Local Stability of Period Two Cycles of Second Order Rational Difference Equation
We consider the second order rational difference equation   n = 0,1,2,…, where the parameters are positive real numbers, and the initial conditions are nonnegative real numbers. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the equation to have a prime period-two solution. We show that the period-two solution of the equation is locally asymptotically stable. In particular, we solve Conjecture 5.201.2 proposed by Camouzis and Ladas in their book (2008) which appeared previously in Conjecture 11.4.3 in Kulenović and Ladas monograph (2002)
Integrating joint feature selection into subspace learning: A formulation of 2DPCA for outliers robust feature selection
© 2019 Elsevier Ltd Since the principal component analysis and its variants are sensitive to outliers that affect their performance and applicability in real world, several variants have been proposed to improve the robustness. However, most of the existing methods are still sensitive to outliers and are unable to select useful features. To overcome the issue of sensitivity of PCA against outliers, in this paper, we introduce two-dimensional outliers-robust principal component analysis (ORPCA) by imposing the joint constraints on the objective function. ORPCA relaxes the orthogonal constraints and penalizes the regression coefficient, thus, it selects important features and ignores the same features that exist in other principal components. It is commonly known that square Frobenius norm is sensitive to outliers. To overcome this issue, we have devised an alternative way to derive objective function. Experimental results on four publicly available benchmark datasets show the effectiveness of joint feature selection and provide better performance as compared to state-of-the-art dimensionality-reduction methods
Functional importance of angiotensin-converting enzyme-dependent in situ angiotensin II generation in the human forearm
To assess the importance for vasoconstriction of in situ angiotensin (Ang)
II generation, as opposed to Ang II delivery via the circulation, we
determined forearm vasoconstriction in response to Ang I (0.1 to 10 ng.
kg(-1). min(-1)) and Ang II (0.1 to 5 ng. kg(-1). min(-1)) in 14
normotensive male volunteers (age 18 to 67 years). Changes in forearm
blood flow (FBF) were registered with venous occlusion plethysmography.
Arterial and venous blood samples were collected under steady-state
conditions to quantify forearm fractional Ang I-to-II conversion. Ang I
and II exerted the same maximal effect (mean+/-SEM 71+/-4% and 75+/-4%
decrease in FBF, respectively), with similar potencies (mean EC(50)
[range] 5.6 [0.30 to 12.0] nmol/L for Ang I and 3.6 [0.37 to 7.1] nmol/L
for Ang II). Forearm fractional Ang I-to-II conversion was 36% (range 18%
to 57%). The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor enalaprilat (80
ng. kg(-1). min(-1)) inhibited the contra
Smoking status in relation to serum folate and dietary vitamin intake
Objective Cigarette smoke itself is an abundant source of free radicals and a major cause of oxidative stress, to which plasma antioxidants function as a vital protective and counterbalancing mechanism. The objective of this study was to investigate into the relationship between smoking status and serum and dietary micronutrient concentrations. Design Cross-sectional study Subjects ' Setting 502 farmers from the Valley of Messara in Crete were randomly selected and examined. Complete three-day and 24-hr recall questionnaires were collected along with anthropometrical, physical activity and clinical data from all participating subjects. Results After adjusting for age, gender and number of fasting days adhered to per year, current smokers were found to have a lower dietary intake of vitamin C (112.1 mg vs. 136.4 mg, p = 0.03), fibre (16.6 g vs. 19.1 g, p = 0.006) and fruits and vegetables (339 g vs. 412 g, p = 0.014), while dietary vitamin B1 intake was found to be higher (1.7 mg vs. 1.4 mg, p = 0.02) in comparison to non/ex smokers. Dietary intake of meat, folate and vitami A, E, B2, B6 and B12 did not differ between the groups. Controlling age, gender, fasting days and dietary micronutrient intake, serum folate levels were found to be lower among smokers (geometric mean 15.3 nmol/L vs. 17.7 nmol/L, p = 0.023), while serum iron and vitamin B12 levels were not affected by smoking status. Conclusion Current smoking status affects dietary nutrient intake as well as plasma folate levels. The above coherence between antioxidant depletion and reduced antioxidant intake may predispose smokers to the premature development of tobacco related mortality and morbidity
The Short-Term Opening of Cyclosporin A-Independent Palmitate/Sr2+-Induced Pore Can Underlie Ion Efflux in the Oscillatory Mode of Functioning of Rat Liver Mitochondria
Mitochondria are capable of synchronized oscillations in many variables, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that rat liver mitochondria, when exposed to a pulse of Sr2+ ions in the presence of valinomycin (a potassium ionophore) and cyclosporin A (a specific inhibitor of the permeability transition pore complex) under hypotonia, showed prolonged oscillations in K+ and Sr2+ fluxes, membrane potential, pH, matrix volume, rates of oxygen consumption and H2O2 formation. The dynamic changes in the rate of H2O2 production were in a reciprocal relationship with the respiration rate and in a direct relationship with the mitochondrial membrane potential and other indicators studied. The pre-incubation of mitochondria with Ca2+(Sr2+)-dependent phospholipase A2 inhibitors considerably suppressed the accumulation of free fatty acids, including palmitic and stearic acids, and all spontaneous Sr2+-induced cyclic changes. These data suggest that the mechanism of ion efflux from mitochondria is related to the opening of short-living pores, which can be caused by the formation of complexes between Sr2+(Ca2+) and endogenous long-chain saturated fatty acids (mainly, palmitic acid) that accumulate due to the activation of phospholipase A2 by the ions. A possible role for transient palmitate/Ca2+(Sr2+)-induced pores in the maintenance of ion homeostasis and the prevention of calcium overload in mitochondria under pathophysiological conditions is discussed
Metabolic Remodeling during Long-Lasting Cultivation of the Endomyces magnusii Yeast on Oxidative and Fermentative Substrates
In this study, we evaluated the metabolic profile of the aerobic microorganism of Endomyces magnusii with a complete respiration chain and well-developed mitochondria system during long-lasting cultivation. The yeast was grown in batches using glycerol and glucose as the sole carbon source for a week. The profile included the cellular biological and chemical parameters, which determined the redox status of the yeast cells. We studied the activities of the antioxidant systems (catalases and superoxide dismutases), glutathione system enzymes (glutathione peroxidase and reductase), aconitase, as well as the main enzymes maintaining NADPH levels in the cells (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and NADP+-isocitrate dehydrogenase) during aging of Endomyces magnusii on two kinds of substrates. We also investigated the dynamics of change in oxidized and reduced glutathione, conjugated dienes, and reactive oxidative species in the cells at different growth stages, including the deep stationary stages. Our results revealed a similar trend in the changes in the activity of all the enzymes tested, which increased 2–4-fold upon aging. The yeast cytosol had a very high reduced glutathione content, 22 times than that of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and remained unchanged during growth, whereas there was a 7.5-fold increase in the reduced glutathione-to-oxidized glutathione ratio. The much higher level of reactive oxidative species was observed in the cells in the late and deep stationary phases, especially in the cells using glycerol. Cell aging of the culture grown on glycerol, which promotes active oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria, facilitated the functioning of powerful antioxidant systems (catalases, superoxide dismutases, and glutathione system enzymes) induced by reactive oxidative species. Moreover, it stimulated NADPH synthesis, regulating the cytosolic reduced glutathione level, which in turn determines the redox potential of the yeast cell during the early aging process
