    PRÁTICAS ALIMENTARES E HABITUS EM MÃES: alimentações particulares no contexto do município de Santos

    O presente estudo investigou as práticas alimentares de 439 mães residentes no município de Santos – Brasil, e suas interfaces com o conceito de habitus proposto por Bourdieu. A partir da análise de cluster dos escores de padrão alimentar e de formas de preparo e consumo dos alimentos, foram derivados clusters de cinco práticas alimentares (donas de casa práticas; mães-esposas; hedonistas preocupadas com o corpo; tradicionalistas e cozinheiras pouco preocupadas com a saúde). Para identificar os habitus dos clusters de práticas alimentares, comparou-se, entre eles, as variáveis localização do domicílio, estado de nascimento, estado civil, número de filhos, tabagismo, profissão, nível socioeconômico, práticas para emagrecer, comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares, atitudes alimentares transtornadas, insatisfação corporal, consumo cultural e tecnológico. Observou-se, nas práticas alimentares encontradas, a influência de diferentes questões de gênero, principalmente relacionadas à construção social da maternidade. Encontrou-se, desta maneira, uma multiplicidade de práticas alimentares, resultantes da confluência de forças que agem segundo os campos e o habitus das mães, sendo que, para muitas mulheres, a família parece ser o principal campo. O presente trabalho aponta para a importância do habitus no estudo das práticas alimentares, uma vez que, como resultado da interação entre diversas forças que moldam o habitus, observamos uma variedade de práticas alimentares que seguem diferentes direções. Assim, encontramos práticas alimentares complexas e que não podem ser entendidas em uma associação linear com os capitais econômico e cultural dos grupos estudados. Por fim constatou-se que, motivado por um conjunto de ideias, o comer gera um movimento de ação-reflexão que compõe uma práxis alimentar.This study investigated the eating practices of 439 mothers living in the city of Santos, Brazil, and the interface between these practices and the concept of habitus as proposed by Bourdieu. From a cluster analysis of dietary pattern scores and the forms of food preparation and consumption scores, five clusters of eating practices were derived (practical housewives, mother-spouses, hedonists concerned about their bodies, traditionalists and cooks not concerned about their health). To access the habitus of the clusters of eating practices, the following variables were compared among them: location of residence, their state of birth, marital status, number of children, tobacco use, profession, socioeconomic status, weight loss practices, risk behaviours for eating disorders, disordered eating attitudes, body dissatisfaction, cultural and technological consumption We could observe five groups of eating practices from the mothers living in Santos that were per passed by the gender roles, specially related to the social construction of motherhood. We could also verify a variety of eating practices resulted from a confluence of forces that act upon the fields and the habitus of the subjects. This study highlights the importance of habitus in the study of eating practices because, as a result of the interaction of forces that compose the habitus, we observe a multiplicity of eating practices that follow different directions. Thus, we found complex eating practices that cannot be understood in a linear relation with the economic and cultural capital of the studied groups.     Under the "weight" of norms: Social representations of overweight and obesity among Brazilian, French and Spanish dietitians and laywomen

    Most contemporary Western cultures are characterized by fatphobia. The fat body is seen as morally incorrect, a sign of disease, loss of control and weakness. People with obesity and overweight, especially women, are discriminated against and stigmatized for their body size, including by health professionals like dietitians. This study sought to understand and compare social representations of obesity and overweight among dietitians and laywomen from three nationalities: Brazilian, French and Spanish. A qualitative and comparative methodology was established based on 131 semi-structured individual interviews. The analysis revealed that the categories of overweight and obesity were negatively perceived by laywomen and dietitians from all three nationalities. Moral discourses linking these conditions with lack of discipline and a lack of emotional control were frequently used. Fatness was associated with irrationality, putting individuals who were overweight and obese in a position of social and moral inferiority. In the case of obesity, these ideas were more discriminatory and stigmatizing. Although environmental, genetic, hereditary or metabolic causes were mentioned as factors causing obesity, behavioural aspects occupied a central place in the discourses. Differences were also observed among the three nationalities. Cultural factors related to the relationship with body and food seemed to influence the interviewees' social representations. Brazilian laywomen and dietitians put more emphasis on moral and individual aspects. Spanish, French and informants who were overweight were more likely to cite physiological and environmental determinants. French informants also mentioned the role of food education given by parents. In conclusion, the discourses of professionals and laywomen had more similarities than differences, were based on moral and normative judgements and influenced by sociocultural norms.     Body image dissatisfaction in female Brazilian university students

