poster abstractBackground: Prior studies correlated birth weight with child IQ. Maternal IQ correlates with IQ in her offspring. Birth weight predicted IQ in monozygotic twins dicordant for birth weight. IUGR alters global DNA methylation. IQ in mother may be a biological marker for her child's rate of intrauterine growth (birth weight). Objective: Does maternal IQ predict her child's intrauterine growth rate (birth weight)? Design/Methods: Births from 1970-2004 using NLSY '79 database were studied Primary variables were children's IQ score from most recent Peabody Picture Vocabulary Revised Form L test and birth weight in grams. Maternal IQ was estimated from AirForce Qualifying test (AFQT)and categorized as 75, 50-74, 25-49 and <25%ile resp. Race, economic status, singleton, gestation, use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs were used as covariates. Multivariate models were used to assess associations of Children's IQ and birth weight with maternal IQ levels controlling for other covariates. Results: 9,125 children were analyzed. 98.3% singleton, 12.3% preterm, and 51.2% male. Means Std's of birth weight and IQ score were 3,307 597 grams and 38 30.4 respectively.Of the total 4,121 mothers, 25.7% were blacks, 18.3% were Hispanics and 54.0% were non Hispanic non blacks(nHnB). The mean std of the AFQT was 36.9 28.1. Proportions of IQs were 13.6%, 17.2%, 27.2% and 42% from low to high IQs respectively among mothers. Multivariate models showed children's IQ scores were related to their mother's IQ ,birth weight, race/ethnicity, and economic status. In particular, the mean children's IQ scores were 28.1, 37.1, 46.8, and 55 at mother's IQ levels from low to high respectively (p-values<0.001). Children's IQs was increased by 0.14 0.06 (slope) for every 100 gram increase in birth weight (p=0.013). Children's birth weights were positively associated with their mothers' IQ. Means birth weight increased from 3,334 grams to 3,465 grams as mothers' IQ rose from low to high (p<0.001). When sub-populations stratified by race/ethnicity were analyzed, positive relationships between childs IQ and mother's IQ were found in all Hispanic, black and nHnB groups (p's<0.001); while the positive relationship between birth weight and mother's IQ levels was found significant only in the nHnB (white) group (p<0.001). The findings held even after preterm and non singleton births were excluded from analysis. Conclusions: Child's IQ correlates with birth weight and maternal IQ. Maternal IQ may also predict birth weight of offspring

Abstract Introduction Intensive care unit (ICU) admission for bone marrow transplant recipients immediately following transplantation is an ominous event, yet the survival of these patients with subsequent ICU admissions is unknown. Our objective was to determine the long-term outcome of bone marrow transplant recipients admitted to an ICU during subsequent hospitalizations. Methods We conducted a population-based cohort analysis of all adult bone marrow transplant recipients who received subsequent ICU care in Ontario, Canada from 1 January 1992 to 31 March 2002. The primary endpoint was mortality at 1 year. Results A total of 2,653 patients received bone marrow transplantation; 504 of which received ICU care during a subsequent hospitalization. Patients receiving any major procedure during their ICU stay had higher 1-year mortality than those patients who received no ICU procedure (87% versus 44%, P < 0.0001). Death rates at 1 year were highest for those receiving mechanical ventilation (87%), pulmonary artery catheterization (91%), or hemodialysis (94%). In combination, the strongest independent predictors of death at 1 year were mechanical ventilation (odds ratio, 7.4; 95% confidence interval, 4.8 to 11.4) and hemodialysis (odds ratio, 8.7; 95% confidence interval, 2.1 to 36.7), yet no combination of procedures uniformly predicted 100% mortality. Conclusion The prognosis of bone marrow transplant recipients receiving ICU care during subsequent hospitalizations is very poor but should not be considered futile

Re-engineering NASA's space communications to remain viable in a constrained fiscal environment

