    Central Retinal Vein Occlusion with Therapeutic Level of Anticoagulation

    Purpose. To describe a patient with two episodes of deep venous thrombosis and factor V Leiden mutation who presented with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) despite prophylactic use of warfarin sodium (Coumadin). Methods. A case report of a 44-year-old woman with a history of recurrent deep venous thrombosis and Factor V Leiden mutation was placed on lifelong prophylactic therapy with warfarin. The patient presented with CRVO in the left eye despite therapeutic levels of warfarin. Results. Extensive systemic evaluation disclosed high titers for antinuclear antibody (ANA). Conclusion. Systemic anticoagulation with warfarin may not preclude further thrombotic episodes. In younger patients presenting with retinal vein occlusion and pre-existing multiple thrombophilic risk factors, a multidisciplinary approach is recommended to explore other therapeutic options to avoid further thromboembolic complications

    This paper aims to evaluate the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Company’s Financial Performance (CFP) operating or based in Pakistan. Emerging CSR practices in the developed world have raised question about the inclination of the developing world towards CSR. Pakistan being a developing country, its corporate sector is more concerned about profit maximization than CSR. Various studies around the globe have established that CSR has a positive impact on the financial performance of a company. In this study, secondary data has been used from audited annual reports of 26 companies listed in KSE of similar size from different sectors, which are striving towards better CSR. The data ranges from 2008 to 2012 (5 years). The researchers have used Stakeholder theory to measure CSR; stakeholders include Government, Employees, Suppliers, Creditors, Shareholders and Customers. Return on Asset (ROA) was used as a surrogate for Company’s financial performance (CFP). The result of Multiple Regression Model showed a significant impact of CSR on CFP for only a few stakeholders. After adjusting the model according to Pakistan’s scenario, customers, shareholders and creditors were identified as the key stakeholders for CSR to have an impact on CFP. Analyses also bifurcated the results for KSE 100 index companies and Non KSE 100 index companies in order to have an idea as to how firm size disparity affects CSR’s impact on CFP. The outcomes of the research would be helpful for the corporate decision makers, government policy formulators and other related quarters to understand the impact of CSR on CFP with reference to Pakistan

    Towards Mobility Data Science (Vision Paper)

    Mobility data captures the locations of moving objects such as humans, animals, and cars. With the availability of GPS-equipped mobile devices and other inexpensive location-tracking technologies, mobility data is collected ubiquitously. In recent years, the use of mobility data has demonstrated significant impact in various domains including traffic management, urban planning, and health sciences. In this paper, we present the emerging domain of mobility data science. Towards a unified approach to mobility data science, we envision a pipeline having the following components: mobility data collection, cleaning, analysis, management, and privacy. For each of these components, we explain how mobility data science differs from general data science, we survey the current state of the art and describe open challenges for the research community in the coming years.Comment: Updated arXiv metadata to include two authors that were missing from the metadata.     Mobility Data Science (Dagstuhl Seminar 22021)

    This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 22021 "Mobility Data Science". This seminar was held January 9-14, 2022, including 47 participants from industry and academia. The goal of this Dagstuhl Seminar was to create a new research community of mobility data science in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts by bringing together established leaders as well as promising young researchers from all fields related to mobility data science. Specifically, this report summarizes the main results of the seminar by (1) defining Mobility Data Science as a research domain, (2) by sketching its agenda in the coming years, and by (3) building a mobility data science community. (1) Mobility data science is defined as spatiotemporal data that additionally captures the behavior of moving entities (human, vehicle, animal, etc.). To understand, explain, and predict behavior, we note that a strong collaboration with research in behavioral and social sciences is needed. (2) Future research directions for mobility data science described in this report include a) mobility data acquisition and privacy, b) mobility data management and analysis, and c) applications of mobility data science. (3) We identify opportunities towards building a mobility data science community, towards collaborations between academic and industry, and towards a mobility data science curriculum

    Use of Anti-VEGF Agents in Glaucoma Surgery

    A number of antivascular endothelial growth factor agents are currently used to treat ocular conditions. These agents have similar but distinct biologic qualities and have each been used in the management of neovascular glaucoma and in glaucoma surgery. Several different delivery methods are described, and because these medications are routinely given as intraocular injections, there are some benefits over traditional antifibrotic medications when used in glaucoma surgery. These agents effectively induce regression of anterior segment neovascularization and facilitate initial surgical management of neovascular glaucoma but the long-term outcome of this condition remains dependent on definitive management of the underlying process. Use in trabeculectomy or tube shunt procedures for other types of glaucoma has shown promise in affecting bleb morphology but has not yet been found to be as effective as traditional antifibrotic agents. There are reports of persistently raised intraocular pressure after repeated use of the anti-VEGF agents, possibly related to frequency of injection. These medications have wide application in the field of surgical glaucoma but a precise role has yet to be defined

    Clinical Management of Malignant Glaucoma

    Malignant glaucoma remains one of the most challenging complications of ocular surgery. Although it has been reported to occur spontaneously or after any ophthalmic procedure, it is most commonly encountered after glaucoma surgery in eyes with prior chronic angle closure. The clinical diagnosis is made in the setting of a patent peripheral iridotomy and axial flattening of the anterior chamber. Intraocular pressure is usually elevated, but it may be normal in some cases. Although the exact etiology of this condition is not fully understood, several mechanisms have been proposed and it is thought to result from posterior misdirection of aqueous humor into or behind the vitreous. This review discusses pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, imaging modalities, and current treatment strategies for this rare form of secondary glaucoma
