Transmission overhaul estimates for partial and full replacement at repair
Timely transmission overhauls increase in-flight service reliability greater than the calculated design reliabilities of the individual aircraft transmission components. Although necessary for aircraft safety, transmission overhauls contribute significantly to aircraft expense. Predictions of a transmission's maintenance needs at the design stage should enable the development of more cost effective and reliable transmissions in the future. The frequency is estimated of overhaul along with the number of transmissions or components needed to support the overhaul schedule. Two methods based on the two parameter Weibull statistical distribution for component life are used to estimate the time between transmission overhauls. These methods predict transmission lives for maintenance schedules which repair the transmission with a complete system replacement or repair only failed components of the transmission. Transmission overhaul and replacement predictions using Weibull and renewel theory
A method to estimate the frequency of transmission overhauls is presented. This method is based on the two-parameter Weibull statistical distribution for component life. A second method is presented to estimate the number of replacement components needed to support the transmission overhaul pattern. The second method is based on renewal theory. Confidence statistics are applied with both methods to improve the statistical estimate of sample behavior. A transmission example is also presented to illustrate the use of the methods. Low lift-to-drag aero-assisted orbit transfer vehicles
The results of systems analysis conducted on low life drag ratio (L/D) aero-assisted orbit transfer vehicle (AOTV's) are presented. The objectives for this class of vehicle and formulate technology development plans and funding levels to bring the required technologies to readiness levels, as well as develop a credible decision data base encompassing the entire range of low L/D concepts for use in future NASA Aeroassist Orbit Transfer Vehicles studies. Each candidate low L/D concept, the aerobrake, the lifting brake, and the aeromaneuvering concept could be made to work with technologies achievable by the early 1990's. All concepts require flexible structure with flexible thermal protection system (TPS) to be successfully integrated into the shuttle orbiter for launch, all required improvements in guidance and control to fly the dispersed atmospheres at high altitude, and all concepts had potential to evolve from ground-based to space-based operations
Gear mesh compliance modeling
A computer model has been constructed to simulate the compliance and load sharing in a spur gear mesh. The model adds the effect of rim deflections to previously developed state-of-the-art gear tooth deflection models. The effects of deflections on mesh compliance and load sharing are examined. The model can treat gear meshes composed to two external gears or an external gear driving an internal gear. The model includes deflection contributions from the bending and shear in the teeth, the Hertzian contact deformations, and primary and secondary rotations of the gear rims. The model shows that rimmed gears increase mesh compliance and, in some cases, improve load sharing
Flash ionization of the partially ionized wind of the progenitor of SN 1987A
The H II region created by the progenitor of SN 1987A was further heated and
ionized by the supernova flash. Prior to the flash, the temperature of the gas
was 4000 - 5000 K, and helium was neutral, while the post-flash temperature was
only slightly less than 10^5 K, with the gas being ionized to helium-like
ionization stages of C, N and O. We have followed the slow post-flash cooling
and recombination of the gas, as well as its line emission, and find that the
strongest lines are N V 1240 and O VI 1034. Both these lines are good probes
for the density of the gas, and suitable instruments to detect the lines are
STIS on HST and FUSE, respectively. Other lines which may be detectable are N
IV] 1486 and [O III] 5007, though they are expected to be substantially weaker.
The relative strength of the oxygen lines is found to be a good tracer of the
color temperature of the supernova flash. From previous observations, we put
limits on the hydrogen density, n_H, of the H II region. The early N V 1240
flux measured by IUE gives an upper limit which is n_H ~ 180 \eta^{-0.40}
cm^{-3}, where \eta is the filling factor of the gas. The recently reported
emission in [O III] 5007 at 2500 days requires n_H = (160\pm12) \eta^{-0.19}
cm^{-3}, for a supernova burst similar to that in the 500full1 model of Ensman
& Burrows (1992). For the more energetic 500full2 burst the density is n_H =
(215\pm15) \eta^{-0.19} cm^{-3}. These values are much higher than in models of
the X-ray emission from the supernova (n_H ~ 75 cm^{-3}), and it seems
plausible that the observed [O III] emission is produced primarily elsewhere
than in the H II region. We also discuss the type of progenitor consistent with
the H II region. In particular, it seems unlikely that its spectral type was

Clouds, photolysis and regional tropospheric ozone budgets.
