The Effect Of Acute Normovolemic Hemodilution And Acute Hypervolemic Hemodilution On Coagulation And Allogeneic Transfusion
Objective: In this study, acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) and hypervolemic hemodilution (HHD) were compared with no hemodilution with regards to the effectiveness in blood usage and coagulation parameters. Methods: The study was performed from February to August 2001 at Hacettepe University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey. Thirty patients undergoing hip arthroplasty surgery were prospectively randomized into: ANH group [autologous blood 15 mL kg(-1) was withdrawn and replaced by 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES)] or HHD group (HES was administered without removal of any autologous blood) or the control group (no hemodilution). In all groups, blood was given when hemoglobin concentration was <9 g dl(-1). Results: Three groups were clinically similar regarding blood loss, mean arterial pressures and coagulation parameters. But allogeneic transfusion requirements were significantly less in hemodilution groups (20% in ANH, 40% in HHD) compared to the control group (100% of patients). Conclusion: We conclude that hemodilution (both ANH and HHD) decreases the demand for homologous blood without adversely affecting hemodynamics or coagulation parameters and HHD seems to be a simple and valuable alternative to ANH in orthopedic patient undergoing hip replacement.Wo
Effect of high pressure homogenization (HPH) on microstructure and rheological properties of hazelnut milk
The effect of high pressure homogenization (HPH) on microstructure and rheological properties of hazelnut milks was investigated. Hazelnut milk samples were produced from cold pressed hazelnut cake and homogenized up to 150 MPa pressure. Microstructural and rheological properties of products, except temperature sweep, were greatly affected by HPH treatments. Homogenized samples showed significant reduction in particle size, which turned from bimodal and poly-disperse to monodisperse distributions. HPH decreased the consistency of products from 91.82 to 0.51 Pa.sn and increased flow behavior index from 0.15 to 0.36. All samples showed higher values G? than G?, which indicates that samples could be classified as soft-gel network, and hazelnut milk samples did not obey the Cox-Merz rule without multiplying angular frequency with shift factor. In conclusion, HPH can be used to reduce the consistency of samples and the friction loss, thus minimizing the amount of energy required to flow during processing and distribution. Industrial relevance. Vegetable based beverages are available at any supermarket as an alternative to dairy products with an increasing consumer acceptance. Between these beverages hazelnut milk samples are the most noteworthy products due to important role in human nutrition and health, and moreover due to well accepted and widely consumed product. Due to its composition, hazelnut milks have very high consistency, and therefore, the energy consumption for processing and handling is too high. In this research, the high pressure homogenization (HPH) technology was successfully proposed to be used for improving microstructural properties, and hence reducing its consistency. The energy consumption during processing and distribution can be minimized by reducing the consistency and friction losses of product. © 2017 Elsevier Lt
Effect of ultrasound treatment on the properties of nano-emulsion films obtained from hazelnut meal protein and clove essential oil
Hazelnut meal protein (4% (w/v)) and clove essential oil (CEO) (3% (v/v)) were homogenized with ultrasound (US) at different times (2, 4 and 6 min) and amplitudes (50, 75 and 100%) to obtain nano-emulsion films. Film forming nano-emulsions (FFNs) were analyzed for average particle size (Dz) and zeta potential, and edible film characterization were evaluated depending on US treatment, as well as antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Dz values and zeta potential of FFNs decreased with increasing acoustic energy delivered to nano-emulsion system. Thickness and water solubility of films significantly decreased with increasing US treatment. Films became more transparent depending on US treatment probably due to particle size reduction. Tensile strength (TS) of films significantly increased with US treatment, while elongation at break (EAB) slightly increased. Microstructure of films became more homogeneous after US treatment and caused to lower water vapor permeability. Enrichment with CEO has given the films antibacterial activity against L. monocytogenes, B. subtilis, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli, and antioxidant activity, and US application has improved these activities. US technology can be used to improve mechanical, barrier and antimicrobial properties of hazelnut meal protein based edible films enriched with CEO. © 2017 Elsevier B.V
