The essay analyses the exhibition “Bisca Vascalleri”, by the Italian artist Nico Vascellari, held in Rome during Winter 2018 that will be re-launched in an itinerant format in 2019. A Roman project space run by laria Marotta and Andrea Baccin (Cura Basement) has been transformed for a month into a gambling house, where people can participate in games invented by the artist, testing one’s skills, imagination, willing to take risks and, generally, try one’s luck. With a few chips and limited expenditure, all gamblers have a chance to win a work by Vascellari. The “Bisca” has triggered both amusement and reflections on the topics of gambling, participatory creativity, alternative art markets and the value of original artwor

Intra-guild spatial niche overlap among three small falcon species in an area of recent sympatry

Climate warming and land-use change are reshuffling the distribution of wild organisms on a global scale. Some species may expand their ranges and colonize new regions, which may greatly affect ecological interactions among pre-existing species and colonizers. In the last decades, such processes have originated a unique condition of sympatry among three Eurasian small Falco species (common kestrel F. tinnunculus, lesser kestrel F. naumanni, red-footed falcon F. vespertinus) in the intensively cultivated farmland habitats of the Po Plain (Northern Italy). This provides an excellent opportunity to investigate patterns of spatial niche overlap during the initial phases of the establishment of sympatry. To investigate spatial niche overlap of the three falcon species, we relied on Environmental Niche Models (ENMs) based on widespread breeding occurrence data obtained through field surveys and citizen science programs (during the 2018-2020 period). ENMs were based on bioclimatic and land-use variables in an ensemble modelling framework. We estimated species-specific relative contributions of each climatic and land-use variable and its response curves effect. Eventually, we generated spatial correlation maps of the potential species' distributions to derive spatially-explicit predictions of potential co-occurrence areas among the three species. Overall, eco-climatic determinants of the distribution of lesser kestrel and red-footed falcon were similar, resulting in a strong association with intensive arable lands and dry continental climate. Consistently, we found a high spatial correlation between the suitability maps of the two species, with highly suitable areas located in the Central-Eastern area of the Po Plain, corresponding to the core range of both species. Conversely, the common kestrel emerged as a habitat generalist and was widely distributed throughout the Po Plain. Our findings suggest that the recent sympatry between lesser kestrels and red-footed falcons in the Po Plain may promote ecological interactions and intra-guild competition

Adolescence represents a vulnerable developmental period for depression and an opportune time for prevention efforts. In this study, 186 adolescents with elevated depressive symptoms (M age = 14.01, SD = 1.22; 66.7% female; 32.2% racial minority) were randomized to receive either Interpersonal Psychotherapy–Adolescent Skills Training (IPT-AST; n = 95) delivered by research clinicians or group counseling (GC; n = 91) delivered by school counselors. We previously reported the short-term outcomes of this school-based randomized controlled trial: IPT-AST youth experienced significantly greater improvements in depressive symptoms and overall functioning through 6-month follow-up. Here, we present the long-term outcomes through 24 months postintervention. We examined differences in rates of change in depressive symptoms and overall functioning and differences in rates of depression diagnoses. Youth in both conditions showed significant improvements in depressive symptoms and overall functioning from baseline to 24-month follow-up, demonstrating the efficacy of school-based depression prevention programs. However, the two groups did not differ in overall rates of change or in rates of depression diagnoses from baseline to 24-month follow-up. Although IPT-AST demonstrated advantages over GC in the short term, these effects dissipated over long-term follow-up. Specifically, from 6- to 24-month follow-up, GC youth showed continued decreases in depressive symptoms, whereas IPT-AST youth showed a nonsignificant increase in symptoms. GC youth remained relatively stable in overall functioning, whereas IPT-AST youth experienced a small but statistically significant worsening in functioning. This study highlights the potential of school-based depression prevention efforts and the need for further research

The geological heritage of Tuscany is one of the most varied, studied and history-rich (from the industrial and scientific stand point) of italy, represent- ing an area of active research and educational training not only for Tuscan Universities but also for other italian and foreign academic institutions. Since the 90’s of last century, Tuscany changed its economic strategy from mining-directed to mainly touristic, starting a more careful management of the environment and landscape. Backfilling of former quarries, stabilization of road cuts and closure of underground works in mining areas represent a correct environmental practice but in turn it precludes the access at important geological outcrops of high scientific and educational interest. The creation of parks for the protection of the rich Tuscan natural, historical and archaeological heritage is an opportunity to develop syn- ergies between conservation institutions and the community of Earth scientists aimed to the identification, preservation and improvement of geosites of special scientific and edu- cational value. The collaboration between the Parchi Val di Cornia S.p.a, University of Pisa and CNR allowed recovering and development of a Tuscan geosite of great interest, the «Coquand Section»: a 20 meter large amphitheater where the type-section of a Cu-Fe-Pb-zn sulfide bearing skarn body is exposed (exploited in the past by the Temperino mine; now in the archaeological and Mining Park of San Silvestro). The detailed topographic and geological survey provided new data for the reconstruction of the complex genetic history of this magmatic-hydrothermal system. Comparison with the numer- ous scientific papers published since the early nineteenth cen- tury on this geological outcrop allows to follow the evolution of scientific thought about relationships between magmatism, release of hydrothermal fluids and metasomatic processes

Maurizio Calvesi’s adolescence, that coincides with the years of World War II, shows a youthful passion for the group of Futurist “aeropoeti”, and an attraction for the riddle that saw him publish charades, anagrams, rebuses in specialized magazines, signing with cultured and suggestive pseudonyms. An early sign of an “undoubted attraction for the enigma” and for the hidden meanings of the artworks, this germinal interest would have led him to choose for his subsequent research artists and works with a high enigmatic nature (from Piranesi to de Chirico to Duchamp to the so-called Anachronism), and to trace illuminating correspondences between the Renaissance hermetic culture and the transformations of languages in contemporary art. The youthful “ludi enigmatici”, although soon overcome, continue their work: he himself proposes, for example, to consider Marcel Duchamp’s enigmisms as “gymnastics of language”, suggesting that his works present a first and second reading to decipher. A stage on this path is represented by the essay A noir (Melencolia I), published in the first issue of the magazine “Storia dell’arte”, in 1969, where the famous engraving by Dürer is intended as the initial moment of the alchemical opus. From the Renaissance to the present, art emerges as a transmutation process of languages, materials, techniques, readings and interpretations, under the sign of transformation and recombination
