TRIBAL TEACHERS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS: A STUDY OF THEIR JOB SATISFACTION AS RELATED TO CERTAIN SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS

Background: Educational institutions where people are employed for teaching work provide an organizational structure to them. The academic performance of the students in a school depends upon the effective role of teachers, which in turn is dependent upon the job satisfaction of the teachers. It is an admitted fact that both industrial productivity and the well-being of the employees are related to the fact as to how satisfied or dissatisfied employees are on the job.Objective: To examine the differences if any between the teachers of public and private schools on job satisfaction and its allied psychological factors. Materials and Methods:The present study consists of 320 tribal school teachers drawn from high schools located in Ranchi on a stratified random basis. Each teacher were given personal data questionnaire, job satisfaction, anxiety, job involvement, organizational commitment and locus of control scale for assessing their sociological and personality correlates of job satisfaction. Results:Type of school produces significant main effects on job satisfaction. The obtained value is 12.47, which is statistically significant at .01 level of confidence. On the basis of the correlations obtained, it may be concluded that job satisfaction, job involvement, organizational commitment and locus of control are negatively correlated with anxiety, and positivity correlated with each other.&nbsp

A Political Discourse Analysis of the Speeches of President Obama and Prime Minister Gillani

This paper examines the discourse of the two political speeches made by the Pakistan Premier Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and the US President Barack Obama after the elimination of Osama Bin Laden on May 3, 2011. The objective of this analysis is to discover and explicate how ideology is established and unveiled by the use of language. For the stated purpose, the framework of this study draws on Halliday’s model of transitivity (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004) through which we aim to investigate the transitivity choices employed by the individual speakers, the participant roles (Hasan, 1985) assigned to the enemy and the pronoun choices (Butt et. al., 2004) made by the two speakers in order to reveal a particular socio-political stance disseminated through the two speeches in two cultures: of the USA and Pakistan. The findings indicate that linguistic choices in transitivity play a fundamental role in conveying of implicit and dominant ideologies

Reporting Conflict: Appraising Journalists’ Voice in Pakistani Newspaper Discourse

This paper aims at evaluating journalist voice in the Pakistani print media discourse. Journalists are supposed to make valuefree reporting, but the analysis of  newspaper texts shows that the journalists appraise and the news reports voice newspapers’ stance  (Bednarek, 2006). Therefore, media discourses always present a particular left or rightwing stance loaded with subjective evaluations (White and Thompson, 2008). While previous studies have focused on reportage phenomena of different news genres and perspective comparisons with a primary focus on language in the context of politics for an ideology, this paper explores evaluative patterns - based on the appraisal framework (Martin and White, 2005) of discourse analysis developed within Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2014) with a focus on appraisal domains of attitude, engagement and graduation - in Pakistani news reporting to find a reporter voice. A Pragmatic Analysis of Married Couples Conversation in a Television Serial ‘Nijat’

Language is the basic feature of any society which reflects its social norms and culture. The language patterns vary from culture to culture and the concept of gender is the key factor in this scenario. There is an immense diversity in the language behavior of men and women. The current study aims at finding out the language patterns of both men and women with particular reference to the Pakistani society. Generally in a Pakistani society, men enjoy more power in all affairs of life whereas, women have a secondary status in different domains of life. A famous Pakistani television serial ‘Nijat’ is taken as a sample to explore the differences in language used by married couples belonging to upper and lower social classes during their conversation. The sample is taken from the media keeping in mind the fact that media is representative of the realities of life prevailing in the society. The findings of the present study show that males from the lower class in the role of husband use more FTAs, initiate and ask more questions, whereas females from the same class in the role of wives use more FSAs and submissive language while talking to each other. Maternal risk factors and short term outcome of prematurity: A descriptive study at a secondary care hospital

