Evaluation of the angiotensin II receptor blocker azilsartan medoxomil in African-American patients with hypertension
The efficacy and safety of azilsartan medoxomil (AZL-M) were evaluated in African-American patients with hypertension in a 6-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, for which the primary end point was change from baseline in 24-hour mean systolic blood pressure (BP). There were 413 patients, with a mean age of 52years, 57% women, and baseline 24-hour BP of 146/91mmHg. Treatment differences in 24-hour systolic BP between AZL-M 40mg and placebo (-5.0mmHg; 95% confidence interval, -8.0 to -2.0) and AZL-M 80mg and placebo (-7.8mmHg; 95% confidence interval, -10.7 to -4.9) were significant (P.001 vs placebo for both comparisons). Changes in the clinic BPs were similar to the ambulatory BP results. Incidence rates of adverse events were comparable among the treatment groups, including those of a serious nature. In African-American patients with hypertension, AZL-M significantly reduced ambulatory and clinic BPs in a dose-dependent manner and was well tolerated
Hydrodynamics of polar liquid crystals
Starting from a microscopic definition of an alignment vector proportional to
the polarization, we discuss the hydrodynamics of polar liquid crystals with
local -symmetry. The free energy for polar liquid crystals
differs from that of nematic liquid crystals () in that it
contains terms violating the symmetry. First we show
that these -odd terms induce a general splay instability of a
uniform polarized state in a range of parameters. Next we use the general
Poisson-bracket formalism to derive the hydrodynamic equations of the system in
the polarized state. The structure of the linear hydrodynamic modes confirms
the existence of the splay instability.Comment: 9 pages, corrected typos, added references, revised content, to

Overscreening and Underscreening in Solid-Electrolyte Grain Boundary Space-Charge Layers
Polycrystalline solids can exhibit material properties that differ
significantly from those of equivalent single-crystal samples, in part, because
of a spontaneous redistribution of mobile point defects into so-called
space-charge regions adjacent to grain boundaries. The general analytical form
of these space-charge regions is known only in the dilute limit, where
defect-defect correlations can be neglected. Using kinetic Monte Carlo
simulations of a three-dimensional Coulomb lattice gas, we show that
grain-boundary space-charge regions in non-dilute solid electrolytes exhibit
overscreening -- damped oscillatory space-charge profiles -- and underscreening
-- decay lengths that are longer than the corresponding Debye length and that
increase with increasing defect-defect interaction strength. Overscreening and
underscreening are known phenomena in concentrated liquid electrolytes, and the
observation of functionally analogous behaviour in solid electrolyte
space-charge regions suggests that the same underlying physics drives behaviour
in both classes of systems. We therefore expect theoretical approaches
developed to study non-dilute liquid electrolytes to be equally applicable to
future studies of solid electrolytes

The sweet spot in sustainability: a framework for corporate assessment in sugar manufacturing
The assessment of corporate sustainability has become an increasingly important topic, both within academia and in industry. For manufacturing companies to conform to their commitments to sustainable development, a standard and reliable measurement framework is required. There is, however, a lack of sector-specific and empirical research in many areas, including the sugar industry. This paper presents an empirically developed framework for the assessment of corporate sustainability within the Thai sugar industry. Multiple case studies were conducted, and a survey using questionnaires was also employed to enhance the power of generalisation. The developed framework is an accurate and reliable measurement instrument of corporate sustainability, and guidelines to assess qualitative criteria are put forward. The proposed framework can be used for a company’s self-assessment and for guiding practitioners in performance improvement and policy decision-maki
Large-Scale Velocity Structures in the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster
We present 547 optical redshifts obtained for galaxies in the region of the
Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster (HRS) using the 6dF multi-fiber spectrograph
on the UK Schmidt Telescope at the Anglo Australian Observatory. The HRS covers
an area of more than 12deg x 12deg on the sky centered at approximately RA =
03h19m, DEC = -50deg 02amin. Our 6dF observations concentrate upon the
inter-cluster regions of the HRS, from which we describe four primary results.
First, the HRS spans at least the redshift range from 17,000 to 22,500 km s^-1.
Second, the overdensity of galaxies in the inter-cluster regions of the HRS in
this redshift range is estimated to be 2.4, or del rho/ rho ~ 1.4. Third, we
find a systematic trend of increasing redshift along a Southeast-Northwest
(SE-NW) spatial axis in the HRS, in that the mean redshift of HRS members
increases by more than 1500 km s^-1 from SE to NW over a 12 deg region. Fourth,
the HRS is bi-modal in redshift with a separation of ~ 2500 km s^-1 (35 Mpc)
between the higher and lower redshift peaks. This fact is particularly evident
if the above spatial-redshift trend is fitted and removed. In short, the HRS
appears to consist of two components in redshift space, each one exhibiting a
similar systematic spatial-redshift trend along a SE-NW axis. Lastly, we
compare these results from the HRS with the Shapley supercluster and find
similar properties and large-scale features.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted to A
The Relationship Between Low Family Income and Psychological Disturbance in Young Children: An Australian Longitudinal Study
Objective This study examines the relationship between low family income (LFI) experienced at different points in time, chronic low income status and its impact on child behaviour measured at 5 years of age. Method Longitudinal data from the Mater University Study of Pregnancy were used to measure LFI in families at three points in time (the antenatal period, 6 months post birth and at 5 years of age). Outcome variables were three independent groups of behaviour problems labelled as externalising, social, attentional and thought (SAT) problems, and internalising problems. These groups were developed from the Child Behaviour Checklist. An analysis based on logistic regression modelling was carried out examining the relationship between LFI and a range of intermediate variables known to be associated with child behaviour problems. Results The more often families experienced low income, the higher the rate of child behaviour problems at age 5. Low family income was still independently associated with SAT behaviour problems after controlling for smoking in the first trimester, parenting styles, maternal depression and marital disharmony at age 5. The association between LFI and internalising and externalising behaviour problems was largely mediated by maternal depression. Conclusion Low family income is a significant factor in the aetiology of a variety of child behaviour problems. The mechanisms involved in the link between LFI and childhood internalising and externalising behaviours involve the exposure of the children to maternal depression. However, the relationship between LFI and SAT behaviour problems remains to be elucidated
