Quantum fluctuations in the open universe
We solve a continuing controversy when dealing with density fluctuations in open Friedman-Robertson-Walker universes, on the physical relevance of a class of exponential modes. We show explicitly and rigorously that these modes enter the expansion of quantum fields. In the maximally symmetric de Sitter case, encountered in inflationary models, they are excited for fields with mass below a critical value. They are seen to be responsible for the breaking of the de Sitter symmetry for a massless field. We provide an exact calculation of the power spectrum for any mass. Our method is free of the divergences that appear in earlier treatments. We extend the construction to a generic open FRW universe
Granular Flows in a Rotating Drum: the Scaling Law between Velocity and Thickness of the Flow
The flow of dry granular material in a half-filled rotating drum is studied.
The thickness of the flowing zone is measured for several rotation speeds, drum
sizes and beads sizes (size ratio between drum and beads ranging from 47 to
7400). Varying the rotation speed, a scaling law linking mean velocity vs
thickness of the flow, , is deduced for each couple (beads, drum).
The obtained exponent is not always equal to 1, value previously reported
in a drum, but varies with the geometry of the system. For small size ratios,
exponents higher than 1 are obtained due to a saturation of the flowing zone
thickness. The exponent of the power law decreases with the size ratio, leading
to exponents lower than 1 for high size ratios. These exponents imply that the
velocity gradient of a dry granular flow in a rotating drum is not constant.
More fundamentally, these results show that the flow of a granular material in
a rotating drum is very sensible to the geometry, and that the deduction of the
``rheology'' of a granular medium flowing in such a geometry is not obvious
Magnetic ground state and magnon-phonon interaction in multiferroic h-YMnO
Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to study the magneto-elastic
excitations in the multiferroic manganite hexagonal YMnO. An avoided
crossing is found between magnon and phonon modes close to the Brillouin zone
boundary in the -plane. Neutron polarization analysis reveals that this
mode has mixed magnon-phonon character. An external magnetic field along the
-axis is observed to cause a linear field-induced splitting of one of the
spin wave branches. A theoretical description is performed, using a Heisenberg
model of localized spins, acoustic phonon modes and a magneto-elastic coupling
via the single-ion magnetostriction. The model quantitatively reproduces the
dispersion and intensities of all modes in the full Brillouin zone, describes
the observed magnon-phonon hybridized modes, and quantifies the magneto-elastic
coupling. The combined information, including the field-induced magnon
splitting, allows us to exclude several of the earlier proposed models and
point to the correct magnetic ground state symmetry, and provides an effective
dynamic model relevant for the multiferroic hexagonal manganites.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

On Budget-Feasible Mechanism Design for Symmetric Submodular Objectives
We study a class of procurement auctions with a budget constraint, where an
auctioneer is interested in buying resources or services from a set of agents.
Ideally, the auctioneer would like to select a subset of the resources so as to
maximize his valuation function, without exceeding a given budget. As the
resources are owned by strategic agents however, our overall goal is to design
mechanisms that are truthful, budget-feasible, and obtain a good approximation
to the optimal value. Budget-feasibility creates additional challenges, making
several approaches inapplicable in this setting. Previous results on
budget-feasible mechanisms have considered mostly monotone valuation functions.
In this work, we mainly focus on symmetric submodular valuations, a prominent
class of non-monotone submodular functions that includes cut functions. We
begin first with a purely algorithmic result, obtaining a
-approximation for maximizing symmetric submodular functions
under a budget constraint. We view this as a standalone result of independent
interest, as it is the best known factor achieved by a deterministic algorithm.
We then proceed to propose truthful, budget feasible mechanisms (both
deterministic and randomized), paying particular attention on the Budgeted Max
Cut problem. Our results significantly improve the known approximation ratios
for these objectives, while establishing polynomial running time for cases
where only exponential mechanisms were known. At the heart of our approach lies
an appropriate combination of local search algorithms with results for monotone
submodular valuations, applied to the derived local optima.Comment: A conference version appears in WINE 201
Chaos and Complexity of quantum motion
The problem of characterizing complexity of quantum dynamics - in particular
of locally interacting chains of quantum particles - will be reviewed and
discussed from several different perspectives: (i) stability of motion against
external perturbations and decoherence, (ii) efficiency of quantum simulation
in terms of classical computation and entanglement production in operator
spaces, (iii) quantum transport, relaxation to equilibrium and quantum mixing,
and (iv) computation of quantum dynamical entropies. Discussions of all these
criteria will be confronted with the established criteria of integrability or
quantum chaos, and sometimes quite surprising conclusions are found. Some
conjectures and interesting open problems in ergodic theory of the quantum many
problem are suggested.Comment: 45 pages, 22 figures, final version, at press in J. Phys. A, special

Temperature Dependence of \eta and \eta^{\prime} Masses
We investigate the temperature dependence of \eta and \eta^{\prime} masses
due to scatterings from thermal pions in a heat bath using the non-linear sigma
model. We show that mass shifts of \eta and \eta^{\prime} and the shift in the
mixing angle are negligible.Comment: Latex, 11 pages, 2 eps figures include