Background: Approximately 15 million babies are born premature (before 37 weeks of gestation) and 1 million babies die due to prematurity complications every year. Less is known about risk factors of prematurity in middle and low-income countries. The prevalence of prematurity ranges from 5% - 18%. Objective: To determine the prevalence of premature births and to assess the rate of survival, along with the morbidity, among preterm newborns. Furthermore, to document our experience with different gestational age groups of preterm births; and to analyze the association among these strata and their clinical outcomes. Study Design: A descriptive study. Place and Duration of Study: The Aga Khan Maternal and Childcare Centre Hyderabad, Pakistan, from 1st January 2017 to 31st December 2018. Methodology: All pregnant women registered at the obstetric clinic before 24 weeks of gestation having at least three subsequent visits at the same clinic were included in the study. The women who were lost to follow up before completing three visits were excluded from the study. All un-booked women were also excluded from the study. Demographic profile was recorded including maternal age, parity, no of visits at the clinic, gestational age, mode of delivery, birth weight and pregnancy outcome. Newborns were subsequently followed at nursery or well-baby till discharge. Further subgroups were made for gestational age to assess the frequency of various morbidities in each group. Results: One thousand and ninety-one (1091) women were included in the study period that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Two pregnancies were terminated before 24 weeks due to major congenital malformations. The prevalence of prematurity was recorded as 13.4% (146/1089). Perinatal mortality rate (no of stillbirths plus the number of early neonatal death/1000 live birth) was 17 (15.6/1000 live births) out of them, 12 were still births and 5 were early neonatal death. Out of the total preterm babies born, 59.5% (87/146) were admitted to the nursery. In the study group (2%/3146) were extreme preterm, while 7.5% were severe preterm (11/146). Moderate preterm was 11.6% (17/146) and the majority were late preterm accounting for 78.7% (115/146). Though the incidence of birth asphyxia were noted more in late preterm babies i.e. 10 as the number of these babies are also high in our study but the overall percentage was low (8.7%) as compared with the babies of extreme prematurity (100%) and moderate late prematurity (23.5%) respectively. In pregnancy outcome, 12 were still births in which six (50%) were in the late preterm group. Total of 17 newborns suffered from birth asphyxia in which ten newborns (58.8%) were in late preterm group. Overall, it was noted that the decreasing gestational age was directly correlated to morbidity and mortality. Conclusion: Among the different strata, the late preterm group has been observed to be associated with greater morbidity and mortality. Prior awareness of the morbidities associated with late preterm babies is helpful for the health care providers to anticipate and manage potential complications in preterm infants

Prevalence of HER-2/ neu receptor amplification and its effects over prognosis of the patients with breast cancer

Background: The diagnosis and prognosis of patients with breast cancer is routinely carried out with biopsy of growth by H&E staining but it is not commonly practice with various immunomarkers including HER2/neu. However HER2/neu association in breast tumour patients with prognosis has not been studied much, so this study is aim to evaluate the frequency of HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor) amplification and its effects over prognosis among the patients with breast cancer.Methods: After ethical approval, retrospective observational study was conducted from October 2014 to September 2017. All operated patients with biopsy proven breast cancer, the patients having any stage of disease, with sufficient data present in hospital record and patients who received neo-adjuvant chemo-therapy/radio-therapy were included. Patients unfit for surgery due to co-morbidities like cardio renal diseases and patients having insufficient hospital record or who missed follow-ups were excluded. SPSS version 20.0 was used for data analysis for data analysis with qualitative data presented as frequency and percentages.Results: A Total 120 patients, 48(40%) had HER-2/ neu positive. Among the HER2 +ve patients, 17(35.4%) had local recurrence within 03 years while 21(43.7%) cases had distant recurrence. War against Terror Impacts on Pakistan’s Economy: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Pakistani Newspapers

The present research is an attempt to explore the discourses of political cartoons published in Pakistani Urdu and English newspapers representing the war against terror impacts on Pakistan’s economy. Newspapers’ linguistic and semiotic representations of war against terror impacts on Pakistan’s economy are ideologically loaded and employed in the construction and deconstruction of the realities of post 9/11 scenario in a desired way. The research uses multimodal critical discourse approach (Machin, 2007) along with Van Leeuwen’s framework for recontextualisation (2008) and Fairclough’s (2003) framework for visual and linguistic analyses of the political cartoons to explore the hidden ideologies. The visual and linguistic analyses of the political cartoons pay careful attention to how discourses are chosen and then represented visually and linguistically to promote particular interests and ideologies that shape public perception of the reality

Academic Degrowth During Pandemic of COVID-19: Measuring the Digital Space to New Normalcy in Universities of South Punjab, Pakistan

During the Pandemic of COVID-19, the whole world has to go under national lockdown/s time and again. Along other challenges, the academic activities suffered a lot. Academic institutions had to adopt technology for academic process (online teaching). The adoption of technology in advance countries to some extent was easier. But for the third world countries like Pakistan, it proved a challenge and academic degrowth was observed. The present survey is designed to measure the “Digital Space to New Academic Normalcy in Universities of South Punjab, Pakistan. The responses were measured from 470 students of BS, Master and M. Phil studying at the public and private sector universities of the South Punjab of Pakistan through Google forms questionnaire. The findings of the study reveal that during the Pandemic of COVID-19 the universities adopted online teaching with limited digital resources. Even after the lapse of more than one year universities could not significantly prepare themselves for incorporating digital resources for academic process and assessment. 67% universities are still continuing their academic process without the learning management system. Universities are conducting academic activities via Whatsapp which is informal medium. In the light of the collected data, we are able to conclude that there is dire need for the up gradation of digital devices in the academic institutions for moving to new academic normalcy in the wake of Pandemic of COVID-19.Key Words: Digital Space, COVID-19 and Academic Normalcy, Academic degrowth.
