Emf of the following galvanic cell employing solid electrolyte were measured at the temperature range of 700°~1100°C. Pt/Ni · NiO/O--/Air/Pt Pt/Ni · NiO/O--/Cu · Cu₂O/Pt Pt/Ni · NiO/O--/Co · CoO/Pt Pt (Fe · FeO/O--/Ni · NiO/Pt Pt/Fe · Fe₁₋ₓO/O--/Fe₁₋yO · Fe₃O₄/Pt Pt/Ni · NiO/O--/Fe₃O₄ · Fe₂O₃/Pt From those results the equilibrium oxygen pressures of Ni·NiO, Cu·Cu₂O, Co·CoO, Fe·FeO, FeO·Fe₃O₄ and Fe₃O₄·Fe₂O₃, and the standard free energy of formation of NiO, Cu₂O, CoO, FeO, FeO·Fe₃O₃ and Fe₂O₃ were estimated. Based on these experimental results it is shown that 1) stabilized zirconia and thoria could be used as a solid electrolyte under the conditions of 700°~1100°C and partial pressure of oxygen between 1 atm. and 10⁻²⁰ atm., and a little impurity in electrolyte did not have an unfavorable effect on the determination of equilibrium partial oxygen pressure of metal-metallic oxide systems 2) alumina and magnesia could not be used as a solid electrolyte of the present emf measurements 3) one might conclude that emf measurements using a solid electrolyte could obtain the same thermodynamic values as the other reliable equilibrium methods

Prevention of Post-Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography Pancreatitis by Endoscopic Pancreatic Stenting after Insertion of Self-Expandable Metal Stent for Malignant Distal Biliary Stricture

The insertion of a self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) for nonpancreatic cancer is a factor predicting the risk of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis (PEP). We evaluated the efficacy of endo-scopic pancreatic stenting (EPS) to prevent PEP after SEMS insertion in patients with malignant distal biliary stricture and without main pancreatic duct (MPD) obstruction. We performed a single-center, retrospective, historically controlled investigation to assess the outcomes of 33 consecutive patients who underwent SEMS insertion. From March 2013 to June 2015, 13 patients did not undergo EPS (Non-EPS group). The other 20 patients underwent EPS (EPS group) between July 2015 and August 2018. The background data demonstrated no significant differences. Except for one patient in the Non-EPS group, all patients underwent biliary sphinc-terotomy. The EPS group’s PEP incidence was significantly lower (n = 1, 5%) than that of the Non-EPS group (n = 4, 31%) (p = 0.04). The median serum amylase and lipase levels after the procedure were significantly lower in the EPS group than in the Non-EPS group (amylase: 104 vs. 262 U/L; p < 0.01, lipase: 102 vs. 666 U/L; p = 0.01). The use of EPS decreased the incidence of PEP after SEMS insertion in individuals with malignant distal biliary stricture and without MPD obstruction

Reliability and Validity of a Device to Measure Muscle Hardness

Although clinicians judge muscle tenseness by palpation, methods to quantify this have not become established. We examined the reliability and validity of a commercially available myotonometer to assess the biceps brachii and brachioradialis. Torques ranging from 0-72% of maximum effort were isometrically resisted in five men and five women, all healthy and 21-23 years of age. Root-mean-square of surface electromyographic response was also measured. Intraclass correlations were 0.80 or higher within sessions but decreased to 0.57 between sessions except for myotonometry of the biceps brachii. Correlation with isometric load was 0.79 or higher for both myotonometry and electromyography, but these relations were consistently curvilinear. The myotonometer is more useful for fleshy muscles like the biceps brachii than for thin muscles like the brachioradialis. Because hardness has a curvilinear relation with tension in the muscle, hardness cannot be considered strictly equivalent to tension
