    On debugging in a parallel system

    In this paper a description is given of a partly implemented parallel debugger for the Twente University Multicomputer (TUMULT). The system's basic method for exchange of data is message passing. Experience has learned that most programming errors in application software are made in calls to the kernel and the interprocess communication. The debugger is intended to be used for locating bugs at this level in the application software. It is assumed that basic blocks of the debuggee can be debugged using a traditional sequential sourcelevel debugger

    Following initial establishment of the parasitoid, Tetrastichus julis (Walker), at a carefully managed field nursery, releases of parasitized Oulema melanopus larvae were made by Michigan county agents at preselected sites throughout the lower peninsula during 1970-74. A follow-up recovery program during 1971-75 revealed continued dispersion and population increase for T. julis. An independent census verified the increasing rates of parasitism

    Pulsed beams as field probes for precision measurement

    We describe a technique for mapping the spatial variation of static electric, static magnetic, and rf magnetic fields using a pulsed atomic or molecular beam. The method is demonstrated using a beam designed to measure the electric dipole moment of the electron. We present maps of the interaction region, showing sensitivity to (i) electric field variation of 1.5 V/cm at 3.3 kV/cm with a spatial resolution of 15 mm; (ii) magnetic field variation of 5 nT with 25 mm resolution; (iii) radio-frequency magnetic field amplitude with 15 mm resolution. This new diagnostic technique is very powerful in the context of high-precision atomic and molecular physics experiments, where pulsed beams have not hitherto found widespread application.Comment: 6 pages, 12 figures.     The Chemical Nature of Ti<sub>4</sub>O<sub>10</sub><sup>-</sup>: Vibrational Predissociation Spectroscopy Combined with Global Structure Optimization

    The gas-phase infrared spectrum of Ti4O10- is studied in the spectral range from 400 cm–1 to 1250 cm–1 using cryogenic ion trap vibrational spectroscopy, in combination with density functional theory (DFT). The infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectrum of D2-tagged Ti4O10- provides evidence for a structure of lower symmetry that contains a superoxo group (1121 cm–1) and two terminal Ti=O moieties. DFT combined with a genetic algorithm for global structure optimization predicts two isomers which feature a superoxo group: the Cs symmetric global minimum-energy structure and a similar isomer (C1) that is slightly higher in energy. Coupled cluster calculations confirm the relative stability. Comparison of the harmonic DFT spectra (different functionals) with the IRPD spectrum suggests that both of these isomers contribute. Earlier assignments to the adamantane-like C3v isomer with three terminal Ti–O• – groups in a quartet state are not confirmed.     International audienceWhen studying transverse modes propagating parallel to a static magnetic field, an apparent contradiction arises between the weakly nonlinear results obtained from the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, predicting envelope solitons (where the amplitude is stationary in the wave frame, but the phase is not), and recent results for whistler oscillitons, indicating that really stationary structures of large amplitude are possible. Revisiting this problem in the fluid dynamic approach, care has been taken not to introduce charge neutrality from the outset, because this not only neglects electric stresses compared to magnetic stresses, which is reasonable, but could also imply from Poisson's equation a vanishing of the wave electric field. Nevertheless, the fixed points of the remaining equations are the same, whether charge neutrality is assumed from the outset or not, so that the solitary wave solutions at not too large amplitudes will be very similar. This is borne out by numerical simulations of the solutions under the two hypotheses, showing that the lack of correspondence with the DNLS envelope solitons indicates the limitations of the reductive perturbation approach, and is not a consequence of assuming charge neutrality

    Nonlinear projective filtering in a data stream

    We introduce a modified algorithm to perform nonlinear filtering of a time series by locally linear phase space projections. Unlike previous implementations, the algorithm can be used not only for a posteriori processing but includes the possibility to perform real time filtering in a data stream. The data base that represents the phase space structure generated by the data is updated dynamically. This also allows filtering of non-stationary signals and dynamic parameter adjustment. We discuss exemplary applications, including the real time extraction of the fetal electrocardiogram from abdominal recordings.Comment: 8 page

    Structural Examination of Au/Ge(001) by Surface X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

    The one-dimensional reconstruction of Au/Ge(001) was investigated by means of autocorrelation functions from surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Interatomic distances found in the SXRD-Patterson map are substantiated by results from STM. The Au coverage, recently determined to be 3/4 of a monolayer of gold, together with SXRD leads to three non-equivalent positions for Au within the c(8x2) unit cell. Combined with structural information from STM topography and line profiling, two building blocks are identified: Au-Ge hetero-dimers within the top wire architecture and Au homo-dimers within the trenches. The incorporation of both components is discussed using density functional theory and model based Patterson maps by substituting Germanium atoms of the reconstructed Ge(001) surface.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Fluctuations and stability in front propagation

    Propagating fronts arising from bistable reaction-diffusion equations are a purely deterministic effect. Stochastic reaction-diffusion processes also show front propagation which coincides with the deterministic effect in the limit of small fluctuations (usually, large populations). However, for larger fluctuations propagation can be affected. We give an example, based on the classic spruce-budworm model, where the direction of wave propagation, i.e., the relative stability of two phases, can be reversed by fluctuations.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Expectancies, working alliance, and outcome in transdiagnostic and single diagnosis treatment for anxiety disorders: an investigation of mediation

    Patients’ outcome expectancies and the working alliance are two psychotherapy process variables that researchers have found to be associated with treatment outcome, irrespective of treatment approach and problem area. Despite this, little is known about the mechanisms accounting for this association, and whether contextual factors (e.g., psychotherapy type) impact the strength of these relationships. The primary aim of this study was to examine whether patient-rated working alliance quality mediates the relationship between outcome expectancies and pre- to post-treatment change in anxiety symptoms using data from a recent randomized clinical trial comparing a transdiagnostic treatment (the Unified Protocol [UP]; Barlow et al., Unified protocol for transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders: Client workbook, Oxford University Press, New York, 2011a; Barlow et al., Unified protocol for transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders: Patient workbook. New York: Oxford University Press, 2017b) to single diagnosis protocols (SDPs) for patients with a principal heterogeneous anxiety disorder (n = 179). The second aim was to explore whether cognitive-behavioral treatment condition (UP vs. SDP) moderated this indirect relationship. Results from mediation and moderated mediation models indicated that, when collapsing across the two treatment conditions, the relationship between expectancies and outcome was partially mediated by the working alliance [B = 0.037, SE = 0.05, 95% CI (.005, 0.096)]. Interestingly, within-condition analyses showed that this conditional indirect effect was only present for SDP patients, whereas in the UP condition, working alliance did not account for the association between expectancies and outcome. These findings suggest that outcome expectancies and working alliance quality may interact to influence treatment outcomes, and that the nature and strength of the relationships among these constructs may differ as a function of the specific cognitive-behavioral treatment approach utilized.This study was funded by grant R01 MH090053 from the National Institutes of Health.
