Multi-speckle diffusing wave spectroscopy with a single mode detection scheme
We present a detection scheme for diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) based on
a two cell geometry that allows efficient ensemble averaging. This is achieved
by putting a fast rotating diffuser in the optical path between laser and
sample. We show that the recorded (multi-speckle) correlation echoes provide an
ensemble averaged signal that does not require additional time averaging. We
find the performance of our experimental scheme comparable or even superior to
camera based multi-speckle techniques that rely on direct spatial averaging.
Furthermore, combined with traditional two-cell DWS, the full intensity
autocorrelation function can be measured with a single experimental setup
covering more than 10 decades in correlation time.Comment: Submitted to PR
Multiangle static and dynamic light scattering in the intermediate scattering angle range
We describe a light scattering apparatus based on a novel optical scheme
covering the scattering angle range 0.5\dg \le \theta \le 25\dg, an
intermediate regime at the frontier between wide angle and small angle setups
that is difficult to access by existing instruments. Our apparatus uses
standard, readily available optomechanical components. Thanks to the use of a
charge-coupled device detector, both static and dynamic light scattering can be
performed simultaneously at several scattering angles. We demonstrate the
capabilities of our apparatus by measuring the scattering profile of a variety
of samples and the Brownian dynamics of a dilute colloidal suspension
Enhanced structural correlations accelerate diffusion in charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions
Theoretical calculations for colloidal charge-stabilized and hard sphere
suspensions show that hydrodynamic interactions yield a qualitatively different
particle concentration dependence of the short-time self-diffusion coefficient.
The effect, however, is numerically small and hardly accessible by conventional
light scattering experiments. Applying multiple-scattering decorrelation
equipment and a careful data analysis we show that the theoretical prediction
for charged particles is in agreement with our experimental results from
aqueous polystyrene latex suspensions.Comment: 1 ps-file (MS-Word), 14 page
Homogeneous nucleation of colloidal melts under the influence of shearing fields
We study the effect of shear flow on homogeneous crystal nucleation, using
Brownian Dynamics simulations in combination with an umbrella sampling like
technique. The symmetry breaking due to shear results in anisotropic radial
distribution functions. The homogeneous shear rate suppresses crystal
nucleation and leads to an increase of the size of the critical nucleus. These
observations can be described by a simple, phenomenological extension of
classical nucleation theory. In addition, we find that nuclei have a
preferential orientation with respect to the direction of shear. On average the
longest dimension of a nucleus is along the vorticity direction, while the
shortest dimension is preferably perpendicular to that and slightly tilted with
respect to the gradient direction.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to J. Phys.: Condens. Matte
Detector dead-time effects and paralyzability in high-speed quantum key distribution
Recent advances in quantum key distribution (QKD) have given rise to systems
that operate at transmission periods significantly shorter than the dead times
of their component single-photon detectors. As systems continue to increase in
transmission rate, security concerns associated with detector dead times can
limit the production rate of sifted bits. We present a model of high-speed QKD
in this limit that identifies an optimum transmission rate for a system with
given link loss and detector response characteristics
Search for Doubly-Charged Higgs Boson Production at HERA
A search for the single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons H^{\pm \pm}
in ep collisions is presented. The signal is searched for via the Higgs decays
into a high mass pair of same charge leptons, one of them being an electron.
The analysis uses up to 118 pb^{-1} of ep data collected by the H1 experiment
at HERA. No evidence for doubly-charged Higgs production is observed and mass
dependent upper limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings h_{el} of the Higgs
boson to an electron-lepton pair. Assuming that the doubly-charged Higgs only
decays into an electron and a muon via a coupling of electromagnetic strength
h_{e \mu} = \sqrt{4 \pi \alpha_{em}} = 0.3, a lower limit of 141 GeV on the
H^{\pm\pm} mass is obtained at the 95% confidence level. For a doubly-charged
Higgs decaying only into an electron and a tau and a coupling h_{e\tau} = 0.3,
masses below 112 GeV are ruled out.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Accelerator mass spectrometry measurements of the 13C(n,Îł)14C and 14N(n,p)14C cross sections
The technique of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), offering a complementary tool for sensitive studies of key reactions in nuclear astrophysics, was applied for measurements of the C13(n,Îł)C14 and the N14(n,p)C14 cross sections, which act as a neutron poison in s-process nucleosynthesis. Solid samples were irradiated at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with neutrons closely resembling a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution for kT=25 keV, and also at higher energies between En=123 and 182Â keV. After neutron irradiation the produced amount of C14 in the samples was measured by AMS at the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA) facility. For both reactions the present results provide important improvements compared to previous experimental data, which were strongly discordant in the astrophysically relevant energy range and missing for the comparably strong resonances above 100 keV. For C13(n,Îł) we find a four times smaller cross section around kT=25 keV than a previous measurement. For N14(n,p), the present data suggest two times lower cross sections between 100 and 200 keV than had been obtained in previous experiments and data evaluations. The effect of the new stellar cross sections on the s process in low-mass asymptotic giant branch stars was studied for stellar models of 2Mâ initial mass, and solar and 1/10th solar metallicity