Homocysteine Levels And Bad Obstetric Outcome Among Female Operating Room Personnel Occupationally Exposed To Nitrous Oxide
It is known that nitrous oxide (N2O) inactivates vitamin B-12 and causes hyperhomocysteinemia. The personnel working at the operating theatres are repeatedly exposed to N2O in the ambient air. This prompted us to investigate the biochemical indices of vitamin B-12 metabolic status among female personnel working under various levels of N2O exposure. In this study, the homocysteine and folic acid levels were assessed and bad obstetric outcome was questioned. Sixty operating theatre female personnel were examined. Vitamin B-12 and folic acid, total homocysteine level, anticardiolipin IgM, IgG, antiphospholipid IgM, IgG levels were measured in serum. A questionnaire inquiring about obstetric history was given. The serum concentration of folic acid was 10 +/- 3.3 nmol liter(-1). The vitamin B-12 level was 332 +/- 134 pmol liter(-1), the serum concentration of homocysteine was 9.1 +/- 2.4 nmol liter-1 and all were within normal ranges. There was no difference regarding homocysteine, folic acid, vitamin B-12 levels and the obstetric history between the subjects who had abortus history and the subjects who had not abortus history. Exposure to N2O in healthcare workers was not associated with alterations of homocysteine, folic acid status and bad obstetric outcome (Tab. 4, Ref. 18). Text in PDF www.elis.sk.Wo
Efficacy Of Intravenous Acetaminophen And Lidocaine On Propofol Injection Pain
Background. Different methods and propofol formulations have been used to decrease propofol injection pain, but it remains an unresolved problem. We aimed to investigate the effect of i.v. acetaminophen pretreatment on the propofol injection pain. Methods. One hundred and fifty ASA I-II patients undergoing general anaesthesia were randomly allocated into three groups. A 20-gauge catheter was inserted into a superficial radial vein of the left hand, and after the occlusion of venous drainage, Groups I, II, and III were pretreated with 40 mg of lidocaine in saline, 50 mg of i.v. acetaminophen, and 5 ml of saline, respectively. The occlusion was released after 2 min and one-fourth of the total propofol dose was injected into the vein over a period of 5 s. During the injection of both pretreatment solution and propofol, patients' pain was assessed and recorded as 0-3, corresponding to no, mild, moderate or severe pain, respectively. chi(2) and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for the statistical analysis. For all analyses, differences were considered to be significant at P < 0.05. Results. Patient characteristics were similar among the groups. Incidence of pain on injection of propofol in control, i.v. acetaminophen, and lidocaine groups was 64%, 22% and 8%, respectively (P < 0.05). Conclusions. Pretreatment with i.v. acetaminophen seems to be effective in attenuating pain during i.v. injection of propofol
Effect of Coenzyme Q10 on Organ Damage in Sepsis
OBJECTIVE: Investigating the effects of coenzyme 010 on organ damage and survival on mice in cecal ligation perforation (CLP) model in sepsis. BACKGROUND: Coenzyme 010 is an antioxidant molecule playing an important role in mitochondria. Mitochondrial dysfunction is an important mechanism in sepsis pathophysiology. METHODS: Nintyfour Swiss Albino male mice were divided into 8 groups. CLP was performed in Group I. Coenzyme 010, 100 mg/kg subcutaneously, was given 5 hours after CLP to Group II and 20 hours after CLP to Group III. Sham operation was performed in Group IV, 100 mg/kg coenzyme Q10 subcutaneously was given 5 hours after sham operation to Group V and 20 hours after sham operation to Group VI. No operation was performed in Group VII; coenzyme 010, 100 mg/kg subcutaneously, was given to Group VIII. Antibiotics and fluid replacement were applied for 3 days. The mice still living were sacrificed at 576th hour. The organ damages were scored under light microscopy. RESULTS: The survival of Group I and Group II was lower than that of the control groups, but the survival in the Group III was similar to control groups. It was established that spleen, kidney, heart damage and total organ damage were decreased when compared to CLP group. CONCLUSIONS: Coenzyme 010 is effective in decreasing histological organ damage in sepsis (Tab. 3. Fig. 1, Ref. 30). Text in PDF www.elis.sk.WoSScopu