    A insatisfação com a imagem corporal é avaliada por meio da diferença entre a figura real e a idealizada e pode influenciar comportamentos alimentares. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a insatisfação corporal de universitárias do sexo feminino nas cinco regiões do país e possíveis associações e correlações com a idade, o estado nutricional, a renda e o grau de escolaridade do chefe da família. MÉTODOS: 2.402 universitárias responderam à Escala de Silhuetas de Stunkard. As regiões foram comparadas por meio da análise de variância; correlações entre as variáveis foram analisadas pelos coeficientes de Pearson e Spearman. RESULTADOS: 64,4 por cento gostariam de ser menores do que sua figura atual, e mesmo as estudantes eutróficas escolheram figuras saudável e ideal menores. Na região Norte foram apontados os mais magros padrões ideais e de saúde e na região Centro-Oeste, os maiores. CONCLUSÃO: A ocorrência de insatisfação corporal foi bastante expressiva, com algumas diferenças regionais e sociodemográficas que devem ser consideradasBody image dissatisfaction is evaluated according to the difference between the real figure and idealized figure, and could influence eating behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate body dissatisfaction among female university students from the five regions of Brazil and possible associations and correlations with age, nutritional status, individual income and parental education. METHODS: 2,402 students answered the Stunkard's Body Image Scale and regions were compared by variance analysis, and correlations among variables with Pearson's and Spearman's coefficients. RESULTS: 64.4 per cent desired a figure smaller than their actual one, and even the normal weight range students chose ideal and healthy smaller figures. In North region the ideal and healthy patterns were smaller and in the Central West bigger.     Práticas alimentares atuais e pregressas em mulheres recuperadas da anorexia nervosa: uma abordagem qualitativa

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze qualitatively how women, who have recovered from anorexia nervosa, perceive and describe their current eating practices, as well as the ones developed during the eating disorder period. METHODS: Seven women were interviewed individually with the objective of investigating their eating practices, transition phases and all relevant aspects that somewhat contributed to the habit-forming; experiences, feelings and perceptions related to mealtime and the influence that food has had over the present subjects' life. The interviews were analyzed by the discourse of the collective subject method. RESULTS: The results brought up the following topics: a) control; b) concerns and feelings; c) deprivation d) beauty dictatorship; e) eating competence; f) importance of food; g) food cacophony. CONCLUSIONS: What stands out is a multiplicity of eating practices, which during the eating disorder were similar to and characterized by restriction; however, after recovery, part of the subjects seem to have developed a higher eating competence, whereas others show a practice similar to the one acquired during the anorexia nervosa, such as the difficulty in realizing when they are satisfied and a feeling of discomfort when facing social interactions.OBJETIVO: Este artigo teve como objetivo analisar qualitativamente como mulheres que se recuperaram da anorexia nervosa percebem e relatam suas práticas alimentares atuais, bem como as práticas vigentes no período do transtorno. MÉTODOS: Foram feitas sete entrevistas individuais com mulheres que vivenciaram a anorexia nervosa. Estas abordaram: hábitos alimentares das entrevistadas; mudanças e fatores importantes para a formação destes; vivências, sentimentos e percepções associados ao momento da refeição; e a influência que a alimentação exerce na vida das participantes hoje. A análise dessas deu-se a partir da técnica do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo. RESULTADOS: Os resultados trouxeram os seguintes temas: a) controle; b) preocupações e sensações; c) privação d) ditadura da beleza; e) competência alimentar; f) importância da alimentação; g) cacofonia alimentar.     Cross-cultural adaptation of the State and Trait Food Cravings Questionnaires ( FCQ-S and FCQ-T) into Portuguese

    This study aimed to present the cross-cultural adaptation of the State and Trait Food Cravings Questionnaires (FCQ-S and FCQ-T) into Portuguese. Tools were translated and back-translated, field experts evaluated the conceptual, operational and item-based equivalence and a sample of students assessed tools, evaluating the level of understanding and analyzing internal consistency through Cronbach's coefficient. In addition, the semantic equivalence was assessed though the intraclass correlation coefficient between the bilingual scores in each question of both versions (English and Portuguese). Tools were considered easy to understand (experts scored 95.4% and 97% for the FCQ-T and FCQ-S, respectively, and 81.8% of students considered them easy to understand), and showed satisfactory internal consistency values (FCQ-T ranged from 0.6 to 0.8 and FCQ-S ranged from 0.5 to 0.8).     A Youth-Leader Program in Baltimore City Recreation Centers: Lessons Learned and Applications

