Arbuscular-mycorhizal fungi (AMF) from melon plants grown in Van province, were studied by nested-PCR method to establish colonization ratio of related fungi in plants and to detect the fungi at species level. From 10 different locations, a total of 100 soil samples were taken from rhizosphere area of melon plants. It was also determined that 52% of these plants were colonized by arbuscular-mycorhizal fungi and were able to establish symbiotic relationship in variable ranges (4.5 to 37.8%) Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae were two identified AMF.Key words: Arbuscular-mycorhizal fungi (AMF), melon, Glomus intraradices, Glomus mosseae, Van

Can proximal femoral nailing of unstable trochanteric fractures help to regain pre-injury functional status in Indian rural patients? A prospective study of functional outcome of unstable intertrochanteric fractures with proximal femoral nailing

Background: In view of the high incidence of implant failure and varus collapse seen in unstable inter trochanteric femur fractures treated with dynamic hip screw (DHS), proximal femoral nailing (PFN) has gained popularity.1,2 However there is limited literature regarding functional outcome following PFN especially in Indian patients. In this study, our aim was to assess functional outcome following PFN of unstable inter trochanteric femur fractures which includes the ability to sit cross leg and squat. Methods: This prospective observational study was done at the associated hospitals of KMC Mangalore, spanning a time period of around 2 years, from October 2014 to July 2016. All patients who presented with isolated closed unstable inter-trochanteric fractures were included in the study. Patients were treated with proximal femoral nailing and followed up for a minimum period of 6 months. Outcome measures included Harris hip score, walking status and ability to sit cross leg and squat. Results: 40 consecutive patients (Mean age 61 years, range 25-95) were included in the study, all fractures united within 6 months. As per Harris hip score, 25 patients (62.5%) had excellent or good results, 8 patients (20%) had fair and 7 patients (17.5%) had poor results. 74% (20 out of 27) regained their gainful working status. 80% (24 out of 30) were able to squat easily  or with some  difficulty and 74% (20 out of 27) patients were able to sit crossed leg with or without difficulty. 82% (23 out of 28) regained their unassisted walking status. Conclusions: For unstable inter trochanteric femur fracture PFN gives good results in terms of union, walking ability and majority of the patients regained their pre injury activity status including squatting and cross leg sitting.

R.A.Fisher, design theory, and the Indian connection

Design Theory, a branch of mathematics, was born out of the experimental statistics research of the population geneticist R. A. Fisher and of Indian mathematical statisticians in the 1930s. The field combines elements of combinatorics, finite projective geometries, Latin squares, and a variety of further mathematical structures, brought together in surprising ways. This essay will present these structures and ideas as well as how the field came together, in itself an interesting story.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

A Comparison Study of Ranibizumab and Aflibercept in Patients with Naive Diabetic Macular Edema in Presence of Serous Retinal Detachment

Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of intravitreal injection of Aflibercept and Ranibizumab in the treatment of naive diabetic macular edema (DME) with serous retinal detachment (SRD). Materials and methods: In this prospective, non-randomized-cohort study, 60 eyes with DME with SRD were divided into 2 groups: group 1 consisted of 30 eyes treated with intravitreal injection of 0.5 mg/0.1 mL Ranibizumab (IVR) and group 2 consisted of 30 eyes treated with intravitreal injection of 2 mg/0.05 mL Aflibercept (IVA). After three sequential injections with 30–40-day interval as a loading dose, all patients were followed up for 12 months. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), SRD’s height (SRDH) and the number of reinjections of the drugs were compared. Results: The groups were similar in terms of age and sex (p > 0.05). There was no difference between groups in terms of the baseline BCVA, CMT and SRDH (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between groups with regard to BCVA and CMT values for 12 months (p > 0.05). SRDH decreased significantly in both groups; however, the reduction of SRDH was considerably higher in group 2 for 12 months (p < 0.05). The mean number of reinjection was 4.40 ± 0.85 in group 1 and 3.16 ± 0.75 in group 2 and it was noticeably lower in group 2 (p < 0.001). The number of cases with persistent SRD at the end of the study was 14 (46.6%) in group 1 and 5 (16.6%) in group 2 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Aflibercept may treat SRD more efficiently in patients with DME compared to Ranibizumab with fewer injections. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

    Polygalacturonase activity of Aspergilli

    1. Three strains of Aspergilli having good PG activity were isolated. 2. The conditions for maximum elaboration of PG were studied using synthetic liquid media as well as wheat bran. (i) The enzyme content was maximum after 4 days of growth; pH below 5 favoured the formation of enzyme. (ii) Wheat bran was a better substrate than synthetic liquid media; aqueous glycerine was very satisfactory for extraction of the enzyme from wheat bran medium. 3. Partially purified PG preparations were obtained by precipitating enzyme at 60 per cent. concentration of ammonium sulphate after discarding the precipitate at 20 per cent. salt concentration; alcohol inactivated the enzyme to a great extent. 4. The optimum pH for activity with citrus pectin as substrate was about 4-5; hydrolysis was rapid during first 12-24 hours and decreased thereafter during a further 8-10 days period
