In addition, we show the relationship between the conditioning of the process (phi(t))(t >= 0) with a negative drift to oscillate and the conditioning of it to stay nonnegative for a long time, and the relationship between the conditioning of (phi(t))(t >= 0) with a negative drift to drift to infinity and the conditioning of it to hit large levels before hitting 0

    A new comprehensive lightning instrumentation system has been designed for Launch Complex 39B (LC39B) at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. This new instrumentation system includes six synchronized high-speed video cameras, current sensors installed on the nine downcouductors of the new lightning protection system (LPS) for LC39B; four dH/dt, 3-axis measurement stations; and five dE/dt stations composed of two antennas each. The LPS received 8 direct lightning strikes (a total of 19 strokes) from March 31 through December 31, 2011. The measured peak currents and locations are compared to those reported by the CGLSS 11 and the NLDN. Results of comparison are presented and analyzed in this paper

    Physical conditioning strategies for the prevention of concussion in sport : a scoping review

    BACKGROUND : Concussion in sports has received a great deal of media attention and may result in short and longer-lasting symptoms, especially in adolescents. Although significant strides have been made in the identification and management of concussion, less is known about the primary prevention of this condition. The aims of this scoping review are to (1) summarize the current research of physical conditioning strategies to reduce or prevent concussion incidence in individuals participating in sport, especially adolescents, and (2) to identify gaps in the knowledge base. Our research question was what is known from the existing literature about physical preparation strategies to reduce or prevent concussion in adult and adolescent sports? METHODS: Three literature searches were conducted by information officers at two universities at six-month intervals, using five electronic databases (PubMed; WorldCat.org; Mendeley; EBSCOHost and Ovid MEDLINE). To increase the search range, subject experts were consulted and articles and reference lists were hand searched. A scoping review methodology identified eligible studies that analyzed physical preparation techniques on modifiable physical risk factors in athletes to reduce the incidence of concussion. The PRISMA-ScR checklist guided the reporting of the findings. RESULTS : A total of 1414 possible articles were identified, after duplicates removed, and articles analyzed against the inclusion and exclusion criteria, only 9 articles qualified for analysis. Two articles were found from studying reference lists. Thus, a total of 11 articles were included in the final evaluation for the purposes of this study. Data are reported from mostly adolescent subjects participating in nine different sports from three countries. Findings are presented with specific reference to previously recognized modifiable risk factors of concussion which include neck strength, neck size, cervical stiffness, type of sport, and pre-activity exercises. CONCLUSION : There is limited research examining the physical preparation of athletes, especially in adolescents, to reduce or prevent concussion, and conflicting evidence in the few small sample studies that were identified.     No arbitrage and closure results for trading cones with transaction costs

    In this paper, we consider trading with proportional transaction costs as in Schachermayerā€™s paper (Schachermayer in Math. Finance 14:19ā€“48, 2004). We give a necessary and sufficient condition for A{\mathcal{A}} , the cone of claims attainable from zero endowment, to be closed. Then we show how to define a revised set of trading prices in such a way that, firstly, the corresponding cone of claims attainable for zero endowment, A~{\tilde{ {\mathcal{A}}}} , does obey the fundamental theorem of asset pricing and, secondly, if A~{\tilde{ {\mathcal{A}}}} is arbitrage-free then it is the closure of A{\mathcal{A}} .     The epidemiology of injury and illness amongst athletes at the Indian Ocean Island Games, Mauritius 2019

    Background: The Indian Ocean Island Games is a multi-sport event that occurs every four years and includes athletes from seven islands of the Indian Ocean. Objective: This study aims to describe the injury and illness epidemiology of the athletes participating during the 2019 Indian Ocean Islands Games. Material and Methods: This prospective cohort study recorded injury and illness cases from athletes who competed in these Games. All medical physicians received detailed instructions and training on data collection using an injury report form. All athletes (minor and adults) who provided consent, or consent given from the minorsā€™ guardians, were included in this study. Athletes who did not provide consent for this study were excluded. Results: 1 521 athletes (531 women and 990 men) reported 12 injuries per 100 athletes (n=160) and 6 illnesses per 100 athletes (n=85). The percentage of distribution of injuries were highest in football and basketball. Most injuries occurred during competition compared with training Joint sprains were the most common type of injury (28%), followed by muscle strains (19%). Men suffered the majority of injuries (79% vs. 21%). Similarly, men sustained more illness than women (57% vs. 43%). Most illnesses affected the respiratory system (67%), and infection was the most common cause of illness (84%) in participating athletes. Discussion: These findings are similar to previous events in other parts of the world. However, unique ailments, not previously reported on, were discovered. Conclusion: Epidemiological data from this study can be inferred to athletes who compete in similar multi-sport events and/or Olympic Games in the Indian Ocean region

    The Risks and Benefits of Genetically Modified Crops: A Multidisciplinary Perspective

    Worldwide, the area planted in genetically modified (GM) crops has increased dramatically in recent years. Between 1996 and 1999, it rose from 1.6 X 106 ha to more than 35 X 106 ha (James 1998, May 1999). This rapid increase has provoked an explosion of concern, particularly in Europe, over the health and environmental impacts of these crops. Despite claims of safety and warnings against popular panic, public concern over GM crops has resulted in changes in their marketing, labeling, planting, and trade. These changes have fueled an increasingly heated debate among environmental advocates, critics of industrial agriculture, seed companies, governments, and scientists. This debate has been characterized by exaggerations of both the safety and danger of GM crops, and by attempts to suppress and avoid public discussion. This paper is the product of a discussion among an international, interdisciplinary group of scientists. Our discussion was based on the Forum articles in this issue of Conservation Ecology. These articles summarize the nature of the debate over biotechnology, describe ways to cope with potential ecological impacts of GM crops, provide insights into the cause and validity of public concern, and make suggestions on where to go from here. Our own dialogue, which was informed by these and other articles, attempts to broaden the debate and develop strategies for coping with and directing the development of biotechnology. As an interdisciplinary group, we do not try to assess the details of particular GM crops, but rather to connect the ecological, economic, and political issues that surround them. As noted by Conway (2000), Pimentel (2000), and others, the balance of evidence suggests that GM organisms have the potential to both degrade and improve the functioning of agroecosystems. Depending on which GM crops are developed and how they are used, GM crops could lead to either increases or decreases in pesticide use, the enhancement or degradation of the ecological services provided by agroecosystems, or the loss or conservation of biodiversity. However, as Conway argues, the current character of GM crop development provides cause for concern

    A Perspective on Future Research Directions in Information Theory

    Information theory is rapidly approaching its 70th birthday. What are promising future directions for research in information theory? Where will information theory be having the most impact in 10-20 years? What new and emerging areas are ripe for the most impact, of the sort that information theory has had on the telecommunications industry over the last 60 years? How should the IEEE Information Theory Society promote high-risk new research directions and broaden the reach of information theory, while continuing to be true to its ideals and insisting on the intellectual rigor that makes its breakthroughs so powerful? These are some of the questions that an ad hoc committee (composed of the present authors) explored over the past two years. We have discussed and debated these questions, and solicited detailed inputs from experts in fields including genomics, biology, economics, and neuroscience. This report is the result of these discussions
