We generalize a theorem of Littlewood concerning the factorization of Schur polynomials when their variables are twisted by roots of unity. We show that a certain family of flagged skew Schur polynomials admit a similar factorization. These include an interesting family of Demazure characters as a special case

Diabetes and thyroid diseases - a review

    Get PDF
The fact that insulin and thyroid hormones influence each other actions assumes significance since diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease are the two common endocrine disorders in adult population. Poorly controlled diabetes results in a low T3 state and a loss of TSH response to TRH. Regardless of glycemic control there is an absence of nocturnal THS peak. There is an increased incidence of dysthyroid optic neuropathy in patients with Graves disease and coexistent diabetes. Also, the visual prognosis after treatment is poor. 50% of thyrotoxic patients who were previously euglycemic exhibit variable glucose intolerance while frank diabetes occurs in 2-3% cases. In diabetic patients presence of thyrotoxicosis deteriorates the glycemic control. Diabetic patients with hypothyroidism may suffer from recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia. Type 1 diabetes mellitus patients have a high prevalence of thyroid dysfunction with nearly one third of all newly detected patients showing thyroid autoimmunity. Also, Type 1 diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism co-exist in downs syndrome as well as congenital rubella. In autoimmune polyglandular syndrome Type 2, autoimmune thyroid disease and immune mediated diabetes are among the components

This study's main goal is to investigate the potential applications of OPS aggregate in the manufacturing of concrete. This helps to preserve natural resources in addition to addressing the problem of how to get rid of OPS trash. For this study, twelve under-reinforced concrete beams were made and tested. The reinforcing ratios of these beams varied, from 0.52% to 3.90%.  The paper presents data related to several important aspects of the beams' behavior, including Information about how the beams deflected under load, Details about when and how cracks formed in the beams, Measures of how much the beams could deform before failure, Information on how the beams rotated at their ends during testing. The flexural behaviour of reinforced OPS concrete beams and other regular reinforced concrete beams was compared in the study. The experimental results and the current industry Codes of practice were found to be reasonably well aligned. Notably, beams with low reinforcement ratios satisfied every serviceability standard listed in BS 8110, proving that they were appropriate for real-world uses

Subcarrier Filtering For Spectrally Efficient Multicarrier Modulation Schemes and Its Impact on PAPR: A Unified Approach

    Get PDF
Multicarrier modulation (MCM) based schemes have been a major contributing factor in revolutionizing cellular networks due to their ability to overcome fading. One of the popular scheme orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), having been part of 4G, is also adapted as part of 5G enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB).  Though it has several advantages, spectral efficiency (SE) and peak to average power ratio (PAPR) have been two major concerns which have attracted lot of attention resulting in proposals of several other MCM schemes.  But most of these studies have treated the two issues independently. This paper in particular studies the subcarrier filtering approach to improve the spectral efficiency of MCM scheme and its impact on the overall PAPR of such schemes. The analysis shows that the PAPR improvement is also achieved by such filters meant for spectral confinement and the simulation results validate the same provoking a unified research direction less explored till now

947-951Vehicle transport on roads is a dominant source of air pollution, and hence spatial assessment of its risks is necessary for the decision makers to evaluate its impact on the public. Indian road transport, especially buses, contribute significantly to air pollution, that too in highly accessible areas like bus stands and bus stops. This paper proposes a three-step integrated method to map relative pollution levels of bus stops and bus routes of Coimbatore Corporation using spatial analysis tools of ArcGIS and suggestion of routes for eco-friendly buses and vehicles

