The First Moments of Nucleon Generalized Parton Distributions
We extrapolate the first moments of the generalized parton distributions
using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The calculation is based on the
one loop level with the finite range regularization. The description of the
lattice data is satisfactory and the extrapolated moments at physical pion mass
are consistent with the results obtained with dimensional regularization,
although the extrapolation in the momentum transfer to does show
sensitivity to form factor effects which lie outside the realm of chiral
perturbation theory. We discuss the significance of the results in the light of
modern experiments as well as QCD inspired models.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
Simulations of a Scintillator Compton Gamma Imager for Safety and Security
We are designing an all-scintillator Compton gamma imager for use in security
investigations and remediation actions involving radioactive threat material.
To satisfy requirements for a rugged and portable instrument, we have chosen
solid scintillator for the active volumes of both the scatter and absorber
detectors. Using the BEAMnrc/EGSnrc Monte Carlo simulation package, we have
constructed models using four different materials for the scatter detector:
LaBr_3, NaI, CaF_2 and PVT. We have compared the detector performances using
angular resolution, efficiency, and image resolution. We find that while PVT
provides worse performance than that of the detectors based entirely on
inorganic scintillators, all of the materials investigated for the scatter

Double deeply virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon
We study the double deeply virtual Compton scattering (DDVCS) process off the
nucleon, through the scattering of a spacelike virtual photon with large
virtuality resulting in the production of a timelike virtual photon, decaying
into an e^+ e^- pair. This process is expressed in the Bjorken regime in terms
of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and it is shown that by varying the
invariant mass of the lepton pair, one can directly extract the GPDs from the
observables. We give predictions for the DDVCS cross section and beam helicity
asymmetry and discuss its experimental feasibility.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Aerial Measurement of Radioxenon Concentration off the West Coast of Vancouver Island following the Fukushima Reactor Accident
In response to the Fukushima nuclear reactor accident, on March 20th, 2011,
Natural Resources Canada conducted aerial radiation surveys over water just off
of the west coast of Vancouver Island. Dose-rate levels were found to be
consistent with background radiation, however a clear signal due to Xe-133 was
observed. Methods to extract Xe-133 count rates from the measured spectra, and
to determine the corresponding Xe-133 volumetric concentration, were developed.
The measurements indicate that Xe-133 concentrations on average lie in the

Color coherent phenomena on nuclei and the QCD evolution equation
We review the phenomenon of color coherence in quantum chromodynamics (QCD),
its implications for hard and soft processes with nuclei, and its experimental
manifestations. The relation of factorization theorems in QCD with color
coherence phenomena in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and color coherence
phenomena in hard exclusive processes is emphasized. Analyzing numerically the
QCD evolution equation for conventional and skewed parton densities in nuclei,
we study the onset of generalized color transparency and nuclear shadowing of
the sea quark and gluon distributions in nuclei as well as related phenomena.
Such novel results as the dependence of the effective coherence length on
and general trends of the QCD evolution are discussed. The limits of the
applicability of the QCD evolution equation at small Bjorken are estimated
by comparing the inelastic quark-antiquark- and two gluon-nucleon (nucleus)
cross sections, calculated within the DGLAP approximation, with the dynamical
boundaries, which follow from the unitarity of the matrix for purely QCD
interactions. We also demonstrate that principles of color coherence play an

Theory of deeply virtual Compton scattering on the nucleon
We compute the cross section for leptoproduction of the real photon off the
nucleon, which is sensitive to the deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitude
with power accuracy. Our considerations go beyond the leading twist and involve
the complete analysis in the twist-three approximation. We discuss consequences
of the target and lepton beam polarizations for accessing the generalized
parton distributions from experimental measurements of the azimuthal angular
dependence of the final state photon or nucleon. We introduce several sets of
asymmetries, defined as Fourier moments with respect to the azimuthal angle,
which allow for a clear separation of the twist-two and -three sectors. Relying
on a simple ansatz for the generalized parton distributions, we give
quantitative estimates for azimuthal and spin asymmetries, discuss the
uncertainties of these predictions brought in by radiative corrections, and
compare them with experimental data as well as other theoretical expectations.
Furthermore, we derive a general parametrization of the DVCS amplitudes in the

I read it on reddit: Exploring the role of online communities in the 2016 US elections news cycle
Reddit has developed into a significant platform for political discussion among Millennials. In this exploratory study, we examine subscription trends on three political sub-forums on Reddit during the 2016 US presidential elections: /The_Donald, /SandersForPresident, and /HillaryClinton. As a theoretical framework, we draw from work on online communities’ group identity and cohesion. Concretely, we investigate how subscription dynamics relate to positive, negative and neutral news events occurring during the election cycle. We classify news events using a sentiment analysis of event-related news headlines. We observe that users who supported Sanders displayed no consolidation of support for Clinton after she won the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Secondly, we show that negative news events affected Sanders and Clintons subscription trends negatively, while showing no effect for Donald Trump. This gives empirical credence to Trump’s controversial claim that he could “stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and not lose any voters”. We offer a number of explanations for the observed phenomena: the nature of the content of the three subreddits, their cultural dynamics, and changing dynamics of partisanship. We posit that the ‘death of expertise’ expresses itself on Reddit as a switch in persuasion tactics from a policy-based to an emotions-based approach, and that group members’ agreement on policy proved a weak marker for online communities’ group identity and cohesion. We also claim that strong partisanship coupled with weak party affiliation among Millennials contributed to the low levels of Democratic support consolidation after Clinton won the nomination