    Peer-led interventions may be an effective means of addressing the childhood obesity epidemichowever, few studies have looked at the long-term sustainability of such programs. As part of a multilevel obesity prevention intervention, B'More Healthy Communities for Kids, 16 Baltimore college students were trained as youth-leaders (YLs) to deliver a skill-based nutrition curriculum to low-income African American children (10-14 years old). In April 2015, formative research was used to inform sustainability of the YL program in recreation centers. In-depth interviews were conducted with recreation center directors (n = 4) and the YLs (n = 16). Two focus groups were conducted with YLs (n = 7) and community youth-advocates (n = 10). Barriers to this program included difficulties with transportation, time constraints, and recruiting youth. Lessons learned indicated that improving trainings and incentives to youth were identified as essential strategies to foster continuity of the youth-led program and capacity building. High school students living close to the centers were identified as potential candidates to lead the program.     A Plan For Developing a Guide to Climate & Health Justice Education: Process and Content

    Climate justice and health education can address the disproportionate health impacts of climate change on minoritized communities by providing frameworks to build awareness and instigate action on climate-related health inequities. The Envisioning Environmental Equity Educator's Guide to Climate and Health Justice provides a framework for educators, activists and health professionals to lead lessons on health and climate justice that center the experiences of those Most Affected People and Areas (MAPA) by climate change. Collaborators in Brazil, the Philippines, and Uganda engaged in stakeholder meetings to assess priorities and needs about climate and health with policymakers, doctors, activists, and students. These meetings informed the product: An educator's guide to climate and health justice that explores their dynamics from an anti-racist, anti-colonial approach. The guide serves as a recommended lesson framework fit with concepts, examples, and activities for educators teaching in primary and secondary learning settings. It is an innovative climate and health justice educational resource that draws on principles of anti-colonialism, critical thinking and consciousness, and engaged pedagogy. It offers a strategy for climate justice communication that targets diverse audiences across climate, health and social contexts by promoting educational approaches that center MAPA experiences, fit for diverse audiences

    Racism, xenophobia, and discrimination: mapping pathways to health outcomes

    Despite being globally pervasive, racism, xenophobia, and discrimination are not universally recognised determinants of health. We challenge widespread beliefs related to the inevitability of increased mortality and morbidity associated with particular ethnicities and minoritised groups. In refuting that racial categories have a genetic basis and acknowledging that socioeconomic factors offer incomplete explanations in understanding these health disparities, we examine the pathways by which discrimination based on caste, ethnicity, Indigeneity, migratory status, race, religion, and skin colour affect health. Discrimination based on these categories, although having many unique historical and cultural contexts, operates in the same way, with overlapping pathways and health effects. We synthesise how such discrimination affects health systems, spatial determination, and communities, and how these processes manifest at the individual level, across the life course, and intergenerationally. We explore how individuals respond to and internalise these complex mechanisms psychologically, behaviourally, and physiologically. The evidence shows that racism, xenophobia, and discrimination affect a range of health outcomes across all ages around the world, and remain embedded within the universal challenges we face, from COVID-19 to the climate emergency

    Body dissatisfaction, dieting and risk behaviors for eating disorders among mothers living in Santos

    OBJETIVO: Avaliar a insatisfação corporal, a prática de dietas e os comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares em uma amostra de mães residentes no município de Santos. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo transversal, de base populacional, com 453 mães de filhos com até 10 anos de idade. As mães responderam ao Teste de Atitudes Alimentares (EAT-26), à Escala de Figuras de Stunkard e a uma questão sobre a prática atual de dietas. RESULTADOS: Das mães, 29,9% apresentaram escore positivo para os comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares e 21,8% estavam fazendo dieta para emagrecer no momento da entrevista. No tocante à imagem corporal, 17,5% das mães estavam satisfeitas com o seu tamanho corporal, 71,5% gostariam de diminuir seu tamanho corporal e 11,0% gostariam de aumentá-lo. Os comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares foram mais frequentes nas mães insatisfeitas com seus tamanhos corporais (p < 0,0001). CONCLUSÃO: A maioria das mães investigadas estava insatisfeita com os seus tamanhos corporais. A frequência de mães que praticavam dietas ou tinham comportamentos de risco para transtornos alimentares foi similar ou superior aos demais estudos nacionais, conduzidos, em sua maioria, com populações consideradas de risco, como meninas adolescentes e jovens universitárias
