The DVCS Measurement at HERA
The recent results of the studies of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS)
events at HERA are presented. The possibility offered by this process to gain
information about skewed parton distributions (SPD) is emphasized.Comment: Talk given at New Trends in HERA Physics 2001, Ringberg Castle,

Color coherent phenomena on nuclei and the QCD evolution equation
We review the phenomenon of color coherence in quantum chromodynamics (QCD),
its implications for hard and soft processes with nuclei, and its experimental
manifestations. The relation of factorization theorems in QCD with color
coherence phenomena in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and color coherence
phenomena in hard exclusive processes is emphasized. Analyzing numerically the
QCD evolution equation for conventional and skewed parton densities in nuclei,
we study the onset of generalized color transparency and nuclear shadowing of
the sea quark and gluon distributions in nuclei as well as related phenomena.
Such novel results as the dependence of the effective coherence length on
and general trends of the QCD evolution are discussed. The limits of the
applicability of the QCD evolution equation at small Bjorken are estimated
by comparing the inelastic quark-antiquark- and two gluon-nucleon (nucleus)
cross sections, calculated within the DGLAP approximation, with the dynamical
boundaries, which follow from the unitarity of the matrix for purely QCD
interactions. We also demonstrate that principles of color coherence play an
important role in the processes of soft diffraction off nuclei.Comment: 58 pages, 19 figures, Revtex. Minor editor's changes, final version

Measurement of inclusive D*+- and associated dijet cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- mesons has been measured for photon-proton
centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 280 GeV and a photon virtuality
Q^2 < 1 GeV^2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of
37 pb^-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D*
transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical
regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative
QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The
measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular
in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study
of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a
direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD
Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a
significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level
calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a
kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.Comment: 32 pages including 6 figure
Angular and Current-Target Correlations in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Correlations between charged particles in deep inelastic ep scattering have
been studied in the Breit frame with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an
integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb-1. Short-range correlations are analysed in
terms of the angular separation between current-region particles within a cone
centred around the virtual photon axis. Long-range correlations between the
current and target regions have also been measured. The data support
predictions for the scaling behaviour of the angular correlations at high Q2
and for anti-correlations between the current and target regions over a large
range in Q2 and in the Bjorken scaling variable x. Analytic QCD calculations
and Monte Carlo models correctly describe the trends of the data at high Q2,
but show quantitative discrepancies. The data show differences between the
correlations in deep inelastic scattering and e+e- annihilation.Comment: 26 pages including 10 figures (submitted to Eur. J. Phys. C
Searches for excited fermions in ep collisions at HERA
Searches in ep collisions for heavy excited fermions have been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Excited states of electrons and quarks have been searched for in e^+p collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 300 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb^-1. Excited electrons have been sought via the decays e*->egamma, e*->eZ and e*->nuW. Excited quarks have been sought via the decays q*->qgamma and q*->qW. A search for excited neutrinos decaying via nu*->nugamma, nu*->nuZ and nu*->eW is presented using e^-p collisions at 318 GeV centre-of-mass energy, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 16.7 pb^-1. No evidence for any excited fermion is found, and limits on the characteristic couplings are derived for masses below 250 GeV
Inclusive jet cross sections in the Breit frame in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at HERA and determination of
Inclusive jet differential cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering for boson virtualities Q**2>125 GeV**2. The data were taken using the ZEUS detector at HERA and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb-1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the longitudinally invariant K_T cluster algorithm. Measurements of differential inclusive jet cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse energy (E_T,jet), jet pseudorapidity and Q**2, for jets with E_T,jet>8 GeV. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations agree well with the measurements both at high Q**2 and high E_T,jet. The value of alpha_s(M_Z), determined from an analysis of dsigma/dQ**2 for Q**2>500 GeV**2, is alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1212 +/- 0.0017 (stat.) +0.0023 / -0.0031 (syst.) +0.0028 / -0.0027 (th.)
Measurement of the Diffractive Cross Section in Deep Inelastic Scattering using ZEUS 1994 Data
The DIS diffractive cross section, , has been measured in the mass range GeV for c.m. energies GeV and photon virtualities to 140 GeV. For fixed and , the diffractive cross section rises rapidly with , with corresponding to a -averaged pomeron trajectory of \bar{\alphapom} = 1.127 \pm 0.009 (stat)^{+0.039}_{-0.012} (syst) which is larger than \bar{\alphapom} observed in hadron-hadron scattering. The dependence of the diffractive cross section is found to be the same as that of the total cross section for scattering of virtual photons on protons. The data are consistent with the assumption that the diffractive structure function factorizes according to \xpom F^{D(3)}_2 (\xpom,\beta,Q^2) = (x_0/ \xpom)^n F^{D(2)}_2(\beta,Q^2). They are also consistent with QCD based models which incorporate factorization breaking. The rise of \xpom F^{D(3)}_2 with decreasing \xpom and the weak dependence of on suggest a substantial contribution from partonic interactions
Exclusive Electroproduction of and Mesons at HERA
Exclusive production of and mesons in e^+ p collisions has
been studied with the ZEUS detector in the kinematic range for the data and for the data. Cross sections for exclusive and
production have been measured as a function of and . The
spin-density matrix elements and have
been determined for exclusive production as well as and
for exclusive production.
The results are discussed in the context of theoretical models invoking soft
and hard phenomena.Comment: 57 pages including 21 figures, minor modifications to Figs. 19-21,

Leading neutron production in e+ p collisions at HERA
The production of neutrons carrying at least 20% of the proton beam energy
(\xl > 0.2) in collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at
HERA for a wide range of , the photon virtuality, from photoproduction to
deep inelastic scattering. The neutron-tagged cross section, ,
is measured relative to the inclusive cross section, , thereby
reducing the systematic uncertainties. For \xl > 0.3, the rate of neutrons in
photoproduction is about half of that measured in hadroproduction, which
constitutes a clear breaking of factorisation. There is about a 20% rise in the
neutron rate between photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering, which may
be attributed to absorptive rescattering in the system. For 0.64 <
\xl < 0.82, the rate of neutrons is almost independent of the Bjorken scaling
variable and . However, at lower and higher \xl values, there is a
clear but weak dependence on these variables, thus demonstrating the breaking
of limiting fragmentation. The neutron-tagged structure function,
{{F}^{\rm\tiny LN(3)}_2}(x,Q^2,\xl), rises at low values of in a way
similar to that of the inclusive \ff of the proton. The total
cross section and the structure function of the pion,
where x_\pi = x/(1-\xl), have been determined using a one-pion-exchange
model, up to uncertainties in the normalisation due to the poorly understood
pion flux. At fixed , has approximately the same
dependence as of the proton.Comment: 61 pages, 19 figure