We use a three-dimensional chemical transport model to examine the shortwave radiative effects of clouds on the tropospheric ozone budget. In addition to looking at changes in global concentrations as previous studies have done, we examine changes in ozone chemical production and loss caused by clouds and how these vary in different parts of the troposphere. On a global scale, we find that clouds have a modest effect on ozone chemistry, but on a regional scale their role is much more significant, with the size of the response dependent on the region. The largest averaged changes in chemical budgets (±10–14%) are found in the marine troposphere, where cloud optical depths are high. We demonstrate that cloud effects are small on average in the middle troposphere because this is a transition region between reduction and enhancement in photolysis rates. We show that increases in boundary layer ozone due to clouds are driven by large-scale changes in downward ozone transport from higher in the troposphere rather than by decreases in in-situ ozone chemical loss rates. Increases in upper tropospheric ozone are caused by higher production rates due to backscattering of radiation and consequent increases in photolysis rates, mainly J(NO2). The global radiative effect of clouds on isoprene, through decreases of OH in the lower troposphere, is stronger than on ozone. Tropospheric isoprene lifetime increases by 7% when taking clouds into account. We compare the importance of clouds in contributing to uncertainties in the global ozone budget with the role of other radiatively-important factors. The budget is most sensitive to the overhead ozone column, while surface albedo and clouds have smaller effects. However, uncertainty in representing the spatial distribution of clouds may lead to a large sensitivity of the ozone budget components on regional scales
Low-Altitude Reconnection Inflow-Outflow Observations during a 2010 November 3 Solar Eruption
For a solar flare occurring on 2010 November 3, we present observations using
several SDO/AIA extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) passbands of an erupting flux rope
followed by inflows sweeping into a current sheet region. The inflows are soon
followed by outflows appearing to originate from near the termination point of
the inflowing motion - an observation in line with standard magnetic
reconnection models. We measure average inflow plane-of-sky speeds to range
from ~150-690 km/s with the initial, high-temperature inflows being the
fastest. Using the inflow speeds and a range of Alfven speeds, we estimate the
Alfvenic Mach number which appears to decrease with time. We also provide
inflow and outflow times with respect to RHESSI count rates and find that the
fast, high-temperature inflows occur simultaneously with a peak in the RHESSI
thermal lightcurve. Five candidate inflow-outflow pairs are identified with no
more than a minute delay between detections. The inflow speeds of these pairs
are measured to be 10^2 km/s with outflow speeds ranging from 10^2-10^3 km/s -
indicating acceleration during the reconnection process. The fastest of these
outflows are in the form of apparently traveling density enhancements along the
legs of the loops rather than the loop apexes themselves. These flows could
either be accelerated plasma, shocks, or waves prompted by reconnection. The
measurements presented here show an order of magnitude difference between the
retraction speeds of the loops and the speed of the density enhancements within

Variation in oil, nitrogen and methionine level in Lupinus mutabilis
Paper presented at the 5th International Lupin Conference, Poznań, Poland, July 5-8, 1988.Seed of 61 introduced genotypes of Lupinus mutabilis was screened for nitrogen, methionine and oil. There was marked variation among the characteristics in the genotypes screened. This suggests the possibility of selecting for increased levels of all three factors. There was a significant positive (P < 0.001) relationship between seed nitrogen and methionine
Student experiences of virtual reality - a case study in learning special relativity
We present a study of student learning through the use of virtual reality. A
software package is used to introduce concepts of special relativity to
students in a game-like environment where users experience the effects of
travelling at near light speeds. From this new perspective, space and time are
significantly different to that experienced in everyday life. The study
explores how students have worked with this environment and how these students
have used this experience in their study of special relativity. A mixed method
approach has been taken to evaluate the outcomes of separate implementations of
the package at two universities. Students found the simulation to be a positive
learning experience and described the subject area as being less abstract after
its use. Also, students were more capable of correctly answering concept
questions relating to special relativity, and a small but measurable
improvement was observed in the final exam