Along with the Red and Blue Teams commissioned by the NASA Administrator in 1992, NASA's Associate Administrator for Space Communications commissioned a Blue Team to review the Office of Space Communications (Code O) Core Program and determine how the program could be conducted faster, better, and cheaper. Since there was no corresponding Red Team for the Code O Blue Team, the Blue Team assumed a Red Team independent attitude and challenged the status quo, including current work processes, functional distinctions, interfaces, and information flow, as well as traditional management and system development practices. The Blue Team's unconstrained, non-parochial, and imaginative look at NASA's space communications program produced a simplified representation of the space communications infrastructure that transcends organizational and functional boundaries, in addition to existing systems and facilities. Further, the Blue Team adapted the 'faster, better, cheaper' charter to be relevant to the multi-mission, continuous nature of the space communications program and to serve as a gauge for improving customer services concurrent with achieving more efficient operations and infrastructure life cycle economies. This simplified representation, together with the adapted metrics, offers a future view and process model for reengineering NASA's space communications to remain viable in a constrained fiscal environment. Code O remains firm in its commitment to improve productivity, effectiveness, and efficiency. In October 1992, the Associate Administrator reconstituted the Blue Team as the Code O Success Team (COST) to serve as a catalyst for change. In this paper, the COST presents the chronicle and significance of the simplified representation and adapted metrics, and their application during the FY 1993-1994 activities

Background The immunological escape of tumors represents one of the main ob- stacles to the treatment of malignancies. The blockade of PD-1 or CTLA-4 receptors represented a milestone in the history of immunotherapy. However, immune checkpoint inhibitors seem to be effective in specific cohorts of patients. It has been proposed that their efficacy relies on the presence of an immunological response. Thus, we hypothesized that disruption of the PD-L1/PD-1 axis would synergize with our oncolytic vaccine platform PeptiCRAd. Methods We used murine B16OVA in vivo tumor models and flow cytometry analysis to investigate the immunological background. Results First, we found that high-burden B16OVA tumors were refractory to combination immunotherapy. However, with a more aggressive schedule, tumors with a lower burden were more susceptible to the combination of PeptiCRAd and PD-L1 blockade. The therapy signifi- cantly increased the median survival of mice (Fig. 7). Interestingly, the reduced growth of contralaterally injected B16F10 cells sug- gested the presence of a long lasting immunological memory also against non-targeted antigens. Concerning the functional state of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), we found that all the immune therapies would enhance the percentage of activated (PD-1pos TIM- 3neg) T lymphocytes and reduce the amount of exhausted (PD-1pos TIM-3pos) cells compared to placebo. As expected, we found that PeptiCRAd monotherapy could increase the number of antigen spe- cific CD8+ T cells compared to other treatments. However, only the combination with PD-L1 blockade could significantly increase the ra- tio between activated and exhausted pentamer positive cells (p= 0.0058), suggesting that by disrupting the PD-1/PD-L1 axis we could decrease the amount of dysfunctional antigen specific T cells. We ob- served that the anatomical location deeply influenced the state of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes. In fact, TIM-3 expression was in- creased by 2 fold on TILs compared to splenic and lymphoid T cells. In the CD8+ compartment, the expression of PD-1 on the surface seemed to be restricted to the tumor micro-environment, while CD4 + T cells had a high expression of PD-1 also in lymphoid organs. Interestingly, we found that the levels of PD-1 were significantly higher on CD8+ T cells than on CD4+ T cells into the tumor micro- environment (p < 0.0001). Conclusions In conclusion, we demonstrated that the efficacy of immune check- point inhibitors might be strongly enhanced by their combination with cancer vaccines. PeptiCRAd was able to increase the number of antigen-specific T cells and PD-L1 blockade prevented their exhaus- tion, resulting in long-lasting immunological memory and increased median survival

The Debye theta for both KI and LiF had been measured over a wide range of temperatures, but as yet there was no clear indication that the theta as a function of T had leveled off. There was also no certain estimate of the value that theta would assume near T = 0. The present experiment was set up to find these values. Moreover, the findings were to be used to verify determinations of the theta by other means, and thereby help to tie together more tightly an extensive body of theory. Further, just such measurements as these are needed to shed light on recent attempts to extend the simple Debye theory
