A technologist view of the next decade evolution of the librarian work environment

    No full text
The work environment has deeply evolved in recent decades with the generalisation of IT in terms of hardware, online resources and software. Librarians do not escape this movement and their working environment is becoming essentially digital (databases, online publications, Wikis, specialised software, etc.). With the Big Data era, new tools will be available, implementing artificial intelligence, text mining, machine learning, etc. Most of these technologies already exist but they will become widespread and strongly impact our ways of working. The development of social networks that are "business" oriented will also have an increasing influence. In this context, it is interesting to reflect on how the work environment of librarians will evolve. Maintaining interest in the daily work is fundamental and over-automation is not desirable. It is imperative to keep the human-driven factor. We draw on state of the art new technologies which impact their work, and initiate a discussion about how to integrate them while preserving their expertise

|| Answering biological questions frequently requires multiple queries through various sources disseminated on the web. The context of the work presented here is integration of heterogeneous data sources taking into account specificities of biological sourc

XML-based applications for accessing and sharing natural language resources

Colloque sans acte Ă  diffusion restreinte. internationale.International audienceWe shall present some general xml-based applications that we have developed in the aim of accessing and sharing natural language resources in opened client/server environments. The presentation will be organized as follows : First, we introduce the idea of a General Distributed Software Architecture. Second, we describe the general framework in which this architecture may be used. Third, we present some projects which are currently using, even partially, this kind of architecture

Toward Binding Database Interfaces with Scientific Papers

Despite a large variety of facilities helping to either select or manipulate data from Web interfaces, it remains diffcult to provide users with relevant scientific or technical annotations for those data. Introducing such content by hand into a Web interface is a tedious job with a risk of providing in complete or inadequate content. To overcome this diffculty, we are exploring the possibility of using the names of exposed quantities to index a text corpus. This index can be used to show the most relevant text snippets in a given context. The full text can be displayed by user request and automatically scroll down to that snippet. Our approach is based on the conversion of PDF papers into machinereadable files that are indexed by a search engine. Index entries are reported as PDF annotations that are used to control the display. This workflow has been tested on the IVOA standard corpus as a proof of concept. It has then been applied to the XMM-Newtonuser guides for our catalog interface. Finally, it has been adapted to find resources within portals exposing a lot of various data collections

TWiki : A collaborative space of internal documentation, an efficient way to work together

    No full text
<p>The documentalists at Strasbourg astronomical Data Center treat publications to create content for the SIMBAD and VizieR databases. The publication treatment is quite complex and the ingestion process needs to be described. This requires precise knowledge and mutual support among the documentalists in interaction with computer engineers and astronomers. Documentalists at CDS have thought of an adapted way to organize and enrich their internal documentation. The “TWiki” collaborative space, recently reorganized and enriched, regroups documents about agreed-upon procedures and methods, directions for use of the software and tools, shared problems/solutions. It is a tool for sharing, preserving and enriching the common knowledge of the whole staff.</p