INTRODUCTION: For a clear image to be formed on the retina, the transparency of cornea and lens is essential. Cornea contributes to two-thirds of refractive power and lens to one- third of refractive power. In the visible range of spectrum (380 to 760 nm), the cornea transmits almost 100% of light energy. AIM OF THE STUDY: 1) To evaluate the incidence of lenticular and corneal pigmentation with dose and duration of chlorpromazine therapy. 2 To evaluate the significance of lenticular and corneal pigmentation in causing visual defects . MATERIALS AND METHODS: This clinical study was done to evaluate the incidence of corneal and lenticular pigmentation in patients with long term chlorpromazine therapy and its significance in causing visual defects. The study design was a cross-sectional study conducted in Institute of Mental Health , Ayanavaram, Chennai. The patients included in this study were in-patients residing in the Institute of Mental Health . A total of 100 patients, 50 males and 50 female patients were studied. DISCUSSION: The ocular changes associated with chlorpromazine therapy are dose related. The most prevalent ocular side effects associated with chlorpromazine therapy are anterior capsular and subcapsular pigmentation followed by corneal endothelial pigmentary changes. Both conditions do not affect visual acuity significantly. (Ref- Clinical Ocular pharmacology-fourth edition-Jimmy D.Barlett Siret D.jaanus) This study has been directed towards detecting the incidence of corneal and lenticular pigmentation or opacities in 100 mentally ill patients on T. Chlorpromazine for more than 6 months period. SUMMARY: This clinical study was done at Institute of mental health, Ayanavaram. A total of 100 mentally ill patients were evaluated, 50 male and 50 female patients. Relevant data collected from each patients and they were subjected to a detailed ophthalmic evaluation. CONCLUSION: Lenticular and corneal pigmentary changes are the most significant ocular side effects of long term therapy with Chlorpromazine in mentally ill patients. Detailed ophthalmological evaluation by an ophthalmologist should be made mandatory before starting a patient on Chlorpromazine. Patients on long term Chlorpromazine should be subjected for detailed ophthalmic evaluation periodically (Every 2 years in first 10 years and annually thereafter. If the dosage is more than 200mg/day, evaluation should be done in annual basis). The present scenario in rehabilitating the mentally ill patients, other specialist like Ophthalmologist should also play a major role with Psychiatrist to make the patients in leading a dignified independent life

    Get PDF
Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common cancer of the oral cavity and the prognosis of the tumor depends on the early detection of the carcinoma. Toluidine blue is a metachromatic die of the thiazine group that has been effectively used as a nuclear stain because of its binding capacity with DNA. The objective of the study was to find the specificity and sensitivity of the toluidine blue supra vital staining technique in oral leukoplakia. The study comprised of 17 clinically suspicious cases of oral leukoplakia. The effect of toluidine blue staining and histopathological features were also studied. The toluidine blue staining is a sensitive vital staining method for leukoplakia. It is the useful chair side diagnostic test with the sensitivity of 92% and specificity of 100%.   KEYWORDS:  Oral Leukoplakia, toluidine blu

Cytomorphometric Analysis of Normal Exfoliative Cells from Buccal Mucosa in Different Age Groups

Oral exfoliative cytology is a simple and relatively pain free procedure which can be carried out repeatedly with minimum discomfort to the patients. Oral exfoliative cytology has sentivity of 89% and specificity of 89.5%, its accuracy could be enhanced by cytomorphometric analysis of the cells. On reviewing the literature we found numerous articles on cytomorphometric analysis of premalignant and malignant lesions and tobacco chewers-related lesions, but the articles available for the analysis of the normal epithelial cells are relatively few in number. The present study was carried out to assess the cytoplasmic diameter and nuclear diameters of normal buccal mucous membrane under various age groups.Materials and methods:The patients were divided into 3 groups, group-I consists of patients less than 25 years of age, Group – II consists of patients of 25 -50 years of age and Group –III of patients more than 50 years of age. Scrapings were made from the buccal mucosa and immediately fixed with 95% ethanol for a minimum of 15 minutes. In all the cases the Nuclear diameter (ND) and the Cell diameter (CD) were measured in both the horizontal and vertical axes in micrometer. The Nuclear Cytoplasmic(NC) Ratio was also calculated for each case.Statistical analysis:For each age group the mean ND, mean CD, and mean NC ratio were determined. One sample‘t’ test was carried out to find the significance of each sample. Results:The cytomorphometric analysis of the exfoliated normal buccal mucosal cells revealed that the ND varied from 7.4μ to 8.4μ, the cytoplasmic diameter from 46.77μ to 49.34μ and the nuclear cytoplasmic ratio from 0.17μ to 0.20μ. The increase in ND and decrease in CD are due to aging process and decreased cell metabolic activity respectively
