The Federal Administrative Court Proposal: An Examination of General Principals

Simulations of relativistic hydrodynamics often need both high accuracy and robust shock-handling properties. The discontinuous Galerkin method combines these features—a high order of convergence in regions where the solution is smooth and shock-capturing properties for regions where it is not—with geometric flexibility and is therefore well suited to solve the partial differential equations describing astrophysical scenarios. We present here evolutions of a general-relativistic neutron star with the discontinuous Galerkin method. In these simulations, we simultaneously evolve the spacetime geometry and the matter on the same computational grid, which we conform to the spherical geometry of the problem. To verify the correctness of our implementation, we perform standard convergence and shock tests. We then show results for evolving, in three dimensions, a Kerr black hole; a neutron star in the Cowling approximation (holding the spacetime metric fixed); and, finally, a neutron star where the spacetime and matter are both dynamical. The evolutions show long-term stability, good accuracy, and an improved rate of convergence versus a comparable-resolution finite-volume method

Determinants of Employment Growth at MNEs: Evidence from Egypt, India, South Africa and Vietnam

Foreign investors are expected to contribute to economic development through a variety of channels. However, many foreign investment operations are small, and almost insignificant in their impact on the local environment. An important indication of the potential contribution of foreign investors is thus their employment growth. Employees working for, and trained by, a multinational enterprise may become carriers of new technology and business practices. The more employees receive access to new knowledge, the more they in turn may spread the knowledge across the economy, for instance by setting up their own businesses. In this paper, we make a first step in investigating the determinants of this important mediating variable, employment growth. For a dataset covering four diverse emerging economies, we find that wholly-owned FDI operations have higher employment growth, while local industry characteristics moderate the growth effect.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/40093/3/wp707.pd

Evolving relativistic fluid spacetimes using pseudospectral methods and finite differencing

We present a new code for solving the coupled Einstein-hydrodynamics equations to evolve relativistic, self-gravitating fluids. The Einstein field equations are solved on one grid using pseudospectral methods, while the fluids are evolved on another grid by finite differencing. We discuss implementation details, such as the communication between the grids and the treatment of stellar surfaces, and present code tests.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the Eleventh Marcel Grossmann Meetin

The fish fauna of the Iwokrama Forest

Fishes were collected from the rivers in and around the Iwokrama Forest during January-February and November-December 1997. Four hundred species of fish were recorded from forty families in ten orders. Many of these fishes are newly recorded from Guyana and several are thought to be endemic. The number of species recorded for the area is surprising given the low level of effort and suggests that this area may be particularly important from a fish diversity perspective. This paper focuses on species of particular interest from a management perspective including those considered economically important, rare or endangered. The paper is also the basis for developing fisheries management systems in the Iwokrama Forest and Rupununi Wetlands

Of Sexual Bondage: The \u27Legitimate Penological Interest\u27 in Restricting Sexual Expression in Women\u27s Prisons

Despite its prevalence, sexual expression among inmates is currently prohibited in United States prisons. Recent scholarship, however, has advocated allowing certain types of sexual expression in women\u27s prisons. The advocates of such a position differentiate between different types of sex within the correctional system: sexual expression that the system has no interest in prohibiting and should not bar, and sex acts that the system does have an interest in prohibiting and should continue to regulate. This position is based on the dual assumptions that, first, women in prison as a collective unit would benefit from some types of sexual expression, and second, that the government has a legitimate interest in prohibiting others. This paper will examine both assumptions with the intent to determine what intersection exists between these interests. Recognizing that much of the research in this area has focused on male prisoners, rape, and/or staff abuse, this paper will primarily examine women prisoners engaged in consensual sex with other female inmates. Overall, it will reject the argument that any type of sex should be officially permitted within prison, due to the destructive nature of both prison relationships and the prison itself and to the impossibility of consent to any prison relationship
