Tidally-driven Roche-Lobe Overflow of Hot Jupiters with MESA
Many exoplanets have now been detected in orbits with ultra-short periods,
very close to the Roche limit. Building upon our previous work, we study the
possibility that mass loss through Roche lobe overflow (RLO) may affect the
evolution of these planets, and could possibly transform a hot Jupiter into a
lower-mass planet (hot Neptune or super-Earth). We focus here on systems in
which the mass loss occurs slowly ("stable mass transfer" in the language of
binary star evolution) and we compute their evolution in detail with the binary
evolution code MESA. We include the effects of tides, RLO, irradiation and
photo-evaporation of the planet, as well as the stellar wind and magnetic
braking. Our calculations all start with a hot Jupiter close to its Roche
limit, in orbit around a sun-like star. The initial orbital decay and onset of
RLO are driven by tidal dissipation in the star. We confirm that such a system
can indeed evolve to produce lower-mass planets in orbits of a few days. The
RLO phase eventually ends and, depending on the details of the mass transfer
and on the planetary core mass, the orbital period can remain around a few days
for several Gyr. The remnant planets have a rocky core and some amount of
envelope material, which is slowly removed via photo-evaporation at nearly
constant orbital period; these have properties resembling many of the observed
super-Earths and sub-Neptunes. For these remnant planets we also predict an
anti-correlation between mass and orbital period; very low-mass planets
() in ultra-short periods (<1d) cannot be produced through this type of evolution.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Accepted by ApJ. The manuscript has

Mining for Observables: A New Challenge in Numerical Relativity
One of the motivations behind numerical relativity is to provide gravitational wave signals of compact objects to observers using the new gravitational wave detectors. Yet, because of the complexities involved, no dependable signals of binary-black hole coalescences have been established. The work in this proceedings is motivated by how numerical relativity can be used today to predict robust features in gravitational wave signals of binary black-hole coalescence by making approximations to the full problem. To illustrate this, we present results from evolving a Klein-Gordon equation on a frozen background. The background is set by a sequence of initial data in which the binary is in quasi-equilibrium. We probe the data resulting from the evolution for the transition between the linear and non-linear regimes using oscillations of the black holes as our guide. This information is used to motivate a qualitative picture of the gravitational signal of a black-hole coalescence

'I' is for 'Insider': Practitioner Research in Schools
"In this paper we five teachers and teacher educators draw upon our personal
classroom experiences in order to explore the definitions, descriptions,
and nature of educational practitioner research, what we call teacher
research. We highlight the tensions that can exist between and among
teacher research, institutional needs and macro-policies, and argue that as
both stance and method, teacher research can complement traditional, outsider-
driven social science research. Further, practitioner research can
check the errors and inequitable outcomes which may result from educational
policies strictly reliant on the large-scale quantitative research designs
currently dominant in the United States." (author's abstract

The new outfit of Neusticemys neuquina: Holw recent findings and techniques helped clarify its phylogenetic affinities
Neusticemys neuquina is one of the two known turtles from the Upper Jurassic of the Vaca Muerta Formation. Since its initial description in 1988 its taxonomic affinities have been unstable because all known specimens are postcranial elements, which seem to lack phylogenetic relevance. Initially referred, putatively, to the genus Eurysternum, it has also been considered a protostegid or a basal cryptodire. Recently, the discovery and descriptions of three skulls (MOZ 064, MACN-PV 105, MHNSR-PV-1195) and their study using computed tomography helped establish it as a member of Thalassochelydia. The new skulls have in common with Thalassochelydia: the articular process of the quadrate posteriorly oriented; the presence of a prominent, ventrally infolding ridge of the posterior surface of the processus articularis of the quadrate; a long interpterygoid contact; the presence of a pterygoid contact with the articular surfaces of the quadrate; an anterolateral recess of the anterior surface of the quadrate lateral to the processus trochlearis oticum; the presence of a fossa on the supraoccipital-opisthotic-exoccipital contact area; the foramina anterius caroticus cerebralis close together but as independent foramina in the basisphenoid; and the presence of a splenial bone in the mandible. Some of the features that distinguish it from other Thalassochelydia are the presence of a depression on the ventral surface of the basisphenoid, a relatively larger foramen nervi trigemini and reduced and steepened triturating surfaces in both the mandible and maxilla. The mandibular morphology resembles that of Dermochelys coriacea rather than that of other thalassochelydians and panchelonioids, which might indicate similarities in the feeding preferences between these species. New research has shown that thalassochelydians might have been better adapted to marine environments than previously thought and Neusticemys neuquina is not the exception.Fil: González Ruiz, Pablo. Septic Arthritis and Multifocal Osteomyelitis Caused by Capnocytophaga Canimorsus: A Case Report
Capnocytophaga; Osteomyelitis; Septic arthritisCapnocitofaga; Osteomielitis; Artritis sépticaCapnocytophaga; Osteomielitis; Artritis sèpticaMicrobiological diagnosis of chronic osteoarticular infections remains a major challenge, particularly when the clinical presentation is atypical and the pathogen is uncommon. In this unique case, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a microorganism belonging to the oral microbiota of some domestic animals, caused septic arthritis and multifocal osteomyelitis in the long bone of a 43-year-old immunocompetent man. The patient was treated with two-stage surgery and local and systemic antibiotic therapy, and had a successful recovery. C. canimorsus should be considered as a possible etiological agent in patients with osteoarticular pathology and a history of exposure to domestic animals
