Social indicators for evaluating sustainability of goat livestock farms: methodological approach
Currently, sustainability is an objective for any
economic activity or development process. Many
studies with theoretical reflections relating to the
concept of sustainability exist, but few methodological
contributions adequately quantify and evaluate the
level of sustainability of agraricultural systems,
specifically with respect to small ruminant. The level
of sustainability of these systems should be estimated
taking into account not only economic and
environmental aspects, but also social ones. Despite its
importance to the functioning of agraricultural
systems, the social dimension has been little
addressed, and is frequently ignored in studies of this
nature. Then, the objective of this study is to carry out
methodological reflections based on identification and
quantification of social indicators applied to goat
livestock farms. Furthermore, this study forms part of
a broader comparative study on sustainable
development of animal systems in Andalusia (Spain)
and Chiapas (Mexico), in which economic,
environmental, and social indicators are used in an
integrated manner. The methodology used to obtain
indicators is based on the authors´ knowledge of the
functioning of goat livestock systems, focus groups
and opinions of experts in the field, and revision of the
available bibliography. As a result of the study, we
propose a group of indicators made up of several
variables based on the logical-mathematical principals
of different scales of measurement as well as on
multicriteria analysis. The social indicators proposed
refer to several themes: i) multi-functionality; ii)
membership in professional associations; iii)
implication for local life; iv) social well-being (quality
of life, especially that related to work); and v)
continuity of the goats livestock activity
Impacts of erosion on the sustainability of organic olive groves: a case study (Estepa Region, Southwestern Spain)
Spain has more than 2.5 M ha of olive groves, with 60% of this area (i.e., 1.5 M ha) concentrated in the region of Andalusia (Southern Spain). Assuming the socio-ecological characteristics of these crops, of which their contribution to ecosystemic services (ES) is fundamental for society, it is highly relevant to direct their management towards practices that guarantee their durability. Organic management of olive groves constitutes a multifunctional model that contributes to ensuring its sustainability and represents 2.4–3.5% of the olive grove area in Spain. Taking the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Estepa (Southwestern Spain) as a study model, where organic olive groves are novel, a study of the impacts of erosion on the economic, social, and environmental factors associated with this management was carried out in addition to estimating its impacts. The results showed how organic management promotes edaphic fertility, keeping the levels of diffuse pollution under the legislative limits. Although the increase in erosion has negative effects on the sustainability/durability of agricultural holdings, organic management consolidates a sustainable model that satisfies farmers’ demands. Therefore, organic farming is a model that focuses on the correct use of natural resources associated with the geographical region of study, and contributes to increasing the sustainability of olive groves
Recicland, demostration on the management of organic and inorganic waste from agriculture
However, greenhouse area exponential growth has led to an increase in the volume of agricultural waste. In addition, this agricultural system is evolving towards new cultivation techniques that not only involve the generation of waste, but also a greater diversification that makes its management hard to tackle. The main issue regarding management of this agricultural waste is not only its geographical dispersion, but also its seasonality, as a large quantity is generated during certain periods of the year, coinciding with the end of agricultural campaigns. Indeed, the maximum collection and storage capacity and the management process itself are conditioned by the volume generated at the end of cropping cycles. In this context, the RECICLAND project arises, which aims to alleviate these problems and contribute to the sustainable management of the waste generated in the production processes. Specifically, the general objective of project is to develop pilot demonstration activities, providing practical information on different techniques for the specific management of inorganic waste and plant debris. For this purpose, a recycling area has been set up, where transference activities such as practical workshops, guide visits, demonstration, videos, and publications are being carried out in IFAPA La Mojonera (Almería)
Inorganic Waste Management in Greenhouse Agriculture in Almeria (SE Spain): Towards a Circular System in Intensive Horticultural Production
The concept of circular economy, whose model is based on three main pillars: (i) design out waste and pollution; (ii) keep products and materials in use; and (iii) regenerate natural systems, has recently been applied to different sectors. This concept is directly related to bioeconomy. Spain implemented its own strategy in bioeconomy in 2016, affecting all economic activities, agriculture included. In line with this, one of the most important agricultural sectors is the greenhouse horticulture of Almería (SE Spain). This region has experienced deep changes in the last 40 years, and has become one of the most efficient agro-industrial complexes in the world. This rapid growth has brought sustainability problems such as pollution, water overuse, or inadequate waste management. Several studies have undertaken organic waste reuse or minimization, but an important lack of knowledge exists regarding the inorganic fraction. One of the goals of the REINWASTE project is to find solutions for this problem. Therefore, an extensive legal framework has been consulted and an in-depth study of the steps in greenhouse production with the associated residues has been carried out. Additionally, information from experts and stakeholders has been registered, resulting a list of Best Available Technologies (BATs) to prevent and minimize inorganic waste generation. This article highlights the intensive greenhouse horticulture from Almería efforts to reach circularity by closing the loop with inorganic waste
Healthy Vending for Fresh Mini Vegetable Consumption of Young and School Cosumers
The mini vegetables also called "snack" began to be cultivated in Spain as an alternative of diversification and a development strategy for horticultural sector value chain. Although they still occupy a small market share, these vegetables could generate potential market niches to obtain greater added value to the products and to increase their profitability. This work analyzes the market possibilities of these new snacks varieties as cucumber, pepper and tomato, trying to adapt the offer not only to the conventional and usual channels of the vegetable large distribution and point sales, but also to address other new marketing channels as well as new formats, range and product packaging. In this framework, to search for niche market potential and to socialize more the consumption of these types of vegetables in crude, this research analyzes the attitudes and opinions of young consumers towards the consumption and willingness to purchase of these snacks through vending machines "healthy vending".
Short channels for organic vegetables in Almería and Granada. Analysis of experiences in marketing
