of thinking within educational programs for global citizenship contributes to ongoing debates about whether a new, distinct and globally-oriented ideology might be emerging. This article maintains that public discourse related to global citizenship in education does not yet validate a prospective ideology such as \u27globalism\u27 but does illustrate how established ideologies, most notably liberalism in its plural forms, are adapting alongside increasing public recognition of global interdependence
